Chapter 4: Gradually Drawing Closer
As time passed, the relationship between Qiu Ze and Lin Xiao subtly changed. Although she still maintained her calmness and distance, Qiu Ze began to feel that her defenses were slowly loosening. During the few encounters that followed, Lin Xiao no longer remained silent like she had the first time. Instead, she gradually began to respond to his greetings. Though her tone was still neutral, it no longer carried the same rejection as before.
Qiu Ze didn’t rush to break through her defenses but chose to wait patiently. He understood that Lin Xiao’s inner world was far more complex than it appeared on the outside, and he couldn’t force his way in. This waiting allowed their relationship to slowly undergo subtle changes.
One day, Qiu Ze finally got his opportunity. It was a typical afternoon, and he was busy at the office when he suddenly received a message from Lin Xiao. She said she wanted to treat him to coffee and discuss architecture and art.
“This is a rare opportunity,” Qiu Ze thought to himself, pleased. He knew that Lin Xiao initiating contact was a signal that she was starting to move closer to him.
They agreed to meet at a quiet little café. Qiu Ze arrived early and sat by the window, waiting for her. The sunlight outside streamed through the glass, casting warm rays on him. The aroma of coffee filled the air, and although he felt a bit nervous, there was more anticipation in his heart.
About half an hour later, Lin Xiao finally walked into the café. She was still wearing her black trench coat, exuding elegance, but this time, she didn’t deliberately maintain her usual coldness. Instead, she gave Qiu Ze a slight nod and sat down.
“What made you decide to invite me for coffee?” Qiu Ze couldn’t help but ask, his tone tinged with a bit of teasing.
Lin Xiao glanced at him, offering a faint smile. “Maybe it’s because you were right. There are indeed many similarities between architecture and art.”
Qiu Ze was taken aback by her direct response. A warmth surged in his heart, as if the distance between them had finally narrowed a little.
“Indeed, art is not just paint on a canvas, and architecture is not just bricks and cement. Both express emotion, both convey a certain power,” Qiu Ze said softly, his voice gentle and sincere.
Lin Xiao looked at him, her eyes showing a hint of surprise, before settling back into calmness. “I’ve always thought that architecture is cold, whereas paintings are a collision of passion and warmth.”
Qiu Ze smiled. “Perhaps I misunderstood. The line between architecture and painting isn’t so clear. At least for me, both carry emotion; they just express it in different ways.”
Their conversation was easy and natural, like two people traveling on parallel tracks that were slowly converging. Lin Xiao was no longer as cautious as before, beginning to reveal some of her understanding of art and the motivations behind her creations. Qiu Ze, too, saw in her eyes that the hard defensive barrier was beginning to show some softness.
Time in the café passed quickly. They talked about many things, from architecture to art, from personal interests to the trivialities of life. Qiu Ze discovered that Lin Xiao was not only a talented artist but also had a keen eye for life and deep thoughts. Lin Xiao, too, gradually realized that Qiu Ze was not the frivolous man she had once thought him to be. His depth and humor, his rationality and emotional insight, intertwined to create a unique charm.
As they left the café, the sun had started to set, and the air carried the freshness of early autumn. Lin Xiao didn’t immediately say goodbye but paused and turned to Qiu Ze. “Thank you. Today’s conversation was very enjoyable.”
Qiu Ze was momentarily stunned. He hadn’t expected her to say that, and a warm feeling surged within him. He smiled and replied, “I’m glad we had the chance to talk.”
They walked out of the café side by side, a subtle warmth hanging in the air. Lin Xiao didn’t immediately walk away but stayed by his side for a while longer, until they reached an intersection, at which point they said their farewells.
“Goodbye,” Lin Xiao said softly, watching him leave.
“Goodbye, Lin Xiao,” Qiu Ze called over his shoulder, feeling an unexplainable sense of determination rise within him. He knew that today’s conversation marked a turning point in their relationship.
Their distance was slowly shrinking, and the once explosive clash of ice and fire was gradually being replaced by a warm force. This was just the beginning, but Qiu Ze knew that this relationship was heading in a much more beautiful direction.
