VTHE SUN WAS UP OVER the horizon now, and we could see through the thin curtains. All around us was prairie, and a thin dual-track of a country dirt road that lead due east as far as we could see. There were intermittent willows, cottonwood, and birch in the various low lying areas, where the rains drained off into larger draws and gullies, all on their way to some creek and then river somewhere. For us, we saw no habitation within eye-shot, meaning it was at least 12 miles from where we stood to any civilization. We had no clue of time or area we were in, so shifting anywhere might be hazardous. The obvious next action was to find out how to get down from this "lighthouse" on the prairie.
