📖 Chapter 5: Shadows of the Past > The wind howled through the trees, carrying a scent I hadn't smelled in weeks—but I could never forget it. Dark Moon wolves. My heart didn’t tremble with fear anymore. It burned with purpose. --- We spotted them before they saw us—three of them, moving silently through the outer edge of rogue territory. They wore no symbols, no marks, but their posture gave them away. They moved like soldiers. Arrogant. Controlled. “Why would they come this far into rogue land?” Nova whispered beside me. “They’re not hunting,” Ryker muttered. “They’re searching.” “For me,” I said. He nodded. “Most likely.” I should’ve felt afraid. Exposed. But I didn’t. Something inside me had shifted. I was no longer prey. I was something else now. “We let them pass?” Nova asked. Ryker’s gaze turned to me. “That depends. Are you ready?” I met his eyes. “Let me talk to them.” He gave the slightest nod. “Nova, circle behind. Shadow formation.” “Yes, Alpha.” “And you,” he said to me. “Speak with strength. Don’t show your scars.” --- I stepped into the clearing, cloak wrapped around me. The three wolves stiffened, catching my scent too late to run. “Who are you?” one of them barked, stepping forward. He was tall, bulky—Delta rank, I guessed. I lifted my chin. “Aurora Blake.” Their eyes widened. “The rejected mate?” another whispered. “Impossible. Alpha Kade said she fled into the wilds. That she was probably dead.” I smiled coldly. “Clearly, Alpha Kade was wrong. Again.” The Delta stiffened. “He’s looking for you. You’re to return at once.” I arched a brow. “He demands I return, after throwing me away like trash?” “He regrets the decision,” the Delta growled. “There are
complications. The pack is unstable. He needs you.” “Needs me?” I echoed. “Funny. He didn’t need me when I begged him to give me a chance.” Another wolf stepped forward. He was younger, quieter. “The Luna he chose instead
she betrayed him.” I felt nothing. No joy. No pity. Only silence. “And now,” the Delta continued, “he wishes to make things right.” I laughed softly. “Tell him I’m no longer his to summon. I’m not a Luna anymore.” The Delta stepped forward threateningly. “You’ll come back whether you like it or not. The Alpha has ordered—” A growl ripped through the trees behind them. Nova appeared first, her blade gleaming at the Delta’s throat. Ryker stepped from the shadows behind her, eyes like molten gold. “Do you threaten my wolves?” The three scouts froze. One of them took a panicked step back. “Rogue filth,” the Delta hissed. “You’re protecting her? You’ll regret that.” Ryker didn’t flinch. “You entered Bloodbane land without permission. You gave an ultimatum to someone under my protection. Do you understand what that means?” The Delta sneered. “It means nothing. You’re rogues. You’re nothing.” Ryker smiled darkly. “Then let me show you what ‘nothing’ looks like.” Before the scout could speak again, Ryker moved. In one flash of movement, the Delta was on his knees, blood at the edge of his lip, blade to his throat. “Go back to your Alpha,” Ryker snarled. “And tell him this—Aurora Blake is no longer his mate. She is no longer his problem. And if he comes for her again... he will become mine.” The other two wolves scrambled to help their wounded Delta. They shifted and vanished into the trees. --- > Silence returned. I stood in the clearing, breath shaking. But not from fear. From adrenaline. From the knowledge that something irreversible had just happened. I had faced them. And I hadn’t bowed. --- “Are you okay?” Nova asked as she came to my side. “I’m fine,” I said quietly. “Just
processing.” Ryker’s gaze found mine. “You handled that well.” “Even when I was shaking inside?” “Courage,” he said, “is not the absence of fear. It’s the choice to rise anyway.” I swallowed hard. “Then I guess I’m braver than I thought.” --- 🌑 Later That Night I stood at the edge of the cliff again, staring out into the stars. Kade had chosen another. She betrayed him. And now he wanted me back. But I wasn’t the girl he rejected anymore. I was something far more dangerous. And for the first time
I felt it stir. Power. I looked down at my hands. They glowed faintly—silver threads dancing across my skin like moonlight. Lira stirred inside me. “The Moon Goddess didn’t make a mistake, Aurora.” “She made a storm.”
