Chapter 1 September 1865 The “Real Dutchman” Fact: His name was Jacob Waltz. He was born in Germany about 1810 to a German miner father. Jacob learned his father's trade at a very early age, and soon became a prospector. Having heard many stories about vast deposits of gold in America, he knew he had to travel to America and search for his fortune. He immigrated to America and the first actual record of him being in the United States is an affidavit filed in 1848. Jacob Waltz declared himself to be 38 years old, stating he had been born in Wurttemberg, Germany. Those that knew him started referring to him as “The Dutchman”.
