CHAPTER 20 Plans Drawn in Shadow

1869 Words
The lamp burns low on my bedside table, casting soft gold over the open sketchbook still resting in my lap — the attacker’s face turned face‑down now, covered by the fresh drawing I made: four broad, solid shapes standing back‑to‑back, forming a wall around one smaller, steady figure with a hand resting over her belly. I trace the lines slow with my thumb, breath finally slowing to something calm and even, but my mind never stops turning — sharp, alert, piecing together everything I’ve learned since I put pencil to paper hours ago. They know him. Mateo recognised him instantly. Declan’s face shifted — that cold, deadly flash of recognition — the second he saw the scar slashing through the left eyebrow. That means he isn’t just some random stranger. He’s tied to this world. To the business. To the names and shadows and debts that wrapped around my life before I even knew they existed. And that means… he might know us. I slide out of bed quiet, bare feet touching the soft rug, and pad silently over to the connecting door — solid wood, locked tight, bolted from my side — rest my palm flat against the cool surface. Through it, faint but steady, I can feel the weight of Declan’s presence right there on the other side. He hasn’t left. He hasn’t rested. He’s been standing guard just a few inches away, pacing or waiting or burning with every kind of rage and worry he can’t let loose — and I know exactly why. He promised he’d hunt this man down. He promised he’d end it. But now that he knows who it is… he also knows how close the danger really is. Down the hall, I hear low, rumbling voices — quiet, controlled, urgent — drifting faint through the heavy wood. Declan’s rough, clipped tone cuts through first, sharp and hard as steel. Then Mateo — deep, low, speaking short, heavy sentences, his voice rough and unused, carrying weight and certainty every word. Then Elias — calm, precise, measured, like he’s laying out facts, names, connections, mapping every thread. And finally Silas — loud, gruff, ready to tear something apart, impatient and fierce. I press my ear soft against the doorframe, catching fragments — … worked for the Westside crew… old ties… owed money… knew your father’s debts… — and my blood runs cold, then hot, then steady and sharp. He knew Dad. He knew the debts. He knew exactly where to find me… I step back slow, heart firm and strong, hand resting protective over my bump. It wasn’t random. It wasn’t just bad luck. It was planned. Calculated. And that means… he might still be watching. Outside in the hall, Declan’s voice drops lower, deadly quiet — absolute, final, terrifying in its calm. “… and if he thinks he can come here, touch what is mine, and walk away breathing? He’s already dead. He just doesn’t know it yet. We map every route, every safe house, every contact he’s ever had. We close every exit. And when we find him — I want him alive long enough to understand exactly who he dared to hurt. Then we end it. Permanently.” Mateo answers next — short, heavy, unshakable — his voice carrying that same quiet promise he gave me in my room earlier. “I know his habits. I know where he drinks, where he sleeps, who he pays. I will lead the team. No mistakes. No witnesses. He never gets close enough to see her again.” Then Elias — smooth, thoughtful, already seeing the bigger picture. “He didn’t just hurt her — he used her as leverage. He knew who her father was. He knew we’d come looking. This was never just violence — it was a message. And we have to make sure we send one back so loud no one ever dares touch her or that child ever again. But we move careful. We don’t rush. We don’t leave gaps. Because if he slips… he will come for her. And we cannot let that happen.” Silas’s voice booms low and rough, full of unchained fury and loyalty. “Let me be the one to find him. Let me be the one to break him. She’s family now — and nobody hurts family and walks away. I’ll tear the whole damn city apart brick by brick if I have to. Just give me the word.” Silence falls for a long moment — heavy, thick, loaded with purpose — before Declan speaks again, softer this time, lower, raw with something that sounds like fear wrapped tight in iron. “None of you go near him before I know exactly where he is — exactly how close he’s been. Because every second we spend hunting him… he could already be hunting her. And I will not — will not — lose her. Not now. Not when I’ve only just found her. Not when she’s finally starting to trust me enough to stay.” I lean back against the wall, eyes closing slow, letting the weight of those words settle deep in my chest. Trust. That’s the word, isn’t it? Everything comes back to that. I don’t trust easy. I don’t trust fast. But right now — listening to them plan, listening to them fight to keep me safe, listening to Declan sound terrified at