When Power Meets Power

849 Words
Elara couldn’t shake the feeling. It clung to her like a shadow, following her every movement as she moved through the storage room, trying—failing—to focus on something as simple as counting supplies. Her hands weren’t steady. Her thoughts weren’t quiet. And the warmth inside her… it hadn’t faded. If anything, it had grown stronger. Aware. Listening. Waiting. Elara exhaled slowly, gripping the edge of the wooden table in front of her. “Just stop,” she whispered under her breath. But it didn’t. It never did. Instead, it pulsed faintly in response—like it had heard her. Like it was… aware of her fear. That thought alone made her chest tighten. Because if it was aware— then it wasn’t just power. It was something more. Something she didn’t understand. Something she wasn’t ready for. A sudden shift in the air made her freeze. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t obvious. But it was unmistakable. The kind of presence that pressed down on everything around it. Heavy. Dominant. Unavoidable. Her breath caught. The warmth inside her flared instantly. Not calm. Not curious. Alert. Reactive. Almost— defensive. Elara turned slowly. And there he was. Alpha Kael Draven stood in the doorway. Still. Silent. Watching her. The world seemed to still around him. Everything—the light filtering through the doorway, the faint movement of dust in the air—seemed to bend around his presence. He didn’t need to speak. Didn’t need to move. The power he carried was enough. Elara’s heart began to pound. Hard. Fast. Not just from fear. From the bond. It surged the moment their eyes met. Stronger than anything she had felt before. It crashed into her like a wave— pulling. Tightening. Refusing to be ignored. Her breath hitched. Kael stepped forward. Slow. Controlled. Every step deliberate. “What,” he said, his voice low and steady, “are you doing?” Elara blinked. Her mind scrambled to catch up. “I—I’m working,” she said quickly. It was the wrong answer. She knew it the moment she said it. Kael’s gaze sharpened. “Don’t lie to me.” The command wasn’t loud. But it carried weight. Authority. Power. It pressed against her instinctively, demanding obedience. For a moment— just a moment— Elara felt it. That familiar pull to submit. To lower her head. To shrink. But something inside her resisted. The warmth surged. Pushing back. Not aggressively— but firmly. Like it refused to let her bow. Kael noticed. His eyes darkened. “…Interesting.” Elara swallowed hard. “I’m not lying,” she said, more carefully this time. “Then explain,” Kael said, stepping closer, “why I can feel you from across the territory.” Her breath caught. He felt it. Of course he did. The bond. She should have known. “I don’t know what you mean,” she said, though the words came weaker now. Kael stopped a few feet away from her. Close enough that she could feel the heat of his presence. Close enough that the bond between them tightened painfully. “Don’t,” he said quietly, “insult me.” The air shifted. Heavy. Charged. Elara’s heart raced faster. “Something is happening to you,” Kael continued. “And whatever it is—” His gaze flickered briefly around the room. To the fallen shelf. The displaced crates. The subtle disorder. Then back to her. “—it’s not normal.” Elara’s throat tightened. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen,” she said softly. And that, at least, was true. Kael studied her. Not with dismissal. Not with immediate rejection. But with something far more dangerous. Focus. “Show me,” he said. Elara froze. “What?” “Whatever you’re doing,” Kael said. “Do it again.” Her pulse spiked. “I can’t control it,” she said quickly. “Then try.” The command landed harder this time. Stronger. But again— the warmth inside her pushed back. Not rejecting him. But not submitting either. Kael’s eyes narrowed. He stepped closer. Too close. The bond surged violently between them. Elara gasped. The warmth inside her exploded outward. The air cracked. A sharp force rippled through the room— knocking a crate off a nearby shelf. Kael didn’t move. But his expression changed. Just slightly. Recognition. Confirmation. “There it is,” he said. Elara stumbled back, her breathing uneven. “I told you—I can’t control it!” “You will.” The certainty in his voice startled her. “Or it will control you.” The words hit harder than she expected. Because she already knew they were true. The warmth pulsed again. Stronger. Unstable. Kael felt it too. She saw it in the slight tightening of his jaw. “What are you?” he asked quietly. Elara shook her head. “I don’t know.” But for the first time— she didn’t believe she was just an omega anymore. And neither did he.
