Chapter Twelve: A Promise in the Shadows

1826 Words
The silence inside the executive office was suffocating. Alexander stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Blackwood Foundation. The city lights shimmered beneath the evening sky, but his thoughts were far from the breathtaking view. His mind replayed the scene from the lobby. Ethan Blackwell. The man who had broken Ariana's heart. The man who had stolen her savings, shattered her trust, and still had the audacity to stand before her asking for forgiveness. Alexander's hands tightened into fists. Marcus leaned against the doorway, watching his king carefully. "I've never seen you this angry." Alexander didn't respond immediately. His silver eyes remained fixed on the city below. "I wasn't angry." Marcus chuckled. "If that's not anger, I'd hate to see what is." Alexander finally turned. "He hurt someone who never deserved it." Marcus folded his arms. "And now?" Alexander's voice became cold. "Now he stays away from her." Marcus raised an eyebrow. "That's an order?" "No." Alexander paused. "It's a warning." Marcus smiled to himself. The mighty Lycan King had finally admitted what everyone else could already see. His wolf had chosen. --- Meanwhile, Ariana sat alone in Laboratory Three. Most of the researchers had already gone home, but she remained behind, reviewing the latest data from the preservation project. Numbers. Chemical structures. Reaction rates. Science had always been her refuge. Unlike people, formulas never lied. She rubbed her tired eyes and glanced at the clock. 8:47 p.m. "I should head home." Just as she packed her laptop, the laboratory lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then everything went dark. The hum of the machines stopped. Silence filled the room. Ariana reached for her phone and switched on the flashlight. "Hello?" No answer. Only the sound of her own breathing. The emergency lights suddenly activated, bathing the laboratory in a dim red glow. Something wasn't right. She stepped into the hallway. It was empty. Far too empty. Even the security desk at the end of the corridor was unmanned. A strange feeling settled in her stomach. Almost as if... Someone wanted her to be alone. --- Several floors below, Marcus frowned as he watched the security monitors. "Alexander." The Lycan King appeared beside him instantly. "What happened?" "The cameras on the third floor just went offline." Alexander's expression hardened. "Which laboratory?" Marcus typed rapidly. "Laboratory Three." Alexander didn't wait another second. He was already moving. --- Unaware of the growing danger, Ariana continued toward the elevator. She pressed the button. Nothing happened. The power was still out. "Great..." She sighed. "I'll take the stairs." As she reached the emergency staircase, she noticed something lying on the floor. Another black envelope. Her heart skipped. Slowly, she picked it up. There was no address. No name. Only the familiar crescent moon symbol stamped in silver wax. Her fingers trembled as she broke the seal. Inside was a single sheet of paper. The handwriting was elegant. **You cannot escape your destiny.** Below the sentence was another message. **The key belongs to us.** Ariana's breath caught. How did they know about the key? She had told no one. Not even Mia. Suddenly— A loud metallic clang echoed from somewhere below. Then another. Footsteps. Heavy. Slow. Deliberate. Someone was climbing the stairs. Ariana instinctively stepped backward. The emergency lights flickered again. The footsteps grew louder. Closer. Closer still. --- On the fifth floor, Alexander burst through the stairwell doors. His heightened senses immediately detected something unusual. A faint scent. Fear. Ariana. Without hesitation, he followed it. His wolf surged inside him. Protect her. Protect your mate. Alexander's pace quickened. --- Ariana's heartbeat thundered in her ears. The footsteps stopped. Silence. Then... A voice echoed through the stairwell. "So..." "You really are alive." Ariana's blood ran cold. She couldn't recognize the voice. It was distorted. Almost mechanical. She tightened her grip on the envelope. "Who's there?" No answer. Only silence. Then a figure emerged from the shadows. Dressed entirely in black. Face hidden beneath a hood. The silver crescent moon symbol glinted on the person's glove. The intruder tilted his head. "Our master has waited a very long time for you." Ariana took another step backward. "What do you want?" The figure smiled beneath the mask. "The key." "I don't know what you're talking about." "Liar." The word echoed through the stairwell. The stranger took another step. "So your grandmother never told you." Ariana's eyes widened. "You knew my grandmother?" The intruder laughed softly. "Oh..." "We knew her very well." --- At that exact moment, Alexander reached the fourth floor. He heard the conversation. His eyes flashed silver. His wolf roared with fury. The scent of danger was overwhelming. Marcus's voice crackled through his earpiece. "Alexander, security teams are two minutes away." "They're too late." Without another word, Alexander sprinted up the stairs, each step carrying him closer to Ariana. Above him, the hooded figure slowly reached inside his coat. Ariana's pulse quickened. Whatever was hidden there... She knew instinctively it wasn't anything good. The stranger smiled. "Our master said that if you refused to come willingly..." He withdrew a gleaming silver dagger. "...we should bring your body instead." The silver dagger gleamed beneath the emergency lights. Its blade was unlike any ordinary weapon Ariana had ever seen. Strange symbols were engraved along its length, and the metal seemed to shimmer with an eerie blue glow. The hooded figure spun the dagger effortlessly between his fingers. "Our master gave very clear instructions," he said, his voice muffled beneath