Chapter 2 – The Teacher’s Promise The mansion was quiet the next morning, but Amara’s thoughts were loud. She found herself drawn again to the garden, where Elias waited with his books. “Good morning, Miss Amara,” he said with a teasing smile. “You don’t have to be so formal when no one’s watching,” she replied, laughing softly. They sat beneath the arch of roses. The air smelled of jasmine, and the silence between them felt gentle. Then she said quietly, “My parents want me to marry Don Ricardo.” Elias looked at her — not with shock, but sorrow. “And you don’t want to?” She shook her head. “They say I should be grateful. I owe them everything. But it feels like my life isn’t mine.” He said softly, “Gratitude doesn’t mean surrender. You can thank them for your life — but you still have to live it.” Her eyes glistened. “You make it sound easy.” “It isn’t,” Elias said. “But some things are worth the fight — like freedom. Or love.” Their eyes met, and something unspoken bloomed between them. That afternoon, when the lessons ended, Elias lingered by the gate. “If you ever need to talk,” he said, “I’ll listen. Always.” “Thank you,” she whispered. Weeks passed. Don Ricardo’s visits became more frequent, and each one made Amara feel smaller. Meanwhile, Elias grew distant — not from coldness, but from pain. One rainy afternoon, Amara found him in the pavilion, soaked but smiling faintly. “Elias,” she said. “What if I say yes to Don Ricardo?” He looked at her, eyes steady. “Would that make you happy?” Her voice broke. “No.” “Then don’t,” he said simply. “Promise me you won’t.” “I can’t promise that,” she whispered. “They’ve given me everything.” “Then I’ll make a promise instead,” Elias said. “I’ll leave, build a life, and return when I’m worthy of you. Not as a tutor — but as a man who loves you.” Tears fell down her face. “Elias…” “Don’t give up,” he said. “Not on your heart.” And with that, he disappeared into the rain. That night, she wrote in her notebook: “He walked away beneath the rain, Leaving me with silence and pain. Yet in my heart, a promise stays — That love will find its rightful place.” Chapter 3 – The Arrangement Weeks later, her father announced her engagement at dinner. “To a prosperous future,” he said, raising his glass. “And to the union of two fine families.” Her heart sank as her mother smiled proudly. “Amara, Don Ricardo wishes to make you his wife.” She wanted to scream, I don’t love him! But instead, she whispered, “Yes.” Applause filled the room, but Amara felt hollow. That night, she sat in the garden, crying quietly. Above her, the stars shimmered like a thousand distant hopes. Then, days later, Liza handed her a letter at the gate — written in familiar handwriting. “Amara, I said I would return when I was worthy. That day is coming. Please hold on to your heart. —Elias” She pressed it to her chest, trembling. He hadn’t forgotten her. For the first time in months, she smiled.
