Chapter 7: The Hollow Watcher and the Sunken River

848 Words
Ayla’s body moved like a marionette on invisible, unbreakable strings, marching in a soulless, measured rhythm toward the blast doors. Inside her skull, her consciousness was screaming, but her motor nerves were locked down by root-level code. "Damn it," Adam hissed. He didn't grab her—that would only trigger the system's defensive shock. Instead, he drew his EMP dagger, moving with the lethal, fluid grace of a panther, and drove the blade precisely into the metal groove beside her neural port. *CRACK-HISS.* Ghost-blue arcs detonated. The sickening stench of searing flesh hit Ayla’s nose, followed instantly by her right eye plunging into absolute, permanent darkness. The cost of severing the hijack was an irreversible physical scorch to her optic nerve. But the reins of her body were hers again. "Take the vents. The thermal scanners can't penetrate the lead lining," Adam ordered, his arm wrapping tight around her waist, half-dragging, half-carrying her into the exhaust grate in the corner. Ten minutes later, they crawled out of a **derelict** discharge pipe at the edge of the Null Zone. Before them lay a tributary of London’s subterranean river, the air choking with the sharp, ammonia tang of raw sewage. Ayla slumped against the moss-slicked concrete, checking the vintage mechanical watch on her wrist with her remaining left eye. She needed to contact Chloe. In a city suffocated by algorithmic surveillance, Chloe was her only private assistant unlinked from the Resonance mainframe. Her only anchor in a world of synthetic illusions. Punching the encrypted frequency on her backup sat-comm, Chloe’s gentle, frantic voice bled through the static. "Ayla? Thank God! Your vitals flatlined for ten whole minutes! I’m at the D4 docks. Hurry!" A stealth-black hover-skiff glided silently into the dock. The hatch hissed open. Chloe stood bathed in the warm, amber cabin light, wearing her signature beige trench coat, reaching a hand out to her. "Get in. The Hounds are three minutes out," Chloe urged, her voice carrying that familiar, comforting warmth. Ayla stumbled across the threshold. Adam remained on the dock, melting into the deep shadows. He didn't board. But before the hatch sealed, his dark eyes locked onto hers for a fraction of a second—a silent, burning promise in the dark. The skiff surged forward, plunging into the abyssal river tunnel. Ayla collapsed onto the leather seat, dragging in ragged breaths. Chloe handed her a steaming towel. "Wipe your face. You look like hell." Ayla reached for it. But the microsecond her fingertips brushed the terrycloth, a violent dissonance spiked in her brain. Chloe’s fingertips were as cold as synth-meat pulled straight from a cryo-freezer. And in this cramped, violently vibrating cabin, her respiration was locked at a flawless, unvarying sixteen breaths per minute. Not a single micro-fluctuation. Ayla’s stomach dropped into a bottomless void. She bit down hard on her tongue, using the sharp copper tang of blood to shock her cortex, forcibly booting the 'True Spectrum' in her left eye. The toll this time was total sensory deprivation of pain. Ayla became a ghost in her own meat. She could dig her nails into her palms and feel absolutely nothing. In her vision, there were no colorful emotional codes hovering above Chloe’s head. Just a dead, horrifying expanse of ash-gray static. **[Target Status: Affect Stripping 100%. Current Directive: Purge the Contaminant.]** "You're not Chloe," Ayla’s voice was pure, fractured ice. She scrambled backward, her right hand dropping to the tactical knife sheathed in her boot. "I am Chloe, Ayla. I've just been... optimized." The gentle warmth vanished from Chloe’s face, replaced by a suffocating, mechanical serenity. She slowly drew a silver pulse-pistol from her coat pocket, the muzzle leveling dead at the space between Ayla’s eyes. "The system detected your emotional contamination is irreversible. As your designated watcher, my terminal protocol is to ensure the purity of Resonance." Chloe’s finger rested on the trigger, her eyes as hollow and dead as dry wells. "Don't struggle, Ayla. No pain is the greatest mercy the system bestows upon us." "Go to hell with your mercy." Ayla violently kicked the metal coffee table upward, throwing her body into a lateral roll. *BANG.* The ghost-blue pulse beam grazed Ayla’s shoulder, shattering the bulkhead. High-pressure air violently decompressed into the cabin. The skiff lost equilibrium, tilting at a sickening angle. Ayla felt no pain, but the kinetic impact pulverized her ribs. Riding the violent tilt, she smashed through the fractured viewport glass, tumbling out like a severed kite into the raging subterranean river below. The freezing black water violently invaded her sinuses. Blinded in her right eye, the abyssal current spun her like a ragdoll, entirely stripping her of spatial awareness. Her lungs burned, the edges of her consciousness fraying into black. But just before she blacked out, her good left eye caught a glimpse of the riverbed. Half-buried in the toxic silt lay dozens of corpses, all dressed in pristine Resonance executive suits. And the female corpse closest to her... Its eyelids suddenly snapped open. Two ghost-blue cyber-optics ignited in the murky water, locking dead onto her.
