The door shut with that solid expensive click and the world outside got quieter. Isolde pressed herself into the leather seat. Water dripped from her hair onto her lap. She kept seeing it. Kieran moving on her mom. The way her mom had reached for that blanket like it could cover up months of lying.
Damien drove through the rain. His jaw stayed tight. He did not turn on music or try to make small talk. Just drove like he had somewhere better to be and she was now part of it.
"You know who I am?" he asked after a couple blocks. His voice rolled deep. The kind of voice that made people listen even when they did not want to.
Isolde shook her head. "No. Should I?"
"Damien Blackthorn. Your boyfriend Kieran has been taking money from my bank. A lot of it. Part of something bigger. I have been watching him for weeks." He glanced at her. Eyes sharp. "And tonight you just handed me the perfect opening."
She stared at him. "What?"
"You walked in on them. I saw the whole thing from across the street. I was there to confront him. Instead I got you running straight into my car." Damien changed lanes smooth. "So here is the situation. Kieran owes me millions. Your mother seems involved too from what my people dug up. You can help me get it back."
Isolde laughed. The sound came out shaky and bitter. "Help you? I just watched my boyfriend f**k my own mom on my birthday. I do not even know what day it is anymore. Why would I help you?"
"Because you have something I need." He tapped the wheel once. "That memory of yours. Eidetic. You remember every number he ever mentioned. Every late night call. Every excuse. I checked you out while you were standing there in the rain like a lost kid."
She wiped her face with wet sleeves. "You checked me out? What the hell is wrong with you people?"
"Nothing is wrong with me. I protect what is mine. My bank. My reputation." Damien slowed at a light. "You sign a contract. One year. You live in my place. Work as my shadow. Help me trace the money. In return I destroy them. Kieran loses everything. Your mom too if she is in deep. You walk away clean at the end. Debt free."
Isolde turned toward him. Her heart beat too fast. "A contract? Like what? I am not some employee you can just pick up off the street."
"Not employee. Asset." He looked at her then. Really looked. Eyes moving over her wet sweater and messy hair. "You will be close to me. Very close. I need to know you will not run back to them."
The car pulled into an underground garage beneath one of those massive buildings in Manhattan. Lights flickered across the concrete. Damien parked and killed the engine.
"Come upstairs. We talk properly. You are freezing and I do not negotiate in cars."
She should have said no. Called Lila. Called the cops. Anything. Instead she followed him into the elevator because the alternative was going back to that house with the cake smashed on the floor.
The penthouse hit her like another world. Huge windows looking over the city lights. Furniture that probably cost more than her whole life. Damien tossed his wet coat over a chair and poured two glasses of something dark. He handed her one.
"Drink. It will warm you up."
Isolde took it but did not sip. "I am not staying here. I have my own place."
"Your place is compromised. Kieran knows it. Your mom knows it." He leaned against the counter. Arms crossed. "Read the contract. One year. You help me recover what they stole. I make sure they cannot touch you again. In return you get safety. Money. A future that does not involve cleaning up their messes."
She set the glass down hard. "And what exactly does very close mean? Because the way you are looking at me right now does not feel like business."
Damien stepped closer. Not touching. Just close enough that she felt the heat coming off him. "It means what I need it to mean. You will sleep here. Work here. Obey the rules I set. There is a collar. Biometric. Tracks you. Makes sure you do not lie or run. It gives feedback when you break terms."
"A collar?" Isolde backed up until her legs hit the couch. "Like a dog? You are insane."
"Not a dog. Control." His voice dropped. "You wear it. You stay alive and useful. I get my money back. Everybody wins except the two people who ruined your birthday."
She thought about Kieran’s hands on her mom. The casual way they admitted months. The drunk texts from weeks ago where he had typed things that made her feel wanted and dirty at the same time. Promises he never kept when sober.
"What if I say no?" she asked.
Damien shrugged. "I leak what I have. Your family name gets dragged through every financial scandal in the city. You lose your job. Your apartment. Everything. Or you sign and I fix it."
Isolde sat down slowly. Her hands would not stop trembling. "I hate you already."
"Good. Hate keeps people honest." He pulled papers from a drawer and set them in front of her with a pen. "Read it. Every line. I know you remember everything anyway."
She read. The words blurred at first but her memory locked each one in. Live-in. Shadow executive. Full access to her movements. The collar part made her stomach twist. Pleasure or pain feedback for compliance. It sounded humiliating. It sounded like a cage.
But the alternative was going back to nothing. To their faces. To pretending she had not seen what she saw.
"You are forty two right?" she said suddenly. "I am twenty four. This is sick."
"Age did not stop your boyfriend from choosing your mother." Damien’s tone stayed flat but something flickered in his eyes. "Sign or walk. Clock is ticking."
Isolde picked up the pen. Her fingers felt numb. "If I do this you swear you will ruin them?"
"I will do worse than ruin them."
She signed. The pen scratched loud in the quiet penthouse.
Damien took the papers. Then he opened a small black box. Inside sat a sleek silver necklace. Beautiful. Deadly looking.
"Stand up."
She stood. Legs shaky.
He moved behind her. His fingers brushed her wet hair aside. The collar clicked shut around her neck. Cool metal warmed against her skin almost immediately.
"There," he said. Voice low near her ear. "First rule. You belong to the contract now."
Isolde touched the collar. It felt too tight. Too permanent. A small vibration ran through it. Like a warning. Or a promise.
Damien stepped back. His eyes moved over her again. Slower this time.
"Welcome home Isolde. We start work tomorrow. Tonight you rest."
She wanted to scream at him. Wanted to run. But the collar sat there. Heavy. And somewhere in her chest a dark little voice whispered that at least here she did not have to face them.
Not yet.
Damien poured himself another drink. "One more thing. When I drink I sometimes forget how gentle I should be. Remember that."
Isolde swallowed. The city lights outside blurred through the rain streaked windows.
What the hell had she just done?
