Chapter 5: Another Misunderstanding
Qiu Ze began to feel that his relationship with Lin Xiao had undergone significant changes. Every time they met, the distance between them seemed to slowly disappear, replaced by more understanding and rapport. Qiu Ze found himself looking forward to their conversations every day. Each meeting revealed that her smile was becoming more natural, and the wariness in her eyes was gradually fading. However, just as their relationship was warming up, a sudden misunderstanding caused them to fall back into a distance.
The incident began during a collaboration on a project. Qiu Ze and Lin Xiao were working together on a design that combined architecture and art. Lin Xiao’s artistic works often influenced Qiu Ze’s designs, while Qiu Ze’s rational thinking helped Lin Xiao find the balance between structure and form in her creations. They began to discuss the proposal frequently, and their face-to-face communication became more frequent and closer than before.
However, one day, after a meeting, Qiu Ze accidentally saw a message on his phone. It was a text sent by Lin Xiao to a man named "Yi Chen." The message wasn’t long, but it made Qiu Ze’s heart sink: “Are you free tonight? I want to discuss something with you.”
This message stirred a storm of emotions inside Qiu Ze. Despite Lin Xiao’s consistently distant and independent behavior, he couldn’t help but question: Who was Yi Chen? Why did she maintain such a close connection with him? Unease started to rise within him, and he began replaying every detail since they met. Had he misunderstood Lin Xiao all along? Or had she never truly had feelings for him?
Filled with confusion and anxiety, Qiu Ze decided to confront Lin Xiao directly. He took a deep breath and knocked on her studio door.
“Lin Xiao, can we talk?” Qiu Ze’s voice was heavy. He tried to control his emotions, but the message felt like a thorn, making him uneasy.
Lin Xiao looked up at him with a hint of surprise in her eyes before nodding and gesturing for him to come in. Qiu Ze walked into her studio and got straight to the point: “I saw the message you sent to Yi Chen. What’s your relationship with him?”
Lin Xiao’s expression immediately became stern, her eyebrows raised slightly. “Why are you asking this all of a sudden?”
Qiu Ze gritted his teeth, a surge of anger rising within him. “I saw you saying you wanted to discuss something with him. You never mentioned him before, so I’m confused. Are you hiding something from me?”
Lin Xiao’s gaze sharpened, and she coldly responded, “Do you really care that much?”
Qiu Ze was stunned for a moment, a sharp pain stabbing at his heart. Her indifference made him feel rejected again, as if she had never allowed him to truly enter her inner world. His emotions slipped out of control, and he couldn’t help but raise his voice: “I’m not trying to interfere in your relationships with others, but if you’re hiding something from me, we should clarify it.”
Lin Xiao’s face darkened, and after a moment of silence, she slowly spoke: “You’ve misunderstood.” Her tone was no longer cold but tinged with helplessness. “Yi Chen is my friend. We’ve worked together on some art projects before. That message was just to arrange a discussion about our next collaboration.”
Qiu Ze felt a sense of relief wash over him after hearing her explanation, but then a feeling of inexplicable shame surged within him. “I… I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions about you.” His voice lowered, as though acknowledging his immaturity.
Lin Xiao looked at him, and there was no anger in her eyes, only deep exhaustion. She sighed and said, “You always do this—distrust me, and distrust our relationship. I know your suspicions come from insecurity, but that doesn’t solve anything. It only pulls us farther apart.”
Qiu Ze lowered his head, deeply self-reproaching. In that moment, he realized that his inner insecurity and doubts about Lin Xiao had caused him to lose his rationality. He had always believed that he could handle everything, using humor and intelligence to overcome any difficulty, but when it came to Lin Xiao, he found himself losing control of his emotions and failing to think logically.
“I’m sorry,” Qiu Ze finally spoke, his voice low. “I know I was wrong. I was too anxious, afraid of losing you.”
Lin Xiao looked at him with a complex gaze. “Why do you always keep everything bottled up inside? If you’re truly insecure, why didn’t you tell me sooner? We don’t need to be suspicious of each other.” Her tone was calm, yet it conveyed a rare firmness. “I don’t want to continue like this.”
Qiu Ze’s heart sank. He finally understood that his impulsiveness and misunderstanding had almost destroyed the fragile bond between them. He walked up to her, his eyes filled with regret. “I shouldn’t have let my emotions affect you. I will change.”
Lin Xiao looked at him, seemingly contemplating for a moment, before gently nodding. “Alright. But from now on, if there’s an issue, we need to communicate properly. Only communication can help us understand each other, not suspicion and misunderstandings.”
Qiu Ze took a deep breath, feeling an unprecedented weight settle on him. He knew that behind this misunderstanding was not just his insecurity and assumptions, but a profound test of their relationship. Although they hadn’t completely resolved all their issues today, at least they had taken the first step, beginning to face their emotions and acknowledge the pain and insecurity that had been ignored.
This misunderstanding, though it brought their relationship to a standstill, had paved the way for future honesty and understanding. Qiu Ze knew that only by learning to trust and communicate could he truly get closer to Lin Xiao’s heart and enter her world.