the thought of losing me — I feel something shift inside me. Not surrender. Not weakness. Just… recognition. I walk back to the desk, sit down, and pick up my charcoal again — start drawing fresh lines, fast and sure — maps, routes, faces, patterns, everything I remember from that night, everything I’ve seen since I arrived here, every small detail I’ve stored away just in case I ever needed it. I don’t wait for them to save me. I don’t sit helpless waiting to be rescued. I add what I know. I become part of the plan. Because this is my fight too. This is my safety. This is my child. And I don’t let anyone fight my battles for me without giving them every weapon I can. Minutes later, soft footsteps approach my door — slow, careful, no sudden movements — and a low, gentle knock raps twice. “Lila? You awake?” Declan’s voice — quiet, careful, gentle, nothing like the commanding tone he uses with the others. “Can I come in? Please? I won’t cross any line you don’t want crossed. I just… I need to know you’re alright.” I stand up, straighten my shoulders, and walk to the door — unlock it slow, pull it open just wide enough to see him — and there he is: hair messy, shirt unbuttoned at the collar, eyes dark and tired and burning with worry, hands loose at his sides like he’s terrified to reach for me but dying to hold me close. He steps inside slow, only as far as I let him, and his gaze drops instantly to the sketchbook open on the desk — seeing the new pages, the maps, the notes, the details I’ve added — and his expression softens, awed and proud and utterly captivated. “You’re incredible,” he breathes, stepping closer but stopping when I don’t move back, keeping his distance exactly where I’ve drawn the line. “While we were planning… you were building us a better map. You were remembering everything. You’re not just waiting safe inside these walls — you’re outthinking us all. You never cease to amaze me, Lila Maeve. Never.” “It’s my life,” I answer steady, clear, firm, meeting his gaze straight on. “My past. My danger. My future. I don’t stand back and let men handle things for me — not ever. I help. I know things. I see things. And you use everything I’ve got, Declan — every bit of it — or you don’t keep me safe at all. Because I’m not a prize to guard. I’m a partner in this whether you like it or not.” Declan stares at me — wide‑eyed, stunned, utterly smitten — then nods slow, deep and sincere, no argument, no protest, no stubborn pride getting in the way. “Partner,” he repeats quiet, like he’s testing the word, letting it sink in, liking the weight of it more than any title he’s ever held. “Yes. You are exactly that. Equal. Sharp. Strong. And the most important thing in this whole damn world to me. I’ll use everything you give me. I’ll listen to every word you say. I’ll move exactly how you tell me to — as long as I know you’re safe. As long as I know you and our baby come first.” He steps a little closer, voice dropping warm and soft, earnest and raw. “And Lila… what you drew today — that face, that scar, everything you remembered — you gave us the key to end this. You gave us everything we needed to find him, stop him, and make sure he never harms anyone ever again. You didn’t just help… you led the way. And I will spend the rest of my life thanking you for being brave enough to show me.” He reaches out slow, careful, and brushes the back of his fingers soft against my cheek — light as air, no pressure, no claim — just pure, tender affection. “Rest now, my brave girl. We have the name. We have the face. We have every piece of the puzzle. Now we just need to finish it. And I promise you — before long… that shadow will be gone forever. And you’ll be free. Truly free.” I lean into his touch just a fraction — barely there, but enough — and watch his eyes light up bright and warm, like I just handed him the sun. “Make sure you do,” I say, sharp and steady, but smiling soft around the edges. “Because I’m not stopping until I am. And neither should you.” Declan nods once — fierce, devoted, ready to burn the world down if that’s what it takes — then steps back toward the door, pausing with his hand on the frame, turning back to look at me one last time. “Sleep well. Mateo is watching the perimeter. Silas is checking every safe house. Elias is tracing every connection. And I… I stay right here. Right outside your door. Nothing gets past us. Nothing gets near you. Ever again.” He slips out, closing the door gentle behind him — and I hear the soft, steady thud of his back leaning against the wood, settling in for the night, right where he promised he’d be. I turn back to my desk, close my sketchbook, and lay my hand firm and warm over my bump — calm, sure, ready. Plans are drawn. Shadows are named. And for the first time in a very long time… I know exactly who I’m fighting with — and exactly who I’m fighting against.