the mask. "Bring back the key... or bring back your body." Ariana's pulse thundered in her ears. Every instinct told her to run. Without another thought, she turned and sprinted up the stairs. The intruder laughed. "You can run..." His footsteps echoed behind her. "...but destiny always catches up." Ariana didn't look back. She pushed herself harder, her lungs burning as she climbed flight after flight. The emergency lights flickered wildly, casting long shadows across the concrete walls. Suddenly, the stairwell door above burst open. Alexander. His sharp silver eyes immediately found Ariana. For a split second, relief flooded her face. "Get behind me," he ordered calmly. She didn't hesitate. The authority in his voice left no room for doubt. Ariana rushed behind him as the hooded man slowed to a stop several steps below. "So..." the stranger said with a low chuckle. "The Lycan King finally shows himself." Ariana stared at Alexander in confusion. **Lycan King?** Alexander's expression remained cold. "You shouldn't have come here." The intruder shrugged. "We had no choice." "Our master has waited twenty-five years for this moment." "You'll never have her." The stranger laughed again. "You said the same thing to her grandmother." Alexander's jaw tightened. A flash of pain crossed his face before disappearing almost instantly. "You should have stayed buried with the rest of the Eclipse Order." The stranger's laughter stopped. "We survived." "And now..." He lifted the dagger. "...history will repeat itself." Without warning, he lunged forward. Everything happened in seconds. Alexander stepped between Ariana and the blade. Metal clashed against metal. From inside his jacket, Alexander had drawn a short black blade. The impact sent sparks flying across the stairwell. Ariana stumbled backward in shock. Neither man moved like ordinary humans. Their speed was impossible. One moment they stood several feet apart. The next, they were exchanging strikes faster than Ariana's eyes could follow. The stranger swung again. Alexander blocked. He twisted the attacker's wrist before driving him into the concrete wall with tremendous force. The stairwell shook. Cracks spread across the cement. The intruder grunted before kicking Alexander away. Both men landed gracefully on opposite sides of the staircase. "You've grown weaker, Your Majesty," the stranger mocked. Alexander's silver eyes began to glow. "So have your manners." The air around him changed. It became heavier. More powerful. Ariana felt goosebumps spread across her skin. She had never experienced anything like it. The stranger's confidence faltered. "No..." He whispered. "You wouldn't dare transform here." Alexander took one slow step forward. "I won't need to." His voice was deeper now. More commanding. His pupils narrowed. The stranger suddenly realized he was losing. He reached into his coat and threw a small silver sphere onto the ground. Smoke exploded through the stairwell. Ariana coughed as thick grey mist filled the air. "Alexander!" "I'm here." His voice came from somewhere nearby. A strong hand wrapped around her wrist. "Stay close." She obeyed without thinking. Through the smoke, hurried footsteps echoed downward. The attacker was escaping. Marcus and three security officers rushed through the lower entrance. "Seal every exit!" Marcus shouted. "No one leaves this building!" The guards disappeared into the smoke. Several minutes later, one of them returned. "He escaped." Marcus cursed under his breath. Alexander remained silent. His gaze rested on the silver dagger lying on the staircase. The intruder had abandoned it. Marcus carefully picked it up using a cloth. "The Eclipse insignia." Alexander nodded. "They're becoming reckless." "No." Marcus looked at the weapon thoughtfully. "They're becoming desperate." Alexander turned toward Ariana. "Are you hurt?" She slowly shook her head. "I... I don't think so." Only now did she realize he was still holding her hand. The warmth of his touch sent an unfamiliar flutter through her chest. Alexander noticed it too. He released her hand almost immediately. "I'm sorry." Ariana smiled softly. "You just saved my life." "You don't need to apologize." For the first time since they had met, Alexander allowed himself a genuine smile. It was brief. But it completely transformed his usually serious face. Ariana couldn't stop staring. She had never seen anyone smile quite like that. Marcus cleared his throat. "If you two are finished pretending the world isn't falling apart..." Alexander shot him an annoyed glance. Marcus grinned shamelessly. "The security team found something." He handed Alexander a folded piece of paper recovered from the smoke bomb. Alexander unfolded it. His expression darkened. "What is it?" Ariana asked. He hesitated. Then handed her the note. Her hands trembled as she read it. **The Moon Heir has awakened.** **The Blood Moon rises in ninety days.** **Prepare the throne... or prepare the grave.** Ariana looked up in confusion. "I don't understand." Alexander folded the note again. "You weren't supposed to." Far beneath the Foundation... The ancient vault trembled violently. The silver symbols carved into its massive stone doors blazed with brilliant light. For the first time in centuries... The doors shifted. A deep, ancient voice echoed through the darkness. "The Moon Heir has returned." High above, neither Ariana nor Alexander heard the voice. But both felt the same sudden pulse. The silver key hidden inside Ariana's apartment glowed with blinding light. And somewhere in the darkness beyond the city... A mysterious man watched everything unfold through a wall of surveillance screens. His lips curled into a satisfied smile. "So..." He whispered. "The game has finally begun." He reached for a crystal glass filled with red wine. "Welcome home..." "...Princess." End of Chapter Twelve
