Control and Command

906 Words
Dawn came too quickly. Elara hadn’t slept. Not truly. Every time her eyes closed, she saw it again—the silver-lit clearing, the overwhelming presence, the voice that had echoed through her very being. You are mine. The words lingered. Not as something frightening. But something… undeniable. She sat at the edge of her bed, fingers curled tightly in the fabric of her skirt, her breathing slow but controlled. The warmth inside her was still there. Steady. Present. Not wild like before. Not erratic. It felt… contained. Or at least— waiting. Waiting for her. A knock at the door broke her thoughts. Sharp. Deliberate. She didn’t need to ask who it was. She could feel him. The bond stirred instantly, tightening just slightly in her chest. “Come in,” she said quietly. The door opened. Kael stepped inside. His presence filled the small space immediately, heavy and controlled as always. But this time— Elara didn’t feel the urge to shrink. Didn’t feel the instinct to lower her gaze. She met his eyes. Directly. And for a brief moment— something shifted between them. Not dominance. Not submission. But balance. Kael noticed. Of course he did. His gaze lingered on her just a fraction longer than usual. Assessing. Adjusting. “You’re ready,” he said. It wasn’t a question. Elara stood slowly. Her heart beat faster—but not from fear. From anticipation. “I have to be.” Kael gave a slight nod. “Then come.” Training Grounds The pack was already awake. Too awake. Too aware. As Elara followed Kael toward the training grounds, she felt it immediately—the shift in attention. Conversations quieted. Eyes turned. Whispers followed. Not hidden. Not subtle. Fear didn’t stay quiet. It spread. Elara kept her gaze forward. But she felt every look. Every shift of energy. Every unspoken word. Dangerous. Unstable. Not one of us. The warmth inside her stirred slightly. Not reacting outwardly. But present. Grounding. She wasn’t alone anymore. Even if they all believed she was. Kael stopped at the center of the training grounds. A wide, open space of packed earth, surrounded by weapons racks and worn wooden posts used for sparring. Normally, it was filled with warriors. Today— it emptied. Not completely. But enough. They stayed at the edges now. Watching. Waiting. Elara stopped a few steps behind Kael. “What do I do?” she asked. Kael turned to face her. “First,” he said, “you stop reacting.” She frowned slightly. “I don’t—” “You do,” he cut in. “Every time your emotions spike, your power follows.” Elara hesitated. Because he was right. Every surge had been tied to something she felt. Fear. Anger. Pain. “So I just… stop feeling?” she asked. Kael’s gaze sharpened. “No.” He stepped closer. The bond tightened slightly—but it didn’t overwhelm her. She held her ground. “You control it,” he said. “You don’t let it control you.” The words settled between them. Simple. But not easy. “Show me,” he added. Elara swallowed. “I don’t know how.” “Then start with what you feel.” She hesitated. Then slowly— she closed her eyes. The world around her faded. The whispers. The watching eyes. The tension. And she focused inward. On the warmth. It was there immediately. Bright. Steady. Alive. Not wild. Not chaotic. Waiting. “…I feel it,” she whispered. “Good,” Kael said. “Now don’t let it move.” Elara frowned slightly. “What do you mean—” “Hold it.” Her breath steadied. She focused. Really focused. On the warmth. On keeping it where it was. Not pushing it. Not letting it spread. Just… holding it. At first, it resisted. It pulsed slightly. Testing. But she didn’t let it move. She held it. Steady. Controlled. A few seconds passed. Then more. And slowly— it settled. Not gone. Not weaker. But contained. Elara opened her eyes. “…I did it.” Kael nodded once. “Again.” She blinked. “What?” “Again.” No praise. No pause. Just expectation. Elara exhaled slowly. Then nodded. “Okay.” And this time— she didn’t hesitate. At the Edge of the Grounds Mara watched everything. Her arms crossed, her expression calm—but her eyes sharp with calculation. “Look at her,” one of the wolves beside her muttered. “She shouldn’t be here.” Mara didn’t respond immediately. She didn’t need to. Because she saw it. The way Kael stood near her. The way he watched her. The way the bond between them had shifted. And she didn’t like it. Not at all. “This isn’t just about power,” Mara said quietly. The others looked at her. “Then what is it?” Mara’s gaze darkened slightly. “…It’s about position.” Her lips curved faintly. Not into a smile. Something colder. “And I won’t let her take mine.” Back at the Center Elara stood straighter now. Her breathing steady. Her focus clear. The warmth inside her no longer felt like something foreign. It felt like something she could reach. Something she could hold. Kael watched her closely. And for the first time— he didn’t see instability. He saw potential. And that— was far more dangerous.
