Chapter Eleven: The Invisible Guardian

Ariana sat motionless on the edge of her bed. The apartment felt colder than before. Quieter. Almost as though someone had stolen more than a letter. Her grandmother's words had been the last connection she had to the woman who raised her. Now they were gone. The silver key rested in her trembling hands. "Why would anyone want the letter?" she whispered. The key offered no answers. Only silence. After searching the apartment for nearly an hour, Ariana finally accepted the truth. Someone had broken into her home. Someone had taken the letter. And whoever they were... They knew exactly what they were looking for. A knock on the door made her jump. Her heart pounded violently. Slowly, she approached the entrance. "Who is it?" "It's Mia." Relief washed over her. Ariana quickly opened the door. Mia frowned immediately. "You look terrible." "Thanks." "I'm serious." Mia stepped inside. "What happened?" Ariana hesitated before explaining everything. The open drawer. The missing letter. The feeling that someone had been watching her. As she spoke, Mia's expression grew increasingly concerned. "Did you call security?" "No." "What?" Ariana sighed. "I wasn't sure anyone would believe me." "Believe you?" Mia stared at her. "Someone broke into your apartment." She immediately pulled out her phone. "We're calling security right now." --- Less than thirty minutes later, Foundation security officers arrived. They carefully inspected the apartment. Every window. Every lock. Every room. When they finished, the lead officer approached Ariana. "There are no signs of forced entry." "What does that mean?" "It means whoever entered either had a key..." He paused. "Or knew how to bypass the security system." Ariana's stomach tightened. "So they were professionals." The officer nodded. "It appears so." --- Several miles away, Alexander Blackwood stood inside his private office. Marcus entered carrying a tablet. "Our team finished reviewing the footage." Alexander looked up immediately. "And?" "The intruder never appeared on camera." Alexander frowned. "Impossible." "We thought so too." Marcus placed the tablet on the desk. "But every camera covering her floor went offline for exactly six minutes." Alexander's expression darkened. "Someone planned this." "Very carefully." Marcus hesitated. "There is something else." Alexander's silver eyes narrowed. "What?" "The stolen letter." "What about it?" "We found evidence suggesting the intruder copied its contents before taking it." Silence filled the office. Alexander slowly stood. "They know." Marcus nodded. "They know she possesses the key." Alexander walked toward the floor-to-ceiling window. Below, the lights of the Foundation glittered against the darkness. For years he had hoped this day would never come. Yet deep inside, he had always known it was inevitable. The people searching for Ariana would never stop. Not until they found what they wanted. Or until she was dead. A dangerous growl escaped his throat. "Not while I'm alive." --- The next morning, Ariana forced herself to go to work. She refused to let fear control her life. The Foundation was already buzzing with activity when she arrived. Researchers moved between laboratories carrying stacks of reports. Assistants hurried through hallways. Phones rang constantly. Everything appeared normal. Yet Ariana couldn't shake the feeling that eyes were following her. Watching. Waiting. As she entered Laboratory Three, conversations immediately paused. Then resumed. Too quickly. She noticed several researchers whispering. One of them looked away the moment she glanced in his direction. A strange unease settled inside her chest. Mia leaned closer. "Do you feel that?" Ariana nodded. "Something is off." "Very off." Before either woman could continue, Dr. Cole entered. The room instantly fell silent. "Good morning, everyone." He placed a folder on the central table. "We've received approval for Phase Two of the preservation project." Excited murmurs spread throughout the laboratory. Dr. Cole smiled. "Because of her outstanding contributions, Miss Woods will serve as Assistant Coordinator." Ariana froze. The room erupted into applause. Everyone except one person. Celeste. Ariana noticed the flash of anger in her eyes. It disappeared almost instantly. But it was there. And it worried her. --- Across the room, Celeste clenched her jaw. Assistant Coordinator. After only a few weeks. The title should have been hers. She had spent years working tirelessly. Years proving herself. Years sacrificing her personal life. Then Ariana arrived. And suddenly everyone acted as though she was extraordinary. Celeste forced a smile. But inside, resentment continued to grow. --- Meanwhile, Ethan Blackwell stood outside the Blackwood Foundation. His hands tightened around the steering wheel. The building looked even larger than he imagined. For several minutes, he simply stared. Then he stepped out of the car. Today, he would finally see Ariana. Whether she forgave him or not... He needed to apologize. He needed her to know the truth. As he entered the lobby, employees rushed past him. No one paid him any attention. Until he saw her. Ariana. Standing near the reception desk. Laughing at something Mia had said. For a moment, Ethan forgot how to breathe. She looked different. Stronger. More confident. Beautiful. Not because of expensive clothes or makeup. Because she looked alive again. The realization hurt more than he expected. She had learned how to live without him. Ethan slowly walked forward. "Ariana." The smile disappeared from her face. Her entire body stiffened. Slowly, she turned. Their eyes met. Silence. For weeks, Ethan had imagined this moment. But nothing prepared him for the coldness in her gaze. Not hatred. Not anger. Indifference. And somehow... That hurt the most. "What do you want?" she asked quietly. Ethan swallowed. "I wanted to talk." "I don't." "Ariana—" "No." Her voice remained calm. "You lost the right to use my name the day you stole from me." The words struck like a knife. Several employees nearby turned to watch. Ethan ignored them. "Please." "I made mistakes." "Mistakes?" Ariana laughed bitterly. "You didn't make a mistake." "You made a choice." Silence fell between them. "You chose Vanessa." "You chose money." "And you chose to destroy me." For the first time, Ethan had no defense. Because she was right. Every word. She was right. Ariana stepped around him. "Don't come looking for me again." Then she walked away. Without looking back. Without hesitation. Without regret. Ethan remained frozen in the lobby. Watching her disappear. Realizing he had finally lost her. Maybe forever. --- From the executive floor above, Alexander observed everything. His expression remained unreadable. Marcus stood beside him. "That was Ethan." "I know." Alexander's silver eyes followed Ariana as she disappeared into the elevator. His wolf stirred. Protective. Possessive. Dangerously aware. Marcus smirked. "You looked ready to throw him out of the building." Alexander said nothing. But Marcus wasn't wrong. Because for the first time in years... Alexander Blackwood found himself wanting something. And that something was Ariana Woods. Far beneath the Foundation, hidden behind ancient stone and steel, the massive vault trembled. A crack spread across its surface. Silver light leaked through the darkness. And from somewhere deep within came a whisper. "She is closer." End of Chapter Eleven
