Chapter seven: The Enemy Within

1130 Words
The first rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains, casting a warm glow across Ariana's new apartment. For a moment, she forgot where she was. She reached instinctively toward the other side of the bed. Empty. A painful ache settled in her chest. There had been a time when waking beside Ethan felt as natural as breathing. Every morning, he would pull her close and whisper that she was the best thing that had ever happened to him. She had believed him. Every word. Every promise. Now those memories felt like poison. Ariana sat up slowly and rubbed her temples. "No more," she whispered to herself. "You survived yesterday. You'll survive today." She walked toward the window. From the twentieth floor, the Blackwood Foundation stretched across several city blocks. Scientists hurried into laboratories. Young professionals carried laptops and steaming cups of coffee. Security guards patrolled the entrances with military precision. Everything here represented opportunity. It also represented pressure. She couldn't afford to fail. Not again. --- At exactly eight-thirty, Mia met her in the lobby. "You look nervous." "I am." "You'll be fine." "I hope so." Mia smiled knowingly. "No. You'll earn your place." Those words stayed with Ariana as they stepped into the main research building. The orientation hall was already full. Nearly forty fellows had been selected from across the country. Some wore confident smiles. Others looked just as anxious as Ariana. A tall man walked onto the stage. "Good morning." The room immediately fell silent. "I am Dr. Nathan Cole, Director of Research." He scanned the room before continuing. "The Blackwood Foundation does not recruit ordinary people." "You were chosen because you possess exceptional talent." Ariana felt a flicker of hope. Then Dr. Cole added, "Unfortunately, talent alone is never enough." The lights dimmed. A presentation appeared on the screen. "Over the next two years, your performance will be constantly evaluated." "If you fail..." "You leave." No second chances. No appeals. Several candidates exchanged uneasy glances. Ariana's heartbeat quickened. She had just escaped one nightmare. She couldn't afford another failure. --- After orientation, the fellows were divided into research teams. When Ariana's name appeared on the screen, whispers immediately spread across the room. "She's the woman the Chairwoman personally welcomed." "I heard executives escorted her upstairs." "Who exactly is she?" Ariana ignored the murmurs and walked toward her assigned laboratory. The moment she entered, she sensed the hostility. Five researchers stood inside. One woman looked up from her workstation. She was beautiful. Elegant. And the coldness in her eyes was unmistakable. "So..." She crossed her arms. "You're Ariana Woods." Ariana nodded politely. "Yes." "I'm Celeste Morgan." Her smile never reached her eyes. "I've been leading this team for six months." She looked Ariana up and down before adding, "I hope you're not expecting special treatment." "I've never asked for any." "Good." "Because around here, connections mean nothing." The room fell silent. Ariana understood exactly what Celeste was implying. She believed Ariana had received favoritism. Ariana could have defended herself. Instead, she simply smiled. "I'll let my work speak for itself." Celeste's expression hardened. "We'll see." --- By midday, the team received its first assignment. Develop a more stable preservation formula for rare medicinal compounds. It was a project that had stalled for nearly eight months. Everyone immediately began offering suggestions. Hours passed. Nothing worked. Frustration spread through the laboratory. Ariana quietly studied the data. Something felt wrong. Not with the formula. With the assumptions. She walked toward the whiteboard. "May I try something?" Celeste sighed dramatically. "Go ahead." Using a marker, Ariana rewrote part of the molecular sequence. "You've been trying to increase stability." She looked around the room. "But stability isn't the real problem." Everyone frowned. "The compounds are reacting to light exposure." Silence. "If you change the storage process instead of the formula..." She finished the equation. "...the degradation rate drops by almost sixty percent." Nobody spoke. One researcher hurried to run the simulation. Minutes later... The results appeared. The room erupted. "It worked!" "Incredible!" "How did we miss that?" Even Dr. Cole, who had been observing from outside, stepped into the laboratory. He looked at Ariana. "Excellent observation." Celeste's smile disappeared. She had spent months leading this project. A newcomer had solved it in one afternoon. The applause that followed felt like humiliation. --- On the top floor... Alexander Blackwood watched the laboratory through a secure live feed. Marcus stood beside him. "You were right." Alexander didn't answer. His silver eyes remained fixed on Ariana. She wasn't celebrating. She wasn't boasting. Instead, she was helping another researcher understand the new process. Marcus smiled. "Most people would enjoy proving themselves." "She isn't most people." Alexander folded his arms. "She doesn't need recognition." "She needs purpose." For reasons he couldn't explain, watching her smile stirred something deep inside him. Something his wolf refused to ignore. Mate. The word echoed again. Stronger this time. Alexander closed the monitor. "No." "Not yet." --- Meanwhile... Across town... Ethan sat in his office, staring blankly at the contract Vanessa had placed before him. "Sign it." He didn't move. "Ethan." Still nothing. Vanessa slammed her hand on the desk. "What is wrong with you?" He sighed. "I've been thinking." "I know." "You've been thinking about Ariana." Ethan looked away. "What if..." He hesitated. "What if I made a mistake?" Vanessa's face drained of color. "You can't be serious." "I gave up someone who believed in me." "You chose me." "No." His voice was quiet. "I chose money." The silence between them became unbearable. For the first time... Vanessa realized she might never truly have Ethan's heart. --- That evening, Ariana returned to her apartment exhausted. She smiled for the first time in weeks. Today she hadn't been someone's abandoned fiancée. She hadn't been a victim. She had simply been... A scientist. As she unlocked her apartment door, she noticed something lying on the floor. A black envelope. Just like before. This time, there was no wax seal. Only a handwritten message. **Congratulations on your first victory.** Her smile faded. She slowly opened the envelope. Inside was a photograph. It showed Ethan. Standing beside Vanessa. Taken only hours earlier. On the back, someone had written five chilling words. **The game has only begun.** Ariana's fingers tightened around the photograph. Someone was watching her. Watching Ethan. Watching all of them. But who? And why? Outside her apartment building, a black luxury SUV sat parked beneath the shadows. A man inside lowered his binoculars. "She's progressing exactly as predicted." A voice crackled through his earpiece. "Should we proceed to Phase Two?" The man smiled. "Yes." "But don't let the Lycan King discover us." The call ended. And somewhere deep beneath the Blackwood Foundation... The ancient vault door moved another inch. End of Chapter Seven
