The Shadow That Answers

977 Words
The forest didn’t feel like home anymore. It felt like something watching. Waiting. Breathing. The howl echoed again—closer now, lower, distorted in a way that made every instinct recoil. It wasn’t just a wolf. Every member of the pack knew it. They felt it in their bones. Kael moved first. “Form up,” he ordered. The command snapped through the clearing, cutting through fear, hesitation, doubt. Wolves shifted instantly—trained, disciplined, forming a defensive line along the edge of the training grounds. But the formation wasn’t perfect. Not like it used to be. Because now— they were divided. And fear had roots. Kael’s gaze flicked to Elara. “Stay behind me.” Elara’s jaw tightened. “No.” The word came before she could stop it. Firm. Unyielding. Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly. Not in anger. In assessment. “You don’t know what’s out there.” “Neither do you,” she replied. A beat passed. Tense. Charged. Then— unexpectedly— Kael nodded once. “Then you stay with me.” Not behind. With. The distinction wasn’t lost on anyone. The First Sight The trees shifted. Not from wind. Not from movement. But from something pushing through them. Slow. Deliberate. Unnatural. The first figure stepped into view. And the world seemed to dim. It was a wolf. But wrong. Its fur was dark—not just black, but absorbing light. Its eyes— glowed faintly with a dull, silver-gray hue. Not alive. Not fully. More figures followed behind it. Silent. Still. Wrong. A ripple of unease moved through the pack. “What are those…” someone whispered. Elara didn’t answer. Because she already knew. Not by name. Not by understanding. But by feeling. The warmth inside her reacted instantly. Not with fear. With resistance. Like opposing forces meeting. “…They’re not just wolves,” she said quietly. Kael didn’t take his eyes off them. “No,” he agreed. “…they’re not.” The First Strike There was no warning. No growl. No signal. The lead creature lunged. Fast. Faster than any normal wolf. Kael moved to intercept— but Elara reacted first. Instinct surged. The warmth exploded outward— but this time— it wasn’t uncontrolled. It met the creature mid-air. A burst of energy collided with it— and for a moment— everything froze. Then— the creature was thrown back. Slamming into the ground with a force that cracked the earth beneath it. Silence. Then chaos. The rest of them charged. Battle Breaks The clearing erupted. Wolves shifted mid-motion. Claws met claws. Teeth snapped. The sound of impact, growls, and breaking earth filled the air. But something was wrong. The dark wolves— they didn’t fight like normal wolves. They didn’t hesitate. Didn’t react to pain. Didn’t fall when they should. Elara saw one take a full strike— and keep moving. Unaffected. Her chest tightened. “Kael—!” “I see it,” he snapped. He drove one back with brute force— but even then— it rose again. Something deeper was at play. The Opposite Force Elara focused. Not on the chaos. Not on the fear. On the feeling. The warmth inside her flared again— but now— she felt something else. Something pressing against it. Cold. Heavy. Corrupt. Her breath hitched. “…They’re connected to it.” Kael turned slightly. “To what?” Elara’s voice dropped. “…Whatever I am.” But darker. Twisted. An opposite. Loss of Control One of the creatures lunged again— this time at one of the younger wolves. Too fast. Too close. Elara didn’t think. She reacted. The power surged— stronger than before. Faster. Wilder. It struck the creature— but it didn’t stop there. The wave expanded. Slamming into the ground— into the wolves— into everything around her. A shockwave tore through the clearing. Sending bodies back. Dust rising. Silence crashing in. Elara froze. Horror flooding her chest. “…No.” Her hands trembled. “I didn’t—” Kael’s Stand Before panic could take over— Kael stepped forward. Between her— and the pack. His voice cut through everything. “Stand down.” It wasn’t a request. It wasn’t a suggestion. It was an Alpha command. Absolute. The wolves stilled. Even the fear paused. Kael didn’t turn to them. He didn’t look away from the threat. But his voice carried. “No one touches her.” The words settled. Heavy. Protective. Final. Elara stared at him. Because in that moment— he didn’t hesitate. Didn’t doubt. Didn’t question her. He chose her. The Retreat The dark wolves stilled. Not retreating. Not advancing. Watching. Then— as suddenly as they had come— they withdrew. Melting back into the forest. Silent. Unnatural. Gone. Aftermath The clearing was ruined. Cracked earth. Scattered bodies. Shaken wolves. And at the center— Elara. Standing in the middle of it all. Breathing hard. Power still flickering beneath her skin. Mara stared at her. Not with anger anymore. With something colder. “…You see?” she said quietly. “This is what she brings.” The words spread. Like poison. Elara felt it. The doubt. The fear. The division. And for a moment— it almost broke her. But then— the warmth inside her steadied. Not reacting. Not surging. Holding. Waiting. Like it trusted her— even when she didn’t trust herself. The Realization Kael turned to her. “…You felt it.” It wasn’t a question. Elara nodded slowly. “…It’s like me.” A pause. Then— “…but wrong.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Then whatever this is…” His gaze shifted to the forest. Dark. Silent. Watching. “…it’s not just coming for the pack.” His eyes returned to her. Sharp. Certain. “…it’s coming for you.”
