Chapter 2: The Collision of Ice and Fire
Since the exhibition, Qiu Ze often found himself reflecting on Lin Xiao's coldness and uniqueness. Every time he passed by one of her paintings, he would unconsciously stop, as if the world behind the artwork was silently speaking to him. Though Lin Xiao always kept her distance, he felt that their encounter was not just a simple coincidence.
One weekend, Qiu Ze was invited to a gathering in the architecture world. The event was hosted by an important client, and Qiu Ze brought along some design proposals and ideas, hoping to seize the opportunity to win some projects. Upon arriving at the venue, Qiu Ze immediately spotted Lin Xiao—she stood in a corner, calmly holding a glass of wine, and the people around her seemed to be avoiding her, as if she naturally exuded an aura that made her difficult to approach.
Qiu Ze felt an inexplicable attraction and found himself walking toward her. Determined, he decided that this time, he would talk to her and break through her defenses.
“What are you doing here?” Qiu Ze casually asked as he stood behind her, his voice tinged with a bit of playful sarcasm. “Not trying to avoid these long-winded architects, are you?”
Lin Xiao paused for a moment, then turned to look at him, her gaze still cold. “I’m here because I was invited. And you, you should be here for your career.”
Qiu Ze didn’t get upset; instead, he smiled. “Looks like you know me well. Indeed, the one thing I dislike most at these events is all the insincere socializing.”
“I hate those who only seek to please others and speak empty words,” Lin Xiao replied coolly, as though discussing something unrelated. “People like you, architects, seem calm and rational on the surface, but inside, you’re filled with desire and ambition.”
Her blunt words stung, but Qiu Ze’s eyes sparkled with a hint of challenge. “So, what do you think of me?”
Lin Xiao narrowed her eyes slightly, studying him silently. After a moment, she said softly, “You just want to conquer someone who’s hard to conquer.”
Her words made Qiu Ze’s heart skip a beat. He hadn’t expected Lin Xiao to see through his intentions so clearly. Beneath her cold exterior, she possessed such sharp insight. He had thought that his humor and intelligence could break through her defenses, but her simple analysis made him feel completely exposed.
“You’re quite an interesting woman,” Qiu Ze said with admiration, but also with a tinge of frustration. “However, I won’t give up easily.”
Lin Xiao simply glanced at him and shook her head slightly. “You’ll never understand.”
Qiu Ze was taken aback, feeling frustrated that he couldn’t understand her thoughts. Her coldness only stirred a stronger desire to challenge her. Lin Xiao seemed like someone who could never be fully grasped. Every response she gave was calm and distant, making him want to get closer, but unsure how to break through.
This conversation was like the collision of ice and fire. Qiu Ze’s passion and humor clashed with Lin Xiao’s calmness and aloofness, the difference between them exploding in that moment, making their relationship more complex. Though Qiu Ze hadn’t fully broken through her defenses, he knew that this battle had just begun.
Over the following days, Qiu Ze found himself thinking more and more about Lin Xiao, while she seemed to be intentionally avoiding him. Her art exhibitions and social events were frequent, but she always kept her distance from him. Though Qiu Ze felt frustrated at times, he never gave up. For him, this challenge wasn’t just about conquest; it was about getting closer to her frozen heart and uncovering all the secrets she kept hidden.
Lin Xiao, on the other hand, began to realize that Qiu Ze was not an ordinary man. His humor and confidence were no longer just a surface level that annoyed her, but carried a sincerity she couldn’t ignore. Her inner defenses were not impossible to break, but she couldn’t bring herself to trust anyone so easily, especially not someone like Qiu Ze.
Their relationship seemed to be shrouded by an invisible frost, sometimes warm, sometimes piercing. This complex emotional entanglement, fueled by the ice and fire in their hearts, was quietly brewing deeper waves of change.
