The Matchmaker

Stewart Gordan understood what he was saying quickly, and his expression froze for a moment, but he snapped out of it quickly. “She just came back from overseas, so I think she’s still adapting to jetlag. Since you’re here today, Theodore, why don’t you stay for a meal?” He then called the housekeeper, Aunt Fay over. “Quickly go get some additional groceries, Nat and Theodore are going to have their meal here today.” Stewart Gordan took out a few notes and handed it to Aunt Fay. Aunt Fay had been working in the Gordon house for years, so she knew what Stewart was thinking. She glanced at him before taking the money and left. “Yes, sir. Enjoy your chat with Mr. Moore and the little miss.” Natalie looked at Theodore while her grandfather was talking to Aunt Fay. She couldn’t understand how Theodore Moore would know Stewart Gordan. On the other hand, Theodore smiled at her. “You seem surprised to see me, Ms. Smith.” “Of course I am. Aren’t you? Are you really my grandpa’s student?” Natalie couldn’t believe it, for Theodore Moore was no ordinary person. Theodore arched his eyebrow, but he did not answer her. “Do you think both of us would lie to you? There is no need for that.” Theodore replied. Natalie stiffened, wanting to retort, but she was out of any comebacks. Stewart Gordan’s eyes gleamed, then his gaze shifted between Theodore and Natalie. “She’s the girl I’ve been talking to you about, Theo. My granddaughter has been a great student, and now she’s a director in her company.” Stewart Gordan praised his granddaughter to high heavens, and Theodore agreed. Whenever Theodore glanced at her, Natalie could feel her skin prickle. “Alright, you guys talk, I need to look at something in my study for a while.” Stewart patted Natalie’s hand. “He’s our guest, Natalie, so be a good host to him for me.” Stewart left before Natalie could refuse. She wanted to follow him, but after she glanced at the unmoving Theodore, she reluctantly sat down. “I’ve never heard my grandfather talk about you, Mr. Moore. When did you become his student?” Theodore squinted his eyes, observing her with a small smile. “Is that so? But Mr. Gordon always talks about you.” Theodore replied. Suddenly he stood up, surprising her. Natalie scrambled backward in shock until her back clashed with the armrest of the Sofa. “Stay away from me!” She told him angrily. “I thought you said you don’t know me, Ms. Smith. We should sit closer and get to know each other quicker, no?” Theodore smiled. “We shouldn’t let Mr. Gordon down, you know.” He moved closer, entrapping her between his tall body and the sofa before whispering in her ear. “Why you…” Natalie blushed, wanting to push him away. Now she knew why her grandfather called her back. She would be an i***t if she didn’t get the message by now. However, she didn’t expect her grandfather to be in such a hurry. She only had a breakup a few days ago, but that didn’t mean she was unwanted. Also, of all the men he could have found for me, he just had to get Theodore Moore. She had just refused his advances yesterday, but here her grandfather was already trying to match them. She looked up into his eyes and said “Don’t take this the wrong way. My grandfather’s just doing this for fun. He’s bored, you see. So, don’t take it too seriously.” It’s only a breakup. Besides, I’m still young, so men will come in droves. Since Theodore was still too close for comfort Natalie felt suffocated. She gulped before saying “Don’t you think it’s difficult to breathe this way, Mr. Moore?”. She started pushing at his chest with both hands. “Can you at least be a bit reserved and keep some distance between us?” Theodore squinted at the woman who was pushing at him. Her hands on his chest were trembling right now, the warmth from her palms making Theodore arch his eyebrow. He looked at her face that was covered in makeup. He frowned and touched her face. “Don’t apply so much foundation next time. It doesn’t suit you.” Natalie was angered by the strange remark and shoved him away. “You weirdo! Why the hell did you say that? I like applying this much makeup, so what? It’s none of your business!” The woman stood up impatiently. “I’ll take a look at what is taking my grandfather so long.” She went to Stewart’s room and knocked. “Can I come in, pappy?” “You may.” Natalie entered the room after getting her grandfather’s permission. She saw him standing by the bookshelf, reaching out to select a book. It was a journal on some modern-day fun facts. When Stewart saw that it was her, he waved at Natalie. “Come on in Nat.” Natalie went up to him. “What are you reading, pappy?” Natalie took a look and when she couldn’t understand how this was something important she reached out and closed the book. “I went out of my way to come back, and not only did you invite someone irrelevant, you even scurried away yourself.” She complained like a child. “Are you throwing a tantrum with me, little one?” Stewart flicked her forehead and looked at her lovingly. Then he sighed. “Do you know who he is?” “I do. In fact everyone in this city knows who he is, but I’ve never heard you telling me that he’s your student.” Natalie practically grew up under Mr. Gordan’s care, before she eventually went back to the Smith residence. Stewart would sometimes take her with him to class, so most of his students knew her. Stewart’s gaze darkened, then he smiled. “You were no more than a toddler back then. Yan was already a star student of mine, but then he went overseas, so it’s normal that you don’t know him.” Stewart put down the book and held her hand. “What do you think of him as a person, Nat? I think he’s nice. In fact, I know alot about him, so—” “Hold it.” Natalie frowned, feeling half-amused, half-annoyed. “Don’t look at me like I’m some unwanted bachelorette, pappy.” “Oh, so you know about that, huh? Even if you are unwanted, Yan isn’t. I’ve gotten the perfect man for you. Look at you, suffering so much after all these years. Did you think I won’t find out about it if you don’t tell me?” Stewart was livid when he saw the news. “What did your grandpa Smith have to say about this? Is that old b*stard ok with all that has happened?” How dare he let my beloved granddaughter down!.. I told you Xander’s no good, but you didn’t listen to me. Kids these days never listen, they think they know everything. Don’t you?” “Pappyyy!” She stomped her foot in frustration. “Stop scolding me. I know I am not the best when it comes to seeing through people. But now that I know his true colors, I won’t make the same mistake again.” “Fine, let’s not talk about that scoundrel who has no taste. Let’s talk about Theodore. Nat, I’m not getting any younger, and you’re the only one whom I’m still worried about. I don’t need you to live in great wealth. All I want is for you to be in peace and have happiness. Theodore’s my student, so I have confidence in him.” “But I—” “Oh, Mr. Moore, why are you alone out here? Where’s Master Gordon and the young miss?” Aunt Fay’s voice came from the living room. Natalie and Stewart looked at each other, and a moment later, they heard Theodore say, “Ms. Smith seems to dislike me.”
