Chapter 7
Meg called, asking Harper if he’d be willing to escort their mother to the oncologist in Chapel Hill the following day. He agreed, hoping Meg was right that people could really change, and sometimes for the better. They also planned to visit Tomorrow House after the appointment, so Harper could get the nickel tour and they could all have coffee together.
When Harper picked up his mother, the tension he anticipated between them during their drive to the hospital never materialized. It was like the anger he normally felt towards her, which had lessened since he arrived in Ridgefield, was suddenly in complete abeyance. Conversation in the car was nothing but friendly as they talked about his mother’s job at the library and the book Harper finished before he left Colorado.
