5: A LINE CROSSED

1024 Words
The air inside Lucas’s office was thick with something unspoken. Ethan’s heart pounded so hard he could feel it in his throat. Lucas’s fingers, which had barely grazed his jaw, still left a phantom sensation behind—a warning, a promise, a claim. That you belong to me now. Ethan’s breath hitched. He should push Lucas away, call him insane, demand an actual explanation instead of cryptic remarks. But instead, he sat there, trapped by the intensity in Lucas’s gaze, by the weight of those words. “I—” Ethan’s voice cracked, but before he could even form a coherent thought, a sudden sharp knock on the office door shattered the moment. Lucas’s expression didn’t falter, but something in his eyes flickered—annoyance. “Come in,” he called, but he didn’t move away from Ethan, didn’t break the tension suffocating the space between them. The door opened, and a sharply dressed woman in her early 30s stepped inside. Her presence radiated efficiency—blond hair in a sleek bun, crisp gray blazer, and eyes that immediately honed in on Ethan like he didn’t belong. “Sir,” she said, her voice professional, but her sharp gaze flicked between the two of them, lingering on their proximity. Lucas finally pulled back, moving with his usual composed grace, as if he hadn’t just said something that left Ethan’s stomach in knots. “What is it, Amanda?” Lucas asked smoothly as he adjusted the cuff of his sleeve. The woman—Amanda—didn’t let her expression slip, but Ethan could feel her assessing him, probably wondering why some nobody like him was sitting in the CEO’s private office. “There’s an issue with the investment board,” Amanda said. “They’re requesting an emergency meeting to discuss the sudden acquisition from last week.” Lucas exhaled through his nose, his jaw tightening slightly. “Of course they are.” Amanda crossed her arms. “Shall I set up a call?” Lucas glanced at Ethan. “Give me five minutes.” Amanda hesitated but gave a curt nod before stepping out of the office. The second the door shut, Ethan exhaled sharply, only now realizing how tight his chest had felt. Lucas smirked at his reaction. “Nervous?” Ethan shot him a glare. “You just said something insane, and then someone walked in like it was a normal Tuesday. What the hell do you expect me to do?” Lucas leaned back against his desk, arms crossed. “I expect you to think about my offer.” Ethan scowled. “I still don’t know what the hell you even want from me.” Lucas tilted his head, as if debating whether to elaborate. “You’ll know soon enough.” Ethan groaned, rubbing his temples. “You’re impossible.” Lucas chuckled, amused. “I’ve been told.” Ethan opened his mouth to argue, but Lucas was already straightening his posture, his composed CEO mask slipping back into place. “I have a meeting,” Lucas said, moving toward the door. “Stay here.” Ethan frowned. “What? Why?” Lucas’s smirk was unreadable. “Because I said so.” And just like that, he was gone, leaving Ethan alone in the luxurious office—and more confused than ever. --- A Glimpse into a New Life Ethan sat there for what felt like forever, his thoughts spiraling. Was he actually considering this? Lucas had thrown him off balance since the moment they met, but this was something else entirely. He wasn’t just offering a job—he was offering something bigger, something dangerous. And Ethan, despite knowing better, felt like he was being pulled in. His fingers clenched around his jeans. He needed to get out of here. Making up his mind, he pushed himself up from the chair and moved toward the door—only for it to swing open before he could reach it. Ethan nearly collided with Amanda. The woman arched a single unimpressed eyebrow. “Going somewhere?” Ethan stiffened. “Uh—bathroom?” Amanda didn’t look convinced. “Down the hall, second door on the right.” Ethan muttered a thanks before quickly slipping past her. As soon as he stepped into the hallway, he released a breath. The tension that had been suffocating him eased slightly. He walked toward the direction Amanda had pointed, but as he passed by another door, something caught his attention. The door was slightly ajar. Inside, a group of employees was gathered, whispering in hushed tones. Ethan wasn’t usually one to eavesdrop, but the name Lucas Herrera was spoken, and against his better judgment, he lingered near the door. “He’s been acting strange lately,” one voice muttered. Another scoffed. “He’s always been intense, but this? He’s distracted. You saw him today. He never ignores board meetings like that.” A third voice—this one lower, more cautious—spoke up. “You think it has something to do with that guy?” Ethan’s stomach twisted. There was a pause before someone muttered, “If he does, that’s bad news. No one gets close to Lucas Herrera unless he wants them to be there. And when he does… they don’t always come out the same.” A chill ran down Ethan’s spine. What the hell does that mean? His pulse quickened, but before he could process the weight of those words— “Enjoying yourself?” Ethan’s breath caught. He turned, his entire body freezing as he found himself face-to-face with Lucas. Shit. Lucas was standing there, his head tilted slightly, a dark glint in his eyes. Ethan hadn’t even heard him approach. For a split second, there was nothing but silence—thick, suffocating, electric. Then, in a slow, deliberate motion, Lucas reached out—and gently tugged Ethan’s tie. Ethan swallowed hard. Lucas’s voice was a whisper, but it carried weight. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Ethan.” Ethan’s throat went dry. And for the first time, he realized—he might have stepped into something far bigger than he could handle.
