A legacy in ashes

9:06 a.m. — Lancaster Estate, Private Hangar The jet was already warming as Damon held open the car door for Amara. She slid in without speaking. Neither of them had slept. Too much was unraveling. Too fast. “Do you think she knew?” Amara finally asked. “My mother? That her words would become… this?” Damon looked ahead, jaw clenched. “I think she knew exactly what she was risking.” “And now?” He glanced at her. “Now we risk it too.” --- 11:42 a.m. — New York Public Library Archives, Sub-Level 3 It smelled of paper and silence. The basement of the NYPL was nothing like the grand marble halls above. This was where old documents went to be forgotten — or buried. A gray-haired archivist led them past towering shelves and old storage lockers. “Box 18 is right here,” she said, tapping a low drawer. Amara reached for it, heart pounding. The box was dusty. Sealed with wax and twine. She broke it open. Inside: dozens of handwritten letters, photos, medical records… and at the very bottom — a red USB. Damon stared at it, eyes narrowing. “What is it?” she asked. He turned it over. Etched into the side, in his father’s handwriting: “Project Eclipse — Final Phase.” --- 12:18 p.m. — Damon’s Penthouse Office, Manhattan They uploaded the files in silence. Amara read quickly. Children’s names. Dosage levels. Failed trials. Handwritten notes from Felix Marrin — confirming that three subjects had died. Two were "silenced." And the last? “R.C. escaped termination — disappeared with encrypted master copy.” Riley had it. The real evidence. But what they had now… was damning enough to bury the Lancaster name. Damon’s hands trembled. “This wasn’t just cruelty,” he said. “This was systematic murder. Funded by my family. Hidden under charity foundations.” Amara looked up at him. “What do we do now?” He stared at the screen. “We burn them all.” --- 2:02 p.m. — Lancaster Estate, South Wing Back home, the air was too still. Marina greeted them at the door with a cold expression. “We caught the wrong mole,” she said flatly. “Elliot was a decoy. Someone paid him to return. To buy us time.” Damon’s eyes darkened. “Who’s the real traitor?” Marina hesitated. Then handed over a small flash drive. “Watch this.” --- 2:06 p.m. — Surveillance Room The footage was silent. A hidden camera — Amara’s balcony, three nights ago. A figure crept into frame. Slick, confident. Dressed in plain black. They pulled out a phone. Lifted it to snap a photo of Amara from behind the curtain. The face turned toward the camera. Lucien. Damon’s personal assistant. Amara’s breath caught. “No…” Damon stood still. Ice-cold. Lucien. The man who brought her water. Checked her door. Watched her like a brother might. He was the one listening. Watching. Feeding information to the outside. Marina whispered, “He’s been playing you both.” --- 2:41 p.m. — Amara’s Room On her pillow lay a single white card. Unmarked. Until she flipped it over. > Leave. Now. Or Damon dies for you. The Lancaster Estate, East Wing Study Damon stormed into the study, Marina at his side. Lucien stood waiting. Composed. Too composed. “You knew I’d find out,” Damon said coldly. Lucien didn’t flinch. “Eventually.” “Why?” Damon asked. “Why betray me? After everything I did for you?” Lucien stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “You mean everything your father did.” Damon froze. “My loyalty was never to you,” Lucien continued. “I was placed here to protect the family legacy. You, Damon, were the risk.” “Placed here by who?” Lucien finally cracked a bitter smile. “By the same man who funded Project: Eclipse… and planned its resurrection.” Amara’s breath caught as she stepped into the room. “You’re still working for him? Damon’s father is dead.” Lucien turned slowly. “No. He’s not.” --- 3:22 p.m. — Surveillance Room “He’s lying,” Marina said, typing furiously. “No,” Damon said, thinking aloud. “My father vanished weeks before his body was ‘found.’ But the DNA… it was conclusive.” “Too convenient,” Amara whispered. Marina looked up. “What if the DNA was planted?” “What if the body wasn’t his at all?” Damon asked. They all exchanged looks. Damon’s hand curled into a fist. “If my father’s alive… he’s still pulling strings. And Lucien’s his messenger.” --- 4:00 p.m. — Amara’s Room Alone, Amara paced. The message on the card still burned in her mind: > Leave. Now. Or Damon dies for you. A threat. A warning. But it felt personal. Her phone buzzed again. No caller ID. Just a single image. A woman. Thin. Weathered. Face half-covered in shadows. But the eyes… Sharp. A survivor’s eyes. The caption read: > “Riley Caine. Now you know what’s coming.” She gasped. This wasn’t a ghost. This wasn’t someone to be pitied. Riley was alive. And watching. --- 4:17 p.m. — Secret Tunnels Below the Estate Damon opened a hidden panel behind the wine cellar, revealing narrow stone steps. “I didn’t want you to see this,” he said quietly. “But if Lucien was feeding intel from inside… we need to check the vault.” The air below was thick with dust and memory. They reached the steel vault door. Damon keyed in the code. It creaked open. Inside: shelves of classified files, blueprints, and a secure terminal. But one thing was missing. The black notebook. The original ledger with names tied to Project Eclipse. “It’s gone,” Damon whispered. Amara backed up slowly. “Lucien took it.” “No,” Damon said, turning toward her. “Lucien delivered it. To whoever’s running the second phase of the program.” Amara’s voice cracked. “Riley.” 