Four Husbands

1563 Words
Snow couldn’t help letting out a coquettish hum as she lightly slapped the young man on top of her. The man was Evan, from the white fox tribe. Foxes were known for having the most handsome looks—and because their nature was inherently flirtatious, Snow had spent the longest time fooling around with him. “And whose fault is it that you spaced out earlier?” Evan complained, clearly displeased. “What’s so interesting about that stinking lion?” Snow quickly soothed him. What she loved most was watching her four men compete for her attention—like she was the center of the world, like those men couldn’t live without her. Thinking of that, Snow immediately clung to Evan and coaxed him for a long time. After Evan left, the cave remained filled with an indescribable scent for quite a while. Alex couldn’t help frowning. Strange. Normally, that kind of smell could easily stir up his desire… yet today, it only made him feel an uncomfortable irritation he couldn’t describe. His brows knit unconsciously. And what flashed through his mind… was unexpectedly the scene of Laura he had seen earlier. In the world of ice and snow, that woman looked like pure jade—skin like ice, bones like crystal. Her dark hair fluttered slightly in the wind, her brows and eyes as delicate as a painting, as if her gaze held the scenery of the mountains. “What’s wrong? Jealous again?” Snow wrapped in animal fur and sat beside him. Her body was covered in marks. Alex only gave a low “Mm,” not saying another word. Snow frowned. In the past he would’ve kissed her aggressively without hesitation—why was he so cold today? She had no idea what Alex went out to see. Instead, she subconsciously suspected those few females in the tribe who had grown up looking passable. Dissatisfaction flickered in her eyes. Looks like she needed to deal with them sooner. After pulling on warm clothes and shoes and putting on the hat she’d made from marten fur, Laura wrapped herself so tightly that only her beautiful eyes were visible. But Derek still couldn’t stop staring—because in his eyes, even with only her eyes showing, his little wife was breathtaking. “Let’s go.” Laura stuffed the dried rations into the bag on her back and said to Derek. Today, the two of them were going out together to search for herbs. Derek’s wounds weren’t fully healed yet. He couldn’t rely only on Laura’s spiritual spring water forever—he needed more medicine, especially a plant called Jadebone Grass, which specifically promoted bone growth. Derek’s crippled hind leg couldn’t afford to wait. Laura didn’t want her majestic big gray wolf to limp for the rest of his life. It had snowed heavily for many days. Though it had finally stopped, the accumulated snow was thick. Every step sank deep then shallow—uneven and exhausting. The modern world had never seen snow this deep. For others, this was nothing special. But for Laura, it was painfully difficult. She hadn’t even walked far enough that their home was out of sight, and already she was panting heavily, exhausted. Derek watched it all. Seeing the beads of sweat on Laura’s face, he said nothing—only silently squatted down in front of her. “Do you really need to?” Laura said awkwardly. “I said I’d help you find herbs…” She was the one who insisted on coming out, and now she’d barely walked a few steps—being carried like this felt embarrassing. “It’ll be faster,” Derek said. Laura: “……” So he thought she was too slow! “Oh.” She gave in. She was afraid if they moved at her pace, it would be dark before they even reached the destination. Just as Laura was about to climb onto his back, she saw the man suddenly shift on the spot—transforming into a snow wolf over a meter tall. Gray fur rippled in the wind, looking soft and warm. The next second, she watched that massive, handsome big gray wolf lower himself in front of her, pressing down with his head lowered—his posture one of submission. Laura climbed on naturally. She didn’t know that snow wolves were loyal and devoted—each one would have only a single mate for life. They would only lower their proud head in front of that mate. And they would only allow that mate to ride on their back. Feeling the light weight settle onto him, Derek’s heart softened completely. He moved his strong limbs and rushed toward their destination—fast and steady. Laura rode atop him, fingers buried in his gray fur, her face nearly sinking into it. That soft touch brushed against her cheek. And Laura’s heart fluttered with it. After a while— Laura felt the wolf stop. She lifted her head and saw a sheer cliff. “Is this where Jadebone Grass grows?” Staring at everything before her, Laura couldn’t help opening her mouth slightly in awe. It was breathtaking. White and silver covered the world. Every mountain peak looked like a jewel inlaid with snow crystals, shining with pure, holy light. The mountains seemed to become glaciers, as if the entire earth had been sealed beneath ice and snow—so beautiful it made one want to escape the noise of the world, to feel reverence and longing. Without realizing it, Laura opened her arms and took a step forward— But in the next moment, the silent big gray wolf beside her stopped her. He was still wearing the fiery red animal-fur coat Laura had made for him. In this world of pure white, he looked like a burning flame—wild, defiant, untamed. “Don’t go forward.” Laura didn’t understand. But she watched him suddenly crouch down, pick up an ice-frozen stone near his feet, and hurl it forward with force. Laura’s gaze followed the stone— And then she saw something shocking. The path ahead—something that looked solid and walkable—suddenly cracked like thin ice. It shattered inch by inch with sharp cracking sounds, collapsing together with the stone into a bottomless abyss. So deep it couldn’t even be seen. Laura’s face turned pale. The stone fell without even an echo. Which meant— the drop was terrifyingly deep. She instinctively reached out and grabbed the man’s sleeve. “What is that? Why does it look like there’s a road there?” Derek explained simply. The water mist in the valley below gathered here due to the terrain and couldn’t disperse. Over time, it froze and condensed together, forming something that looked like a solid path. Once it was covered in snow, it became even harder to distinguish. That was why people didn’t hunt during snow season. Because it was too dangerous. And if you didn’t return to shelter before nightfall— you could freeze to death. After hearing that, Laura suddenly felt like danger was everywhere beneath her feet. She unconsciously moved closer to the big gray wolf. In this place— only the big gray wolf could give her a sense of safety. The moment the woman came closer, Derek stiffened completely. A faint blush spread over his ears, yet he stood firmly in place, unwavering. In truth, he hadn’t said one thing: Only that spot was dangerous… and he had already destroyed it. The rest was safe. But— feeling the warm, soft contact against his arm, Derek nervously fiddled with the corner of his coat, looking strangely restless. And he chose not to reveal the truth. He even hoped his little wife would press closer. Laura didn’t dare wander too far. She stayed beside the big gray wolf the whole time, clutching the herb Derek had found for her as a reference sample, squatting down to search carefully. Unfortunately, the snow was too thick. After an entire morning, she had only found some common herbs—most of them frost-damaged. As for Jadebone Grass— there wasn’t even a shadow of it. Derek turned back by chance. What he saw made his expression change instantly. Laura’s fingers were red and swollen, slightly puffy from the cold. He stood up immediately, grabbed her hands in his, and with his other hand quickly lit a fire. “Hm? What’s wrong?” Laura asked. Her hands suddenly fell into the warm shelter of his palms, and warmth spread through her entire body. But being so close to the big gray wolf, her face grew slightly uncomfortable. Derek didn’t notice. He quickly built the fire, then pressed Laura down beside it. Warmth carrying the scent of firewood washed over her. Laura flexed her stiff fingers, and as the firelight lit her face, she finally realized— the big gray wolf had been worried she was too cold. A warm feeling seeped into her heart. Laura watched Derek’s busy figure and couldn’t help smiling softly. At that moment— Laura, who had grown up like wild grass… was feeling warmth from someone for the first time. It was also time to eat. When Laura felt her fingers loosen up, she took out the food from her bag and began preparing a simple meal.
