Chapter 2The ambulance ride was relatively short, but everything before and after seemed interminable. Casey managed to dial my phone. Every word he spoke looked painful, but since I’d already found operating my TTY device with two mangled hands impossible, he gave the 911 dispatcher the necessary information.
No working hands meant no way to communicate, and that was freaking me out. My right hand had fingers pointing in directions no finger should point. Two on my left—the second and fourth—looked just as bad. I thought back to another time I was at the hospital with no way to communicate, how horrific it was. Fate brought me Eli that night. This time, he was thousands of miles away.