5:03 p.m. — Amara’s Room Amara sat in silence, phone clenched in her hand. The message had come in moments ago — a voice note. No name, no number. She tapped play again. > “Elise Blake was the first to fight back. But she failed. You won’t.” “If you want to understand what your mother couldn’t finish… meet me where she was last whole.” “Come alone.” The voice was soft, smoky. But layered with something darker. Resolve. Wrath. Riley. --- 5:11 p.m. — The Hall Outside Amara’s Room Damon was already waiting. “I heard the ping,” he said, stepping inside. “Was it her?” Amara nodded. “She wants to meet. But she said to come alone.” “No.” “She said it’s the only way she’ll speak.” “I said no.” Amara stepped closer, her voice low. “Damon, this is the only person left who can expose everything. She knows what your father buried. What Lucien is trying to protect. If we don’t go—” “I’ll go,” he said. “But we don’t walk into traps anymore.” She didn’t argue. Because she knew something Damon didn’t yet. Riley hadn’t sounded like a victim. She’d sounded like a warning. --- 6:22 p.m. — Lancaster Corp Legal Bunker, Manhattan Damon uploaded the final decrypted folder from the red USB. Dozens of names. Payment trails. Medical photos. Dates. All under his father’s private subsidiaries. Amara watched as the files loaded onto the encrypted server. “Once this goes public,” she said, “there’s no turning back.” “I know.” “Your board will collapse. Your name… might never recover.” He looked up at her. “I don’t want to recover what I didn’t deserve to carry.” Then he pressed the upload key. The countdown began. Twelve minutes until global release. --- 6:34 p.m. — Marina’s Command Room Suddenly — black screens. Every terminal. Dead. “What the hell—?” Marina swore, ripping off her headset. A siren began to wail. A red light blinked on-screen. “SYSTEM COMPROMISED — FILES INTERCEPTED.” The upload had been hacked. Amara turned to Damon, eyes wide. “She was already in the system.” --- 6:36 p.m. — Damon’s Office Damon slammed a fist into the desk. “Lucien.” “No,” Marina said, pulling up a backup feed. “This wasn’t him.” She typed rapidly. The location of the breach pinged on the map. Not internal. Mobile. “Whoever hijacked the files… did it from outside. In motion. On foot.” She zoomed in. A figure walked through Central Park. Hood up. Phone in hand. Face blurred. But there was no mistaking the small pendant around the neck. Elise Blake’s. Amara whispered, “She has my mother’s necklace.” --- 6:42 p.m. — Surveillance Screenshot Damon held up the image. “Riley,” he said. Amara nodded. “She’s not running anymore,” she murmured. “She’s leading us somewhere.” Damon’s eyes narrowed. “Then we follow.” 7:06 p.m. — Lancaster Estate, Safe Room The atmosphere was tense. Damon, Amara, and Marina stood around the central table. Riley’s message played again on loop — then her demands. > “Bring no one. No surveillance. Just Amara. And her mother’s necklace.” > “If Damon shows up, I disappear forever.” “She’s unhinged,” Damon muttered. “No,” Amara said quietly. “She’s afraid. And she doesn’t trust anyone carrying the Lancaster name.” Damon looked at her, pain flickering behind his cold mask. “I don’t want to lose you.” “You won’t,” she said. “Unless we do nothing.” --- 7:20 p.m. — The Vault Room Marina handed Amara a sealed envelope. “This arrived by courier an hour ago,” she said, voice tight. “No return name. Hand-delivered. Meant for you.” Amara frowned. “From who?” Marina hesitated. “Someone who used your mother’s passphrase at the door.” She opened the envelope. Inside was a torn page from Elise’s journal. Amara recognized the handwriting immediately. > If you’re reading this, it means you’ve met the girl with the fire. Protect her, Amara. She has what I never could carry — the truth, and the rage to use it. But know this: the people you think are on your side are not always yours. Riley knows that too well. When the past comes for you, don’t run. Let it burn. Amara looked up. “I think my mother wanted this all along. For Riley and me to finish it.” --- 7:53 p.m. — Estate Gardens Damon stood alone at the balcony, watching the city lights flicker to life beyond the trees. Lucien’s betrayal still stung. But deeper than that — was doubt. His father might still be alive. His company might fall. The woman he was falling for might die in his arms trying to clean up the blood he’d been born into. He heard footsteps. Marina stepped beside him. “There’s something you should know,” she said. He turned. “I ran the birth records again. Your father's private files. You have… a sibling.” Damon’s brow furrowed. “I don’t.” “Yes,” Marina said. “You do.” She handed him a paper. And there it was. Two names. Damon Lancaster Subject R.C. He stared at her. “No…” Marina nodded slowly. “Riley Caine is your half-sister.” ---
