The tips of his ears reddened at once, yet he didn't look away.
"It's only work."
His voice was cool and hoarse, as though he were emphasizing the seriousness of his words.
"Please stamp the documents, Alpha, so I can send them out."
"Why the rush?"
I picked up the emergency military report on top and read through it page by page.
Time passed.
From my right came Blake's quiet, restrained breathing, faintly hurried despite his efforts to hide it.
I knew he was waiting for me, but I deliberately didn't deal with the papers right away.
At last, Blake spoke, his voice so soft it sounded almost like a plea.
"Alpha..."
"Yes?" I didn't look up.
"If you keep reading, it will be dark before you finish."
"Problem?" I closed the document and turned to look at him.
"Lieutenant Wainscott, are you suggesting that nighttime is more suitable for getting things done?"
I opened the box and slowly rolled the seal across the vermilion inkpad.
Right in front of him, I carefully filled every recessed groove on the seal's base with ink.
His breathing caught.
"Alpha... please. Stop playing with it..."
The corners of his eyes had reddened deeply. Desire returned to his usually cool, restrained voice.
The seal hovered over the document he held out, but I didn't let it fall.
To tease him, I offered the seal to him instead.
"My wrist hurts. You do it. You can decide for yourself how much pressure to use."
Surprise flashed across his face.
I held the seal a little closer to him.
"That would be against protocol."
"Protocol?"
I smiled and leaned closer.
"Do we really need to discuss protocol between us?"
I spoke against the edge of his ear, my breath brushing his flushed ear tip as I gave the order.
"Use your own hand to stamp my name onto it."
He held the seal, his knuckles turning white.
"I..."
"Stamp it."
I leaned back in my chair and watched him calmly.
"Start with the one on top."
He took a deep breath and picked up the first paper.
Then he slowly pressed down the seal.
His teeth immediately caught his lower lip, and his shoulders shook violently.
"Too light."
I rested my chin on my hand and watched his flustered expression.
"The seal is unclear. Others will think you forged the document. Do it again."
Biting his lip, Blake raised the seal again with trembling hands.
Smack.
This time, he used force.
Each time he pressed and turned the seal against the page, his breathing quickened.
The vermilion imprint came out crisp and complete.
His fingers creased the edge of the document.
"Continue."
I pushed the second document toward him and stroked his hair.
"Five more to go."
