"Selena, you don’t understand—" Donovan’s voice was urgent, almost pleading.
I turned to face him, the weight of my own thoughts making the world around me blur for a moment. "No, Donovan. I understand perfectly. Killian is back. And now, it feels like everyone who has ever been in my life wants to tear it apart."
His eyes flickered with concern, his strong jaw tightening. He reached for my hand, but I pulled it away before his fingers could make contact. I didn’t want his pity. What I wanted was peace, something I had been searching for all these years. But peace seemed to slip through my fingers every time.
"I never wanted to drag you back into this mess," he said, his voice quieter now. "But you can’t hide forever, Selena. We need to face him, face them, together. If not for you, then for Ariella."
I swallowed hard, the mention of my daughter tugging at the fragile hold I had on my emotions. Ariella, the little girl who carried the weight of an entire future in her hands, the one who could heal or destroy the world we knew. She was the key to everything. My heart clenched as I thought of her, of the power brewing inside her, of how vulnerable she was.
"Donovan..." I began, but a sudden noise from behind stopped me mid-sentence. My senses flared, and I turned, ready for anything. But what I saw sent a chill down my spine.
Standing at the edge of the camp, his figure tall and imposing, was Rex, Killian’s Beta. The man who had been nothing but loyal to Killian—at least, that’s what I had always thought. But now, as I saw the cold smirk on his face, something shifted deep inside me.
"Rex?" My voice was steady, but my heart raced in my chest. I had not expected this.
He stepped forward, the shadows of the forest still clinging to his form, making him appear even more sinister. Donovan stood next to me, his stance defensive as if he too had sensed the danger in the air.
"Selena," Rex’s voice was smooth, almost too smooth. He gave me a mocking bow, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "It’s been a long time."
I clenched my fists at my sides. "What are you doing here, Rex? You’ve made your allegiance clear. What, now you’re trying to claim you’re part of this pack?"
Donovan growled low under his breath, his stance tightening, but Rex ignored him, his gaze never leaving me. His smirk deepened, and a sense of dread filled the pit of my stomach.
"Actually," Rex said, "I’ve been working behind the scenes for quite some time. And you’d be surprised at just how much you’ve been kept in the dark, Selena."
My mind raced as I tried to piece the puzzle together. What was he talking about? "What do you mean?" I demanded the harshness in my voice a stark contrast to the confusion swirling inside me.
"You think you can run away from your past," Rex continued, his voice tinged with mockery, "but it always catches up to you, doesn’t it? Especially when you’re not looking."
"Don’t listen to him," Donovan growled, stepping closer to me, his body tensing in preparation for a fight.
Rex raised a hand, silencing him with a cold glance. "You’ve got no idea what you’ve stumbled into, Donovan. You think you’ve won, that you’ve gained some sort of control over Selena. But it’s all a lie." His eyes locked onto mine, and I felt a pang in my chest, a sinking feeling that grew deeper with every word. "The Storm Pack will crumble. Your future with it... it won’t last."
I took a step back, my thoughts spiraling out of control. "What are you talking about?" I barely whispered the words, afraid of what I might hear.
"You," he said with a chilling calmness, "have been played. And the one pulling the strings is not who you think it is."
My breath caught in my throat. "No," I shook my head, unable to accept it. "You’re lying."
He chuckled darkly, the sound sending a shiver through my spine. "You’ve always been too trusting, Selena. Killian is not the only one who has been manipulating you. I’ve been working against you for years. All this time, you’ve been trying to build a life here, trying to find a safe place for your daughter. But I’ve been making sure that safety is nothing more than a fantasy."
I could feel the world shifting beneath my feet, the ground I thought I had solidly stood on now crumbling away. "Rex, no..." My voice broke as the betrayal hit me with the force of a physical blow.
"I didn’t want it to be like this," he said, his eyes softening just for a second, as though trying to elicit sympathy. "But you’ve always been so naïve. You should’ve known better."
"Shut up," I snapped, fury burning through me. My hands balled into fists as I took a step toward him, every part of me desperate to fight back against the betrayal.
Donovan stepped in between us, his body rigid, ready to defend me if necessary. "Enough, Rex," he said with quiet authority. "You’ve made your point. But if you think you’re walking out of here without answering for your lies, you’re gravely mistaken."
Rex’s smile returned, but this time, it was colder, more dangerous. "Oh, Donovan," he said, his voice dripping with contempt. "You don’t get it, do you? You’ve always been the pawn in this game. The real game is just beginning."
I looked at Donovan, the confusion in his eyes mirroring my own. "What does he mean?" I asked, the words slipping from my lips before I could stop them.
Rex turned to face me fully, the smirk on his face like a knife to my heart. "You should have known, Selena," he said coldly. "No one is ever truly safe.”
