CHAPTER 7 Strength They Didn’t Expect

2301 Words
The air in the room hums thick and heavy, every gaze locked on me like I’m some rare, dangerous thing they’ve caged and can’t quite figure out. I lean back into the leather sofa, legs crossed slow and easy, sketchbook resting safe on my lap, chin tilted up just enough to let every single one of them know — loud and clear — I’m not shrinking, I’m not trembling, I’m not breaking. Never have been. Never will be. Declan stays right where he is, planted between me and the others like a human wall, broad shoulders tense, hands clenched loose at his sides, that constant dark storm swirling behind his eyes. Every few seconds his glance drifts down to my stomach — sharp, hot, furious, tangled up with something he refuses to name. He hates this. Hates that I’m here, hates that I’m carrying this secret weight, hates that every step he takes now is tied to a debt he didn’t make and a girl he never asked for… and yet he stands between me and the rest of them like he’d burn the world down before anyone touched what he claims is his. “Rules again, just so you don’t pretend you missed them,” he growls, voice low and rough, vibrating through the whole room. “You stay within the main house or the walled grounds. No wandering off alone. No talking to strangers. No hiding anything from me — every appointment, every ache, every change… I get told first. That baby isn’t just yours anymore. It’s tangled up in this family, this business, everything I built. You think you walked away from your past? You just walked straight into a new one — and you don’t get to keep the best parts all to yourself.” I huff a quiet, sharp laugh, fingers brushing the worn edge of my sketchbook — my shield, my language, my only place where I’m fully free. “Funny how you say that like it’s a fact. You can say it a thousand times, Declan. You can lock every door, post guards at every turn, shout your ownership until your throat goes raw… but you don’t own what’s inside me. You don’t own the choices I make. And you sure as hell don’t own this child. This baby grew from my body, survived my hardest days, was protected by me when nobody else was there. You only showed up because a piece of paper said you were owed something. Don’t act like you’ve got rights where you’ve never earned them.” He steps closer, looming over me, heat rolling off him in waves, knuckles brushing the back of the sofa right beside my shoulder — close enough to touch, close enough to take, but stopping just short. “Earned them?” His voice drops to a dangerous, thrumming rumble. “I’ll earn every damn thing I want. I’ll earn your trust, your obedience, your loyalty — and I’ll do it whether you fight me every step or not. Because right now? You’re mine to keep. And I keep what’s mine. Hard. Tight. Forever.” From the side of the room, Elias shifts forward, leaning his hip against the heavy oak table, hands folded loosely in front of him, that calm, razor-sharp focus never wavering from my face. He watches every flicker of my expression, every way I hold myself steady, every time my hand drifts unconsciously to rest over my bump — gentle, instinctive, fierce. “You know,” he says softly, thoughtful, like he’s working through the puzzle piece by piece out loud, “what strikes me most? You don’t just pretend you’re fine. You believe it. You’ve turned surviving into an art form. Every place you lived, every door you walked through, every person who ever let you down or hurt you — you took every bit of it and forged it into armour. And now?” His gaze softens, flicking briefly to where my hand rests, then back to my eyes, warm and knowing and utterly unthreatened. “Now you’re building armour for two. That baby didn’t just land in your life — it became your reason to be even stronger. You didn’t tell anyone, didn’t ask for help, didn’t lean on anyone… because you’ve learned: if you rely on nobody, nobody can ever let you down. Am I right?” For half a heartbeat my breath catches — just a fraction — and I hate that he sees it. Hate that he’s that close, that observant, that good at peeling back layers I’ve spent years cementing shut. But my face stays smooth, cool, sharp as I lift one shoulder in a careless shrug. “Clever guess. Still just a guess. You think you’ve got me mapped out, Elias? You think you know every reason I breathe the way I do? You’ve barely scratched the surface. And you’ll find — just like everyone else — that the deeper you dig, the thicker the walls get.” He smiles then — quiet, pleased, like I’ve just given him exactly the answer he wanted. “I don’t mind digging. I’ve got patience. And I’ve got time. You’re here now, Lila. You’re not going anywhere. And eventually… every wall has a crack. Every secret has a voice.” Before I can reply, heavy boots thud hard against the floorboards and Silas pushes off the mantelpiece, stalking right across the room until he’s standing right beside the sofa, towering over me, broad arms crossed tight over his chest, scarred knuckles white with pressure. His eyes burn — bright, hungry, rough — raking over me from head to toe like he’s already calculating exactly how much weight I can carry before I snap, exactly where my limits lie. “Dig all you want, Elias,” he barks, loud and rough, voice thick with that mix of doubt and dark fascination he can’t hide. “Waste your time playing riddles. I see exactly what she is. Tough words, sharp tongue, all that brave posturing… but it’s all one big act. You think I don’t see it? You think I don’t feel it? She’s carrying a child she conceived through violence — don’t think I haven’t worked that out — she’s been passed around the system her whole life, hurt over and over again… and now she’s stuck in a house full of men who could crush her without trying. She’s running on pure stubbornness and fear. And fear runs out. Strength runs out. And when that baby starts growing bigger, heavier, pulling at her body and her energy and her heart? That’s when it breaks her. That’s when the fire burns out. And I’m gonna be there — every single day — watching. Waiting. And when she finally falls apart? I’m