The drive back to Isla’s house was silent, and for the first time in days, Aiden didn’t seem to know what to say. His jaw was clenched, his eyes focused on the road ahead, and there was a palpable tension in the air.
Isla sat in the passenger seat, her hands resting in her lap, trying to process everything they had talked about. She could feel the weight of his unspoken words hanging between them, a burden neither of them was ready to confront.
Finally, Aiden broke the silence, his voice rough and low. “I should have told you earlier. I should have trusted you more.”
Isla turned her head to look at him, her heart racing. “What are you talking about?”
He glanced at her briefly before returning his gaze to the road. “There’s something I’ve been hiding from you. Something about why I came back to Marlowe Cove in the first place.”
Isla’s pulse quickened. “Aiden, you don’t have to tell me if you’re not ready—”
“No, you deserve to know,” he interrupted, his voice edged with frustration. “You’ve already gotten involved. And if we’re going to do this… if we’re going to be us... you have to know the truth.”
The words hung in the air like a dark storm cloud. Isla wasn’t sure she was ready for whatever he was about to say, but she knew she couldn’t back down now.
“What’s going on, Aiden?” she asked quietly, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her insides.
Aiden didn’t answer immediately. He took a sharp turn down a familiar street, heading toward her house, but his hands tightened around the steering wheel, his knuckles going white. Finally, he spoke, his words slow and heavy.
“I didn’t just come back to fix the resort or to tie up loose ends. I came back because of something that happened before I left. Something that changed everything.”
Isla’s heart skipped a beat. “What happened?”
His voice grew colder, his eyes darkening with the weight of whatever he was about to reveal. “I wasn’t always the man you think I am, Isla. I didn’t just run from my past—I destroyed it. And now, it’s come back to haunt me.”
She felt a chill run through her at his words, but she didn’t look away. “What are you saying? What did you destroy?”
Aiden took a deep breath before speaking again, his words coming out as a low growl. “My family was involved in some dangerous things. Things that could’ve torn everything apart. And I made a choice—an unforgivable choice.”
The pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place, but Isla couldn’t fully grasp it. “What kind of things? Aiden, I don’t understand…”
He swallowed hard, his jaw tight. “I was involved in organized crime. The kind of stuff that gets you killed if you’re not careful. I was a part of something much bigger than me, and I got out the only way I knew how. I ran. I abandoned everything, everyone, and came here.”
Isla’s breath caught in her throat. “Aiden… you were part of that? You—”
“I was,” he said, cutting her off. “And I didn’t just leave it behind. I burned it all to the ground. But the people I left behind… they don’t forget. They don’t forgive.”
Isla was stunned into silence. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t make sense of what he was saying. “What do you mean, they don’t forgive? Are you saying you’re in danger? That you’re bringing that life here? Into my life?”
Aiden’s gaze darkened, his eyes haunted. “That’s exactly what I’m saying. And I’m afraid of what they’ll do if they find me. If they find you.”
Her heart raced, panic rising in her chest. “Aiden, no. I can’t—”
“I never wanted this for you, Isla,” he interrupted, his voice barely above a whisper. “But it’s already too late. You’re in this now, and I can’t protect you the way I want to.”
Isla’s mind spun. She hadn’t been ready for this. She hadn’t been ready to learn that the man she was falling for had such a dark, twisted past. A past that was far more dangerous than she could have ever imagined.
“You should have told me sooner,” she said, her voice barely a whisper, the hurt seeping into every word. “I thought we were building something real. But now… now everything’s a lie.”
Aiden’s expression faltered, pain flashing in his eyes. “I didn’t lie to you, Isla. I didn’t want to drag you into this. But you’re already here, and I can’t keep pretending it’s not a part of me. I can’t protect you if I keep pretending I’m someone I’m not.”
Her chest tightened with the weight of it all. She could feel her world shifting, falling apart around her. But through the fog of fear and betrayal, one thing became clear.
She couldn’t let him walk away from her now.
“I don’t care about your past,” Isla said, her voice firm, her hand reaching for his. “I don’t care about the mistakes you made. What matters is now. What matters is that you’re here with me.”
Aiden looked down at her hand, his eyes softening as he reached out to gently hold it. “I’m not the man you think I am. You deserve better than this.”
“No,” she replied, shaking her head. “I deserve you. The real you. The one I’ve gotten to know. Not the one hiding in the shadows.”
He looked at her for a long moment, his gaze heavy, filled with conflict. Then, slowly, he nodded.
“Okay,” he said, his voice tight. “But you need to understand something. It’s not just me you’ll be up against. I’m not the only one who wants to see me fall.”
A chill ran down Isla’s spine as she processed his words.
“You’re not alone in this,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.
“I know,” he replied softly. “But you may wish you were.”
---
The night was far from over, and as Aiden pulled into her driveway, Isla realized that the real fight was just beginning. A fight not just for their love, but for their survival.
And she wasn’t sure what she was about to face.
But one thing was certain.
She wasn’t walking away now.
