Chapter 35: After Fate

Chapter 35: After Fate Elara sat at the kitchen table, spinning a knife between her fingers. The rain outside wasn’t heavy, but it was enough to blur the city’s edges. She hadn’t spoken in two days, not really — just enough to get by. Even Raphael hadn’t managed to pull more than a few words out of her. “You’re still angry,” he said, placing a cup of coffee in front of her. “I’m not angry,” she replied. “Then what are you?” “I just… haven’t decided how to feel yet.” He was quiet for a moment, then nodded, like he understood — though he didn’t. “You know what’s weird?” she said suddenly. “I thought after killing Echo, I’d feel different. Like I’d get some kind of… answer.” “You didn’t?” “I got a bunch of new questions.” He looked at her. No rush, just a tired kind of care in his eyes. “Like what?” he asked. “Like why I could do it. Why I could reflect fate. Why it didn’t kill me.” “You really want the answer? Or are you just scared to accept it?” She lifted her head, her eyes flickering with the first sign of uncertainty. “You think I should be afraid?” “I think you already are. You just haven’t let yourself admit it.” She laughed, bitter. “You’re always so gentle. It’s really annoying.” “I know,” he said. “But you keep me around anyway.” She didn’t answer — but she didn’t deny it either. --- That night, they lay side by side, a fist’s width apart. “Have you ever thought,” she said quietly, “that if we’d never seen the thread of fate, we might’ve been happier?” “I have,” he said. “But I’m not sure that’s happiness. That’s just ignorance.” “Sometimes, ignorance sounds like the only way out.” “Not for you,” he said. “You’re not the kind of person who closes her eyes.” She didn’t say anything. Just turned over, facing away from him. “Raphael?” “Hmm.” “Thank you… for not trying to save me.” He was quiet for a moment, then said softly, “Thank you for letting me watch you win.” --- The next morning, she woke to an empty bed and a note on the kitchen table: > *Fate isn’t an end. It’s how you walk through it.* She stared at the words for a long time, then folded the paper and slipped it into the inner pocket of her coat. She knew this wasn’t the end. It was just the beginning. ---
