The Surge

865 Words
The moment it hit him, Kael knew something was wrong. Not the kind of wrong that could be dismissed or ignored. Not a passing disturbance in the territory or the restless unease of a shifting pack. This was sharper. Closer. Personal. The sensation tore through his chest like a sudden strike of lightning—fast, violent, and impossible to anticipate. One moment he was seated behind his desk, scanning over reports brought in from the southern border, and the next— his entire body went rigid. The parchment crumpled beneath his grip. Kael inhaled sharply, his breath catching halfway as something unfamiliar surged through him. Not pain. But close enough that his instincts reacted the same way. His wolf stirred immediately beneath his skin, alert and agitated, a low growl building deep in his chest before he could suppress it. The room seemed to narrow. The edges of his vision sharpened. And all at once, his awareness shifted inward. Toward the bond. Kael’s jaw clenched. It pulsed again. Stronger this time. Alive in a way it hadn’t been since the ceremony. That faint, irritating thread he had spent the past day forcing into the background had transformed into something undeniable. It wasn’t passive anymore. It was active. Demanding. And worst of all— it was pulling him. Toward her. “No,” Kael muttered under his breath, his voice low and edged with irritation. “Not again.” Another surge. This time it carried more than sensation. Emotion spilled through the bond in jagged, uneven waves. Fear. Confusion. Panic— And beneath it— something else. Something that didn’t belong. Kael’s eyes darkened. That wasn’t omega energy. It wasn’t weak. It wasn’t fragile. It wasn’t submissive. It was— Powerful. Raw. Unstable. Dangerous. Kael pushed back from his desk abruptly, the chair scraping sharply against the wooden floor as he stood. The sound echoed through the room, but he barely registered it. His focus was locked entirely on the sensation inside him. On her. The bond flared again. Stronger. Brighter. It spread through his chest, down his arms, into his fingertips—electric, charged, as if something was trying to force its way through the connection. His wolf growled. That’s not right. No. It wasn’t. Kael’s gaze snapped toward the window, though there was nothing there to see. Nothing but trees and morning light. And yet— he could feel her. Not physically. Not clearly. But enough. Enough to know something was happening. Something he didn’t understand. Something he didn’t like. The air in the room shifted suddenly. A loose scroll slid off the edge of his desk and hit the floor with a soft thud. Kael stilled. His gaze dropped to it slowly. Then lifted again. His expression darkened further. “…Impossible.” That wasn’t coincidence. It couldn’t be. The timing was too precise. Too aligned with the surge he felt through the bond. Which meant— whatever was happening to her… was affecting him. A sharp knock broke the silence. Kael didn’t turn. “Enter.” The door opened, and Lucien stepped inside without hesitation. His expression was already alert. Concerned. “You felt that,” he said immediately. Kael exhaled slowly. “You didn’t?” Lucien shook his head once. “Not like you did. But something moved through the territory. The wolves are restless. Agitated.” Kael’s jaw tightened. Of course they were. If even a fraction of what he felt had spread outward— it would be enough. “It’s her,” Kael said. Lucien’s brows drew together slightly. “You’re certain?” Kael didn’t hesitate. “I felt it through the bond.” Lucien was quiet for a moment. Thinking. Calculating. “That shouldn’t be possible,” he said finally. Kael’s gaze sharpened. “I’m aware.” Silence stretched between them again. Heavy. “What did it feel like?” Lucien asked. Kael didn’t answer right away. Because the truth… wasn’t something he wanted to admit. “…Power,” he said finally. Lucien’s expression shifted. Subtle. But unmistakable. “From an omega?” Kael’s eyes flashed dangerously. “Don’t.” Lucien raised his hands slightly in surrender. “I’m just stating the obvious.” Kael turned away, his mind already moving ahead. If this was real— if what he felt wasn’t some distortion— then everything he thought he knew about her… was wrong. And that made her dangerous. Not because of what she was— but because of what she might become. The bond pulsed again. Softer now. But still present. Still pulling. Kael exhaled slowly. Decision settling into place. “Where is she?” Lucien didn’t hesitate. “Storage area.” Kael nodded once. Then turned toward the door. “I’m going.” Lucien watched him carefully. “That won’t stay quiet.” Kael paused briefly. Then— “Good.” Because if something had changed— if something was awakening— he needed to see it. Understand it. Control it. Before it became something he couldn’t. The door opened. Light spilled in. And the bond— for the first time— felt like it was leading him somewhere he could no longer refuse to go.
