Belinda’s pov
The next morning, I was so anxious. I got everything ready to go and brought along dad’s notes, a pad of paper, and a couple pencils. I wanted to be prepared. With Gavin, I checked the money in the desk drawer. There was plenty, so we took enough for all our errands today. I also found a money bag, I grabbed that to use for the payments and new orders.
We left out early, though Gavin knew where we were going. It took us about an hour to drive to the town dad’s contacts were in. They were human so we had to drive away from our pack lands. We finally made it and Gavin easily found the place dad did most of his business with. He parked and we walked in together.
I looked around and it had a little bit of everything. The store was called “The Mercantile,” but I had never heard of a*****e like that. Maybe all stores are like this, some of everything. I mentally shrugged and looked around for somebody who worked here.
“Can I help you?” A female voice rang out.
We turned towards the back of the store as a young woman came towards the front. She couldn’t be too much older than me, maybe only a year or two.
“My father has been doing business here, but has recently passed away. I’m here to deliver the last two orders and to let you know that I would like to continue to do business with you.” I could feel my nerves fluttering around my stomach.
What if she thought I wasn’t up for this or that I’m looking for an easy way to make money? Gavin put his hand on my back, silently reminding me that he is with me.
The woman smiled sadly, “You must be Deran Mayfield’s daughter? I’m so sorry. He didn’t talk much, but we knew that he had a daughter. Of course, we will continue to do business with you.” She reached out her hand out, “I’m Courtney Herrington, my father owns the store. I am learning to eventually take over for him.”
“I’m Belinda Mayfield, it’s very nice to meet you. I brought the two items from the last orders that my father brought home.”
I could feel Sarina stir in my mind, something caught her attention.
Sarina, what’s up?
I’m not sure, but she is not what she seems.
I don’t understand.
She was quiet so I let her do her thing, I didn’t sense any threat from Courtney.
She turned to Gavin, “Would you mind grabbing those items and bringing them in, I’ll settle the bill with Balinda.”
He looked at me and I nodded, “I’ll be fine.”
He glanced at Courtney again before kissing my head and walking out to the truck.
“Come back here to the counter and I’ll get your payment.” We were both quiet as she pulled money out of the cash register. She grabbed three slips for me and handed them over with the money. “When the moon goddess came to me and told me that you needed me, I did not think it would be this soon.”
“You talked to the moon goddess? What did she say? Why did she say that I would need you?”
I don’t understand.
I don’t either, Bells.
Courtney chuckled, tossing back her straight brown hair. “Slow down, we have plenty of time to talk. Your mate will be back any second. Why don’t I come visit you next week and we will talk? Here, take this necklace. Keep it on you and I’ll be able to find you.” She handed me this beautiful silver moon and chain, the moon had a small painted wolf in the middle.
I know I looked at her like she was crazy, but I heard Gavin come in with my orders. She shook her head a little so I quickly
“Thank you, Gavin.” I said as he came up to us. I quickly glanced at the new orders, “I need some items to fill these orders before we leave town.”
He nodded, then wrapped his arm around my waist. “Ready to go?”
I nodded at him and waved to Courtney.
“Until next time, Belinda.” She bowed her head to me a little and then went about her duties.
Gavin and I walked out, “That wasn’t too bad, was it?”
I grinned, “No, it wasn’t.” I pushed my conversation with Courtney away. I just want to enjoy this time with my mate. There will be time later to think about the future and what it might bring.
We found the hardware store that dad got his supplies from next. They had most of what I needed, but I had to put in an order for the rest. I’ll have to make a trip myself to come pick them up. The owner was very nice though, he had no problem continuing to do business with me. From there we went and found a*****e that was full of mattresses.
As we walked around looking at the different kinds of mattresses, I couldn’t help myself. “Why did the mercantile seem to have a little of everything, but the hardware store and this store seem to have one kind of thing.”
Gavin kissed my hand, “There really are all kinds of stores. Kitchen stores, furniture stores, food stores, hardware stores. It won’t always seem so weird, I promise. Once you’ve been to town a few times, it’ll feel a little more normal.”
