HAT ARE YOUR PLANS now?” Kevin asked Web the next morning. They were facing each other at the kitchen table again, eating their way through a pile of toast. The day was washed clear. Blue sky, sharp breeze, waves still rolling in like thunder on the shore. Web looked washed clean too. Lighter, somehow. He was a very nice man, Kevin thought. “I gave myself a month,” he said, somewhat nonsensically. “I thought I’d walk the coastline for a month. Clear my head. Let everything settle.” He drank some of his tea. “And then I’d be ready to make some decisions.” Kevin nodded. “Sounds sensible,” he said. He smiled into his toast. “You could always stay for a bit you know. If you wanted?” There was a little pause and Kevin started to think he’d mis-stepped. Then Web said, “I know.” And he grin
