Chapter 7: Terms and Conditions (1)

1344 Words
Aria's POV Two hours until the barrier collapsed. Two hours to plan a wedding that would save everyone I'd somehow started caring about. Two hours to bind myself permanently to a man who made my pulse race and my magic sing in ways I didn't understand. No pressure. I stood in what had been designated as my temporary room—a guest bedroom in the pack house that was nicer than any place I'd lived in years—staring at myself in the mirror. Dr. Chen and two other pack women whose names I was still trying to remember had descended on me with the kind of efficient kindness that suggested they'd done this before. "The dress belonged to Kai's mother," said Rebecca, a woman in her fifties with graying brown hair and gentle hands who seemed to serve as the pack's unofficial coordinator of everything. "Elena saved it all these years, hoping... well, hoping for a day like today." The dress was beautiful—a simple design in ivory silk that somehow managed to be both elegant and understated. It fit me perfectly, which should have been impossible given that I'd never met Kai's mother and had no idea what her measurements had been. "It's like it was made for you," whispered Jenna, a young woman barely out of her teens who kept looking at me with the kind of awe usually reserved for celebrities. "Luna Elena says some things are just meant to be." Luna Elena. Kai's grandmother, who'd been conspicuously absent from the wedding preparations despite being the pack's former Luna. I'd asked about her, but the other women had exchanged looks and changed the subject quickly. Another mystery in a day that was already full of them. "Tell me about the bonding ceremony," I said as Rebecca fastened the tiny buttons that ran up the back of the dress. "What should I expect?" The women exchanged another look, this one loaded with significance. "You don't know?" Jenna asked, her eyes wide. "I know the basics. A magical bond, permanent connection, protection from the Shadow Circle. But I've never actually seen one performed." Rebecca's hands stilled on the buttons. "Honey, a true bonding ceremony between an Alpha and his mate is... intense. It's not just a magical contract. It's a joining of souls." "Souls." I tried to keep my voice steady. "Right. Kai mentioned it would be intimate." "Intimate is one word for it," Dr. Chen said dryly from where she was arranging flowers—somehow, someone had managed to find white roses and baby's breath despite the circumstances. "You'll be sharing everything, Aria. Every emotion, every sensation, every memory. When the bond forms, there will be no barriers between you." My stomach dropped. "Every memory?" "Well, not like a movie playing in your head," Rebecca clarified quickly. "More like... echoes. Emotional impressions. The things that shaped you into who you are." "And he'll feel all of that? Everything I've been through?" The women fell silent, and I realized they were picking up on my rising panic. Because there were things in my past—dark things, painful things—that I'd never shared with anyone. The night my parents died. The years of running and hiding. The desperate, soul-deep loneliness that came with being the last of your kind. Did I really want Kai Silvermoon to know all of that? Did I want him to feel the weight of my grief and fear and isolation? Did I have a choice? "He'll understand," Dr. Chen said gently. "Alphas are natural protectors, Aria. When Kai feels your pain, his first instinct will be to heal it, not judge you for it." "Besides," Jenna added with a shy smile, "you'll be feeling his memories too. And trust me, our Alpha has his own shadows to share." That thought hadn't occurred to me. What kind of pain was Kai carrying? What had shaped him into the man who'd risk everything to protect a stranger? A man who wasn't really a stranger, a voice in the back of my mind whispered. A man whose touch sent recognition singing through my bones, whose amber eyes felt like coming home. "There's something else," Rebecca said quietly. "Something we should probably warn you about." Of course there was. "The bonding ceremony requires... physical contact. Not s****l," she added quickly when she saw my expression, "but intimate. You'll need to be skin to skin for the magic to flow properly. Hand to hand at minimum, but usually..." "Usually what?" "Usually the bond is stronger if there's more contact. Heart to heart, literally. It's traditional for the couple to be... minimally clothed." Heat flooded my cheeks. "How minimally?" "Undergarments," Dr. Chen said matter-of-factly. "Enough for modesty, not enough to block the magical connection." I closed my eyes, trying to process this latest complication. So not only was I going to be emotionally naked with Kai Silvermoon, I was going to be literally half-naked as well. While his entire pack watched. "The pack doesn't watch the bonding itself," Rebecca said, somehow reading my expression. "That's private, between you and Kai. But they will witness the ceremony that comes before and after." "How long does the actual bonding take?" Another exchange of looks. "That depends," Dr. Chen said carefully, "on how compatible your magic is, and how much you fight the connection. Some couples bond in minutes. Others... take longer." "Define longer." "Hours, sometimes. The magic won't settle until both parties are completely open to each other. If either person is holding back emotionally, the bond can't complete." Perfect. So if I couldn't let go of my walls and trust this man completely—this man I'd known for exactly one day—we could be trapped in magical limbo while the Shadow Circle's barrier collapsed and killed everyone we were trying to save. "You can do this," Jenna said firmly. "I know it's scary, but Kai is a good man. The best. He'll take care of you." "I don't need taking care of," I said automatically, then immediately felt bad for snapping at her. "I'm sorry. I'm just... this is a lot." "It is," Rebecca agreed. "But honey, can I tell you something?" I nodded. "I've been part of this pack for thirty years. I've seen Kai grow from a wild child into the man he is today. And I have never—not once—seen him look at anyone the way he looks at you." "We just met yesterday." "Did you?" Dr. Chen asked quietly. "Because when you two shook hands in Kai's office, the magical backlash was visible from across the room. That doesn't happen between strangers." Before I could ask what she meant, there was a knock on the door. Rebecca opened it to reveal Marcus, Kai's Beta, looking uncomfortable in a formal suit. "Ladies," he said with a polite nod. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but we need to begin soon. The barrier is showing signs of instability." My stomach clenched. "How much time do we have?" "An hour, maybe less." His dark eyes met mine, and I saw something there—concern, maybe, or warning. "Are you ready for this?" Was I ready to bind myself permanently to a man I barely knew? Ready to share my deepest secrets and darkest fears? Ready to become Luna to a pack I'd just met? No. Absolutely not. But was I ready to let these people die because I was too scared to take a leap of faith? Never. "I'm ready," I said, surprised by how steady my voice sounded. Marcus nodded. "Kai is waiting in the ceremonial circle. The pack is gathered. When you're prepared, we'll begin." He left, closing the door quietly behind him. The women bustled around me, making final adjustments to the dress and my hair, which they'd somehow tamed into an elegant updo decorated with small white flowers. "You look beautiful," Rebecca said, squeezing my hands. "Kai won't be able to take his eyes off you." That was what I was afraid of. .