gonna be the first one to see every single piece of her.” He leans down, face close to mine, breath smelling of smoke and heat, smirk sharp and cruel and fascinated all at once. “Go on then, princess. Keep talking big. Keep acting like you’re invincible. But remember — you’re only human. And you’re already carrying the heaviest load there is. Sooner or later… you will break.” I don’t lean back. I don’t flinch. I tilt my head up until our noses are almost touching, smile sweet, sharp, deadly — and speak slow and clear and steady right into his face. “You’ve been waiting for me to break since the second you saw me. And you know what, Silas? You’re gonna wait forever. Because I didn’t survive care homes, neglect, betrayal, and being assaulted and left pregnant and alone just to crumble because you stand there and hope I do. You think this baby is my weakness? You think carrying him or her makes me fragile? It’s my strength. It’s my fuel. Every day I get stronger, braver, sharper. Every day you’re still here — still waiting — and I’m still standing tall. And you know what’s really funny?” I lean in closer, voice dropping soft and icy. “You’re so obsessed with watching me fall… I think you’re actually terrified I’m gonna be the one who outlasts you.” Silas freezes. His smirk vanishes. His eyes widen — just for a split second — shock and something darker, deeper, snapping through him like a live wire. Then his jaw clenches hard, muscles jumping in his cheeks, and he straightens up slow, glaring down at me with a look that says: Game on. You’ve got yourself a fight. He steps back, hands balling into fists at his sides, but he doesn’t speak. Doesn’t shout. Doesn’t threaten. Just stares — hard, hungry, challenged — like I’ve just rewritten every single thing he thought he knew. And then there’s Mateo. As always, he’s stayed quiet, unmoving, planted near the doorway like a silent sentinel — huge, steady, unreadable. But his eyes… they never left me. Not once. Not when Declan roared, not when Elias picked me apart, not when Silas snarled and threatened and tried to wear me down. He watched every second of it — how I stood my ground, how I didn’t back down an inch, how I met every single challenge thrown my way with fire and spine and unbroken will. He saw the way I protected my bump without hesitation, the way I never let anyone see fear, the way I fight like my life depends on it — because it does. Slowly, deliberately, while everyone else is still caught up in tension and anger and pride, he steps forward. No sound. No hurry. He stops a few feet away — close enough to be seen, far enough not to crowd me — and lifts one large, scarred hand. First he taps twice over his own heart — I feel it. I see you. Then he points straight at me, firm and steady — You are not broken. Then he taps his temple — And you are smarter than all of them. And finally — slow, careful, like he’s making sure only I see it — he tilts his head just slightly, and gives me the faintest, smallest, most respectful nod I’ve ever seen. I’m not here to break you. I’m here to watch you win. My breath catches soft in my chest — quiet, private, mine. Out of all four of them, he’s the only one who gets it. The only one who looks at me and sees me — not a debt, not a puzzle, not something to shatter, not something to own — just a girl who’s been through hell and kept going. And he doesn’t say a word. He never does. But his silence speaks louder than every shout and threat and clever line I’ve heard since I walked through these doors. Declan notices the look between us instantly — his jaw tightens, his eyes darken to black storm clouds, and he steps fully in front of me again, blocking me from Mateo’s view, from everyone’s view, claiming every inch of my space with his presence alone. He leans down close, face twisted up with that familiar mix of rage, jealousy, and a terrible, hungry kind of care he refuses to admit exists. “Eyes on me, Lila,” he orders, rough and commanding, fingers brushing light but burning hot against my jawline. “You look at me. You answer to me. You remember who you belong to. And don’t you dare think anyone else here — anyone — gets to see you the way I do. You’re mine. Every sharp word, every brave stance, every secret you keep… mine. And I don’t share what’s mine.” I lift my chin, stare straight into his furious, burning eyes, and smile — fierce, unbowed, unbroken. “You can try to keep me all to yourself, Declan. You can block every view, lock every door, shout your claim from every wall… but you still haven’t realised the truth. You own the debt. You own the papers. You own the walls I sleep within. But me?” I tap my own chest right over my heart — firm, clear, final. “Me? I belong to no one. And I never will.” Declan’s expression shifts — fury warring with something far deeper, far more dangerous, something he can’t fight off forever — and for a second I swear he’s going to kiss me, or shake me, or carry me off and lock me away tighter than ever. But he just growls low in his throat, turns sharp on his heel, and barks out orders to the room — loud, sharp, absolute — while his eyes never leave me, not even for a heartbeat. “She stays close. She eats well. She rests. No one pushes her too far — and no one gets too close. She’s Vance property now… and she’s off-limits. Understood?” Silas glares — annoyed, hungry, challenged — but nods sharp and slow. Elias smiles, calm and knowing, already planning his next move. And Mateo… he just stands quiet, steady, watching me from the shadows, his eyes saying everything his voice never will. I lean back in the sofa, hand resting warm and safe over my stomach, and breathe easy. Let them think what they want. Let them fight over who owns me, who solves me, who breaks me, who watches me. They can shout rules and build walls and make plans all day long. They still don’t know who I really am. They still don’t know I’ve already won the hardest battle there is — learning how to survive. And as long as I’ve got this little life inside me, and this fire in my chest? I’m unbreakable. Unstoppable. And entirely, completely… mine.
