Cassandra’s POV
I heft the bag higher on my shoulder as I get out of the cab after I pay the fare. I felt anxious leaving but I knew I had to get out of here and start living my life and stop waiting for fate.
I hold my ticket in my hand as I begin to pull the luggage behind me. I feel eyes on me and I tense my shoulders as I scan my surroundings. I don’t see anyone but this does not mean someone wasn’t there. I walk to the check in counter and wait in line to check my baggage. It takes a while but that’s normal for any airline.
I keep checking my soundings but I don’t see anything or anyone. I watch a cute couple in the next line over keep touching each other and making out randomly as they wait their turn.
I sigh, that’s not something I’ll ever have. I think as I feel my heartache a bit at the thought. I can’t get close to people. Bad things happen when I depend on others. Grandma, Julie, it’s why I always kept others away. Even Michelle does even know me. She thinks she does but not really.
“Next.” The lady calls as I step up to the counter. I show her my ticket and place my luggage on the scale.
She doesn’t smile at me just checks in my ticket and begins printing tags for my bag. I tense as I feel eyes on me again, but I don’t look.
“Your just being paranoid, Cass.” I mumble to myself.
“Your all checked in. Go through security down in the main hallway, your at gait 23.” She says in a board voice.
I nod and thank her as I walk away. Relief filled me as I reach the line for security. It only takes me about 20 minutes to get though as I had come early so I don’t miss my flight. I walk to gate 23 and find a seat as they won’t board for another half hour. It’s not super busy but I know that will change.
My phone begins to ring and I look to see it’s Michelle. I ignore the call and look out the window at plains arriving and departing. I feel someone sit down beside me but I don’t look up at them.
“Beautiful isn’t?” They ask. I turn my head and see a older man with graying black hair. He has green eyes that are the color of a meadow. He is wearing slacks and a button up shirt dress with long sleeves. I’m not sure what to say so I don’t say anything.
“They are all coming and going about their lives. Some chasing dreams, some working, some just not knowing how to live. But each person is chasing something whether they know it or not.” He states still looking out the window.
I pause and look at him closely now. He turns his head and looks at me. Something about the man makes me feel strangely. Like we share a connection, but I’m not sure what it is.
“Never thought of it that way.” I state as I wish security didn’t take my pepper spray. I turn away from him thinking about how I can get away from him.
“What are you chasing?” He asks me. I freeze and look back at him wide eyed. “ Your either chasing something or running. Most people are.” He says looking back out the window.
I narrow my eyes at him and look more closely at him. I can slightly see his aura that red and green.
I gasp and stand up suddenly as fear begins to over take me. He looks at me quizzical.
“Excuse me” I mumble and grab my bag and walk into the ladies room.
Auras crap! Double crap! This is not good fate is b***h! It’s wearing off! What am I going to do? I wonder as I splash water on my face trying to calm down.
“Don’t worry honey.” The lady next to me states. “ these plains rarely crash.”
I feel a hysterical bubble of laughter rise in my chest. This lady thinks i am afraid of flying. I turn and smile at her as she finishes drying her hands and leaves the bathroom. I grab a paper towel and put it to my face trying to think through about my next step is. As I pull the paper towel away I see a young woman standing behind me, she doesn’t say anything. I see her indifferent eyes and staring holes in the back of my head.
I’m about to ask her what I can do for her when she reaches up and grabs my hair and yanks my head back before I can even scream, her hand covers my mouth cutting off my sedan as my scalp aches. Before her hand is removed and replaced with a knife at my throat.
“Make a sound and I’ll kill you.” She states.
My eyes widen as I look up at her. I notice a scar running her her ear to her lower jaw. She smells like burnt embers that has a putrid aroma.
“You think we wouldn’t find a way around your little masking spell? We knew you would get sloppy at some point.” She sneers at me.
Tears burn down my cheeks as I feel the blade cut into my neck. She throws me forward toward the mirror and it’s cracks as she slambs my face against it and it cuts into my skin. I whipper as fear causes my whole body to tremble.
She leans forward taking a deep breath and licking my face and the tears that are falling freely.
“Ugh, I can smell and taste your purity, disgusting.” She spits at me with venom. I can feel the blood dripping down my neck as she shoves me harder into the mirror.
“What do you want?” I whimper.
She laughs. “ Like you don’t know, Little Phase.”
“I don’t. I have no idea who you are.” I state become angry at my helplessness.
She is quiet a moment as she narrows her eyes at me.
“Well damn! That old hag didn’t tell you did she?” She states surprised.
Before I could respond the door opens with a bang and the man from before is standing there with glowing green eyes. The lady drags me on my knees by my hair and puts the bald back to my neck.
“Elemental.” She hisses at the man.
Pushing the knife deeper causing a steady stream of blood to trickle from my neck. I whimper and plead with my eyes for the man to help me but he just keeps his eyes on the woman.
“Let her go.” He states with power causing the lady to laugh.
“You think your little parlor tricks will stop me?” She cackles “We have been waiting for years for the b***h to resurface. No one but the Blood Coven will get her. Your all too weak.”
As she states this she throws the knife at the man as he charges her. The knife falls to the ground. His hands lighting with a green light. She let go of my hair and I fall to the ground hitting my head on the floor. Black dots flash though my vision and a copper taste feels my mouth. It’s begins to smell like ozone in the room and everything spins as I open my eyes to see the ladies hands throwing red lights at the man.
Oh great Cass. You’ve lost it, your being attacked and your mind is snapping. I think to myself.
“Run!” The man says as he continues to fight with the woman.
Run. I don’t think I can even stand but I feel compelled to follow what he said. Some how my body tries to stand but as I do one of the red lights from her hands shoots out at me and hits me in the left hip. I go down screaming as pain I’ve never felt before erupted though my left leg and hip. The lady cackles like a manic. I push through the pain and stand up my body screaming in agony as it ties to follow his command. Sweat dripped from my face mixing with the blood coating the floor.
My had grasps the knife on the floor as I stand push off the tiles. I grasp the door and throw it open and run out. Blood drips into my eye and I see men in suits running at me once they see me. I begin to run the other way and down though the crowd pushing people as I go. I slam into a solid wall and fall back to the floor. I look up into the eyes of the man who delivered the invitation from Marcus James.
“It’s okay Andrea.” He states using my business name, his hand up in a calming gesture.
I gasp and do the only thing I can do. I plunge the knife into his thigh as he reaches down to grab me. He curses as his leg goes out from under him. I grab the knife taking it with me rolling so he doesn’t go down on top of me and he growls in pain. I begin to run as I see men running at me from all directions and people begin to run screaming from the scene.
I run down the stairs as I see a lady from bathroom step out and begin to throw the same red light things at the men.
Well damn! What is going on?
Fear takes over as I stumble at the bottom of the stairs and begin to weave towards the exit just as take another step I’m hit from behind by the heaviest weight takes me to the ground. The air is pushed from my lungs. I try to get up just as a explosion of red light hits the area just above where I’m laying.
I terrifying growl rumbles and I swear I can feel it shake the floor. The weight is pulled off me suddenly and I can breathe again. I’m lifted from the floor just in time to see the lady disappear. One minute she is there the next she just winks out of existence.
I begin to hyperventilate and everything has a dark tinge around my vision.
“Breathe Andrea.” I hear.
Strong arms hold me as my legs give out. I look up into hazel eyes just as darkness overshadows me. The last thing I remember is the words rumbling to me.
“MATE.”
