"Filing for a divorce?" Cassy gave a yell. "Has it gotten to this?"
How did the divorce paper get under her arm? Thinking about it, she has been writing down her thoughts for hours now. It's obvious she was so engrossed in it not to have seen Cain putting it there.
Flinging her room door open, she ran down the stairs, straight to the living room.
Panting, she yelled, "Darling, is this a joke or something?"
Cain ignored her with his head still bowed.
"What have I done to you darling to deserve this?"
Her thought roamed quickly to the other day. She went quiet.
She drew close to him this time, bent over and touched his nape.
"I'm sure you've signed the divorce paper," he replied as he raised his head suddenly. It almost caught her on the lower jaw.
"Are you kidding me? Don't even go there. We are stuck together forever."
"Not anymore Cassy. I want out. I don't believe in this thing called marriage anymore."
She looked straight into his eyeballs. He must tell her why he wants to leave the marriage.
"You can't just wake up overnight and say that you want to leave." She had creases over her face as she spoke. "What about all we share?"
"I didn't come up to this overnight. I swear I have been thinking about it for a while now."
Maybe Cain has been thinking about leaving her from that day Alexis f****d her. But she is not sure if he saw them.
She braced up now.
"Okay, can you tell me why you want to leave me and Chloe?" she asked quietly. The uncertainty of what to expect made her shut her eyes.
Cain will speak now. Her heart raced. It's like it's going to jump out of her rib.
What if he says, "Cassy, you are a cheat. You didn't even do it with someone out there but my own best friend?"
Hell will be let lose. She will not have the nerve to stand before him forever.
She opened her eyes and stared at him now. He still hasn't spoken. His face looks tougher now.
Eventually he spoke.
"You've done nothing wrong Cassy, but I need to leave. I don't feel like marriage is for me."
Cassy heaved a sigh of relief. She had just confirmed that he wasn't aware of what they did together then.
"Cain, don't leave me. I will just die if you do. You know I can't live a day without you."
"See, my dear Cassy," he put his hands on her shoulders, "My heart is fixed. I have to go now."
Without looking at her twice, he turned and walked out of the house.
Cassy sobbed. It was like a rocket just hit her hard on the head.
"Why is daddy speaking like that?" Chloe said as she entered the living room in haste. "And why are you weeping, mum?"
"It's fine Chloe," she said, trying to hide her wet face.
"I heard him clear enough, but is he really leaving us?"
She reached for her and carried her on her laps.
"Dad is not just in a good mood. He will come around soon."
Cain was going to meet Alexis, but he was with Maria.
"This i***t didn't tell me he won't be here." He kicked at the door in frustration as he grabbed his phone to make a call.
"I'm so scared right now," Maria said. She just took her eyes off Alexis' phone.
"You can see you're no more safe here," Alexis said. "They'll get to you in no time."
"I have to run, but to where? I don't even have enough money to do my papers," she lamented.
He stared at her for a while. How can she be so foolish? A little foxy story and she's buying it already. Maybe beauty does not really have to translate to soundness of the brain.
"I'll assist you make them. You have to be off to Brazil in no time at all," he said as he took his ringing phone to see who it was.
"Not now," he cut the call.
What has she done to those gangs that they want to see her dead as fast as possible? She's only a poor call girl trying to earn a living.
The other day, it was a strange voice she heard over the phone, threatening to find her wherever she was hiding.
Now Alexis just confirms it. She saw the conversation herself.
It's a pity that Maria fell for his tricks cheaply. He was the brain behind it all. He chatted himself up with two different phone apps and here goes the conversation:
Rogueman: Alexis, I need to confirm this stuff from you.
Myself: What's that, man? I want to go offline now.
Rogueman: This girl, do you know her? (the image of Maria popped up).
Alexis: Very well. I've f****d her a couple of times. What about her?
Rogueman: My gangs are coming for her. She slept with two of the Foxxler's cult members. You know we don't forgive girls who sleep with them.
Alexis: What! Please don't come for her. She's innocent. She's a call girl on duty. No strings attached.
Rogueman: She's a dead meat Alexis. Just forget about her. She's history already--a walking dead.
Maria stopped showing up in club houses now. She had to hide her head until her papers would be ready. She has done enough in the U.S already.
"It's time to leave quickly," she told Cain later on.
"But you can't leave me Maria," Cain held her tight.
"There's no stopping me now. They are after me." Her forehead folded up. She was in a big mess right now.
"Let me on them Maria. I'll fight till my last drop of blood...for you."
Maria chuckled uneasily. Seeing this, he asked, "Don't you believe me? I can kill for you."
"You have a wife and a daughter. Please go to them. Stay with them. Fight for them!"
Maria wriggled her way out of his grip. She was done.
Cain's eyes could not leave her body as she walked away swiftly. If they were laser lights, he would have magnetised her with them.
Apparently, she has made up her mind. Saving her life is her priority now, not s*x. If she dies, men would walk over her grave and won't have the urge anymore.
"It's only the living that can have s*x, not the dead," she told Alexis when he jokingly said to her, "We will all miss your sexy cunt.
Maria was off already. She didn't inform Cain before taking off, because she knew how emotional he would be.
But Alexis followed her to the airport.
"You're sure gonna light up Brazil with your sumptuous sizzling body tonight," he smiled.
"Whatever," she replied in smiles.
Cain's call came in.
"Hey Lexis, have you seen Maria? Her phone isn't going through. I can't reach her right now," his voice filtered out of the phone speaker.
"I've not seen her for a couple of days."
"Are you sure Lexis? Are you..."
Alexis hung up and then turned to Maria who was anticipating to hear from him.
"That's Rogueman and his gang. They are asking me if I saw you recently. They've searched everywhere for you and are still searching."
"Oh my gush!" she screamed as blood rushed into her face. "Come on, I have to hurry now!"
She pulled Alexis by the left wrist and ran ahead. He had to walk fast enough to keep pace with her.
"Freedom at last!" Maria screamed as the plane revved to life and nosedived. "Hooray!"
The man next to her in transit just noticed her now. His face looked tough, but now he wanted Maria's attention.
She shrieked in fright when she saw him.
"I'm doomed," she whispered to herself in fright. She thought it was Rogueman...
