Avery
I hurried back to my apartment. I was late for work. I couldn't deny it. After all these years, I still had feelings for him. He was my first love. Though, we were just friends. Best friends. He never asked me out. I watched girls flock around him. He never committed to any. They tagged him as a player in school and I was just a side girl.
"Hey, girl. You look…well like trash," Rosey said. She was my roommate and the closest thing I had to a sister. "That's me being nice."
I laughed. "That was harsh. I'm not going to lie," I replied.
"What's up with you? You didn't return last night."
I plopped on the bed next to her and heaved a tired sigh. "Yeah. You won't believe what happened?"
She bolt sat up and peered at me. If there was anything, Rosey loved. It was a good juicy gossip. "What? Tell me."
"I had a one-night stand."
She gapsed and her eyes shone. "You naughty girl." I giggled. "So tell me. How was it? How was the guy?"
"It was mind-blowing. The best s*x I have had in years. He knows how to touch a woman," I explained. Her cheeks turned pink.
"Girl, I'm jealous. You always have the best guys. Are you still with Carson though?"
My heart sank. Carson was my boyfriend. I wasn't sure what we were at this point. It wasn't entirely a relationship anymore because he claimed we were going too fast and needed space. "I feel a little guilty. I don't know if it's considered cheating. 'Cause of the break and everything?"
She placed a hand over my shoulder. "Don't worry about him. Enjoy yourself. I'm sure he's smashing another girl somewhere. You guys are taking a break. It's not cheating. It's not like you're married to him or anything."
I exhaled sharply. "I was really feeling bad about that. Plus the fact that the guy I slept with was my asshole best friend from high school. The one that changed because of money."
She arched her eyebrows. "The one you told me about?"
"Yeah. That one. It's so annoying."
"Just forget about that. What matters is that for once, you enjoyed yourself. I'm sorry I couldn't join you for your promotion celebration but at least you had plenty of fun."
I smiled. "Thanks, you're amazing." I stood to my feet. I wished I could skip work today. I was exhausted. "Gosh, I'm late for work."
"Oh. I forgot to ask. Hope you used protection. I know things like that can easily get forgotten," Rosey said.
My heart skipped and goosebumps appeared on my skin. We were drunk and we didn't use a condom. Geez, I'm screwed. I gulped. "From the look on your face, I can tell, you didn't. So, as you go to work, remember to get birth control from the pharmacy." I nodded.
I rushed to my agency. My supervisor called me into his office. "You're late, Miss Betford," he said.
"Yes sir, it was—"
"Never mind. That doesn't matter now. Though, it shouldn't repeat itself or you'll be penalized."
"Thank you, sir." I flopped the visitor's seat opposite him.
"We are ready with your next client and your details have been sent to him," he announced. It lightened up my sour mood.
"That's great news," I responded.
"Indeed. You'll be going over to his company this afternoon to hold your first interview. This is the biggest client we've ever got and we've chosen you to represent us. If you do well in managing his account, he will not only leave us a review but refer us to his other billionaire friends."
"I understand perfectly, sir." He slid a document across the table to me. I peered into it. It contained the address of the company. "All right. I'll be on my way now."
I left his office for Rockford Oil and Gas. It was a big company with a breathtaking structure. I strode to the receptionist. "Hi, I'm Avery. An account. I was sent from Privy accounting agency," I narrated.
The blonde lady at the desk beamed at me. "One second," she replied. Her fingers punched aptly on the keyboard. "Avery Betford?"
"Yes."
"Take the elevator to the last floor. The door at the extreme is the CEO's office."
"Thank you."
I took her directions and got in front of the brown door. I knocked gently. "Come in," a deep voice rumbled. My heart was pounding fast. This was my first time managing a billionaire's account. I had done lots of millionaires, so this felt a little intimidating to me.
I opened the door and my breath choked in my throat. Our eyes locked. Seated there, at the CEO's seat was Yamin. This was not happening to me. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.
"Welcome. I've been expecting you," he said plainly.
"You–knew, it was me?" I asked.
"I did. Have a seat." I waddled stiffly to take my seat. The tension in the air could be sensed from a mile away. "It's pretty awkward, right?" I remained silent. "You know. Considered we had s*x yesterday."
I didn't want to lose my job. This contract was a huge one for my agency. My boss made sure to explain that. I had to be on good terms with Yamin. No matter how uncomfortable it was. "About that. It was totally my fault. I'm sorry about that."
"Enough." I flinched. My breath became faster. What if he refuses to continue with my agency because of me? "You insulted me this morning, Avery. I could end this contract, are you aware?" I didn't reply. "But I won't. From henceforth, all we would have is a professional relationship. As you know, our friendship boat has sailed."
I gulped. This was what I wanted. Yet it hurt. A sharp pain pierced my heart. I still wanted him. I still loved him. But this was for the best. Especially for my sanity. I cleared my throat. "I understand. What happened yesterday would never happen again," I confirmed.
Just then, the door flew open. It was Carson. My boyfriend. What was he doing here? Our eyes met. "Babe?" He called.
"Carson?" I shot back.
"What're you doing here?" He asked. He pulled me up, into a hug and wrapped his hands around my waist.
"Stop," I whispered. "I'm at work."
He laughed. "Don't worry about that. My brother doesn't mind."
My breath hitched. "Your brother?" My eyes skittered to Yamin. He smirked. I couldn't believe it. Things just got complicated. I slept with his brother.
