CHAPTER 21 Silas Chooses His Side

1532 Words
Morning light bleeds pale gold through my curtains, soft and slow, but I’m already awake — sitting up, sketchbook open, fingers tracing fresh lines — when heavy footsteps thunder down the hall, loud and unapologetic, the kind only Silas ever makes. The door rattles once — firm, not rude — before his voice booms through the wood, rough and warm and loud enough to rattle the frame. “Lila? You decent? Got stuff to show ya — and things I gotta say, and I ain’t waiting till later to say ’em!” I swing my legs over the bed, stand straight and steady, and walk over to unlock it — pulling it wide before he can knock again. He fills the whole doorway instantly: broad shoulders, thick arms, scarred knuckles, dark hair messy, face set hard — but the second his eyes land on me, that fierce, ready‑for‑war scowl softens, shifts into something open, honest, loyal. He carries a thick stack of folders, photos, and papers tucked tight under one arm, and drops them heavy onto the small table inside my room — careful not to slam, careful not to scare — before he leans back, crosses his arms wide over his chest, and looks me up and down slow, serious, like he’s checking every inch to make sure I’m still whole, still strong, still me. “Spent the whole night digging,” he rumbles, gruff and straightforward, no fancy words, no smooth lines — just plain truth, rough and solid as stone. “Every file, every record, every dirty little secret we’ve got on the streets. That face you drew? That scar? Name’s Kael Rainer. Works — worked — for the crew your dad owed. Debt collector. Enforcer. Known for leaving marks… and leaving girls alone and broken when he’s done. Turns out… he was the one sent to find you. To take payment since your old man vanished. And he took what he thought he was owed, didn’t he? Took it all — and left you carrying it alone.” My breath catches sharp, but I don’t flinch. I don’t look away. I just lift my chin, hand resting firm over my bump, voice steady and clear. “Kael Rainer. Finally got a name to go with the face. Good. Names are easier to hunt than ghosts.” Silas blinks — surprised, impressed, proud — and nods sharp and hard, a rough, lopsided grin tugging at his mouth. “Damn right they are. And you… you don’t even blink, do ya? Most women — hell, most grown men — would’ve folded hearing that name. You? You look like you’re already planning how to take him down yourself. I knew you were tough — I didn’t know you were made of iron.” He leans forward then, tone shifting — dropping lower, heavier, stripped of every bit of his usual teasing or roughness, leaving only raw, blunt honesty. “Now here’s what I came here to say — and I want you to hear every word, because I don’t say things I don’t mean. When you first turned up? I looked at you and saw exactly what everyone else did: debt. Collateral. Something fragile, something soft, something that’d break the second things got hard. I figured you’d need watching, guarding, keeping safe — like you were something to be kept, not something to be seen.” He pauses, jaw tightening, like he’s admitting something he’s never had to say out loud before. “Then I watched you. I watched you stand up to Declan — the most feared man in this city — and tell him exactly where he could go. I watched you fight sickness, fear, and three months of hell all by yourself, never begging, never breaking, never asking for pity. I watched you draw the man who hurt you — clear as day — and hand it over like you were handing us a weapon instead of a memory. And I realised… I had it all wrong. You aren’t something to protect, Lila. You’re someone to fight beside. You’re sharp, you’re brave, you’re tougher than every single one of us put together — and you deserve every bit of respect we’ve got.” Silas drops his arms, steps closer — not crowding, just close enough I feel the weight of his promise — and rests one huge, scarred hand gentle, reverent, over the edge of the table between us, eyes burning bright and fierce and true. “So I’m telling you now — officially, finally, and forever — I choose you. Not Declan’s orders. Not Elias’s plans. Not what the family says I gotta do. You. I’m your man. Your shield. Your fist. If anyone comes for you — Kael, enemies, anyone — they go through me first. If you need something found, something moved, something broken… you call me. You don’t ask permission. You don’t wait for approval. You tell me — and it’s done. I don’t care about debts anymore. I don’t care about deals. I care about you. And that baby you’re carrying — that’s family now. And family? We burn the world down to keep safe.” He taps his own chest hard — right over his heart — then points straight at me, clear and absolute. “You’ve got my loyalty. My strength. My life — if you need it. No strings. No fine print. Just… yours.” My throat tightens — warm, thick, overwhelmed — and for the first time since I stepped foot in this house, I don’t have to fight to keep my guard up against them. Silas — the brute, the enforcer, the man who once looked at me like I was something to test or break — has just handed me his loyalty like it’s the most natural thing in the world. And I know… he means every single word. “Thank you,” I say, soft but strong, meeting his gaze straight on, no tears, no weakness — just sincere, honest gratitude. “I’ve never had anyone choose me before. Not really. Not just… me. Not without a price tag or a condition attached. But I hear you, Silas. And I accept it. But remember what I told Declan — you earn every bit of it. And I’ll expect you to stand beside me… not just in front of me. I fight too. Don’t you ever forget that.” Silas lets out a loud, rough bark of laughter — bright, genuine, proud — and nods so hard his hair falls over his eyes. “Oh, I ain’t ever gonna forget that, Lila Maeve. Not for a single second. You’re the toughest thing I’ve ever met — and I’m damn lucky you let me stand anywhere near your side.” He gestures to the files spread across the table — photos, addresses, contacts, routes — everything he dug up through the night. “Everything I found is here. Every place he sleeps, every bar he drinks in, every name he’s tied to. Declan’s got copies, Elias is cross‑checking every detail, and Mateo’s already out on the streets marking his usual haunts. But I wanted you to see it first. Because this is your justice. Your safety. Your closure. And you deserve to know every single thing we know.” I lean forward, fingers brushing over the top photo — grainy, black‑and‑white, Kael Rainer’s face clear, that thick scar slicing through his eyebrow exactly like I drew it — and my expression hardens, sharp and steady and fierce. “Good. Now we know where he is. Now we know how he moves. Now we stop waiting for him to come to us… and we make sure he never gets the chance to come anywhere near us ever again.” Silas watches me — eyes bright, impressed, absolutely devoted — and grins wide, wild and dangerous and proud. “That’s exactly what I was thinking. And whatever you decide… whatever you want done… you say the word. And I’ll do it. No questions. No hesitation. Just — done.” He turns to leave, pauses in the doorway, and looks back — serious, steady, true — one last time. “You’re not collateral anymore, Lila. You’re not debt. You’re family. And Vance family? We don’t let anyone hurt ours and walk away.” Then he’s gone — heavy footsteps fading down the hall — leaving me alone with the files, the truth, and a heart that feels lighter, stronger, safer than it has in years. I sit down, spread every page out neat and organised, and start sorting, marking, connecting — adding my own notes, my own memories, my own observations — building the picture sharper, clearer, stronger. Silas chose me. Elias sees me. Mateo guards me. Declan loves me. And now… we have a name. We have a face. We have a plan. I rest my hand over my bump, smiling fierce and bright to myself. “See, little one? We aren’t just surviving anymore. We’re winning. And nobody — nobody — gets to take that away from us.”
