Chapter 3: The Letter

695 Words
Ariana barely slept. The cold floor had become her bed. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Ethan. His smile. His promises. His betrayal. By sunrise, she felt numb. The apartment was nearly empty. Most of her belongings had already been packed into old boxes. Her phone buzzed. Unknown Number. For a moment, she considered ignoring it. Instead, she answered. "Miss Woods?" The voice belonged to the elderly man from the previous night. "Yes." "My name is Harrison." Ariana sat up. "The lawyer?" "Your grandmother's lawyer." Silence followed. "Can you come to my office today?" Ariana looked around the apartment. She had nowhere else to go. "Yes." --- An hour later, Ariana stood outside Harrison & Associates. The building was old but elegant. Inside, Mr. Harrison greeted her warmly. He looked to be in his late sixties, with silver hair and kind eyes. "You look exactly like your grandmother," he said softly. Ariana forced a smile. "She was a wonderful woman." "She certainly was." He gestured for her to sit. Then he placed a small wooden box on the desk. Ariana frowned. "What's this?" "Your grandmother instructed me to give it to you when you had lost everything." The words sent a chill down her spine. Slowly, she opened the box. Inside was a silver key. A sealed envelope. And a bank card. Ariana looked up. "That's it?" Mr. Harrison nodded. "The card contains enough money to help you start over." Her heart sank. Part of her had hoped for a miracle. A massive inheritance. A solution to all her problems. Instead, she received a key, a letter, and a little money. The disappointment must have shown on her face because Harrison smiled gently. "Your grandmother believed that true strength comes from building, not inheriting." Ariana swallowed hard. That sounded exactly like her grandmother. "Read the letter." With trembling fingers, Ariana broke the seal. The familiar handwriting instantly brought tears to her eyes. --- My Dearest Ariana, If you are reading this, then life has been cruel to you. You have been betrayed. You have been hurt. And you believe you have lost everything. But you are wrong. You have only lost what was never meant to stay. Listen carefully. The blood running through your veins is far more important than you realize. There are truths about our family that have been hidden for generations. One day, the silver key will lead you to those answers. But not yet. Not until you have discovered your own strength. Trust no one. Especially those who suddenly show interest in you. And remember this: The people who break you often become the very people who fear you. I love you. Always. Grandma. --- By the time Ariana finished reading, tears streamed down her cheeks. For the first time since her grandmother's death, she felt close to her again. "The key," Ariana whispered. "What does it open?" Mr. Harrison shook his head. "She never told me." Ariana stared at the silver key. More questions. No answers. --- Across town, Ethan Blackwell sat alone in his office. Vanessa had spent the morning planning their engagement party. He hadn't listened to a single word. Instead, he found himself staring at an old photograph. It showed Ariana laughing during a beach trip three years ago. Back then, everything had been simple. Back then, she had believed in him. His phone buzzed. Vanessa. He ignored it. A memory surfaced. Ariana working late nights to help his business survive. Ariana paying bills when he couldn't. Ariana supporting him when everyone else doubted him. For the first time, guilt tightened around his chest. He quickly shoved the photograph into a drawer. This was necessary. It had to be. Yet the words sounded hollow even to him. --- Far away, inside a private jet soaring through the clouds, a man studied a file. The name on the cover read: ARIANA WOODS. The man's silver eyes narrowed. Power radiated from him. Dangerous. Ancient. Royal. A faint smile touched his lips. "So," he murmured. "She's finally awakened." The jet continued toward the city. And with it came a destiny Ariana never saw coming. End of Chapter Three
