The following day which was a Tuesday morning, Mila who was still lying asleep on her old small bed that was fitted for just one person was abruptly forced awake by the harsh banging sound on her door.
"You lazy i***t, it's morning and you are still in bed? Wake up! You've got work to do!" Danielle yelled at the top of her smoky croaky voice with her hand akimbo while leaning forward as she stood beside Mila's bed after she had forcefully pushed the door open and barged in.
This wasn't something new to Mila, especially on rare occasions like this when she would be allowed to spend the night in her house by her boss because she normally did a night shift due to her working schedule.
But after being able to go home before the normal closing hour, she got to sleep at home and now she would have to endure this.
Slowly sitting up on her bed, it made a creaking sound as she stretched her aching body with a loud yawn. Thanks to the medicine she had taken last night on an empty stomach after that round of beating from Danielle, her body now ached less.
Not bothering to wish her stepmother a good morning, Mila gave her a side stare while wondering what the woman would make her do this time.
Sleeping at work was way better than having to spend the night here. Because back at the bar, even though they all ended up sleeping late, it was a way more better and peaceful sleep than this.
"Don't give me that stare, get up on your feet and follow me," Danielle growled as she landed a heavy knock right atop Mila's head, its impact causing poor Mila to wince in pain as she instinctively pressed her fingers on the area of her head that was knocked on by Danielle.
The unexpected knock on her head caused her to feel a little wave of dizziness as the headache that was already banging her head only increased, causing her face to twist in pain and displeasure.
Not wanting to go through any more physical torment, she slowly climbed out of bed and stood before the ever-so-grumpy Danielle, this little action of leaving the bed caused another wave of dizziness to strike Mila as she closed her eyes tightly to endure the discomfort.
Seeing Mila was now on her feet, Danielle snorted and she walked towards the door and was ready to walk out to show Mila what chores she would be doing today before leaving for the bar.
However, a loud growling sound coming from Mila's stomach, an indication of hunger made her halt in her steps and she turned to face Mila.
"Hungry? Well, you only get to eat after you are done with what I will assign to you. Now come along," she ordered and stepped out of Mila's bedroom and Mila wordlessly followed to avoid being scolded or even beaten.
Danielle instructed Mila to get loads of work done in the house, from cleaning the house and doing the dishes to doing everyone's laundry, then clear up the farm and trim the hoof of the three cows in the yard. Afterward, she was also instructed to fill up the bug drum outside the house after she was done feeding the cows.
Danielle had also instructed her to prepare breakfast before the clock would strike eleven.
Almost an hour had now passed with Mila still working, even though her body ached all over, she dared not stop because that would only cause her trouble.
By now, she was done with the simple tasks and was now moving on to trimming the hoof of the cows which was the hardest work to do.
And while Mila struggled to get the work done, her thoughts were only filled with last night and what had happened. However, no matter how hard she tried to remember something from last night, she just couldn't.
It was like it happened but at the same time didn't happen.
And who was that man? Was what happened between them planned? Or perhaps a mistake? Probably just a coincidence?
As much as so many questions filled her mind, Mila hoped to never come across that man ever again. Let that one nightstand be the first and only.
Her life was already difficult as it is, she didn't want anything that would add to it.
