I always do

I woke up slowly. For a second, nothing made sense. Then I sat up, And remembered. Aaron’s room. The party. The balcony. The kiss. My chest tightened slightly. “Great,” I muttered. So great Allison". I said placing a hand on my forehead. The room was quiet. Too neat. Too… him. The door opened. Aaron walked in. Fresh. Calm. Like nothing had happened. His eyes landed on me, pausing for a second before he shut the door behind him. “You’re awake.” “Yeah.” I replied. Silence. I pushed myself off the bed, brushing my hair back. “I should go.” “You should freshen up first,” he said, already turning slightly. “Bathroom’s there.” Like he’d done this before. Like I wasn’t the first girl in his room. That thought shouldn’t have bothered me. But it did. “Okay.” I said as I walked gently to the bathroom. When I came out, he was leaning against the wall, scrolling through his phone. He looked up. Paused. His gaze moved over me. Quick, but enough to notice. Then he smirked. “You were surprising last night.” I frowned slightly. “What’s that supposed to mean?” He pushed off the wall, stepping closer. “Didn’t think you had it in you,” he said, voice low, teasing. “You don’t act like the goody Allison I know.” My cheeks warmed. “That’s not funny.” “It’s not a joke.” His eyes held mine for a second longer. “Maybe I’ve been underestimating you.” Something about the way he said it made my stomach flip. I looked away first. “Can you take me home?” A pause. Then— “Yeah.” The drive was... Okay. But not awkward. Just… calm. Like neither of us was ready to talk about what actually happened. He dropped me off like usual. No extra words. No lingering looks. Just— “See you.” And he was gone. The moment I got inside, everything caught up to me. My mum was in the kitchen. She turned as I closed the door. "Hello". I waved at her. "Hello Sweetheart. " Freshen up so we can eat. I think we have a lot to discuss". She said with an easy smile. "Yes mama. Be right back". I took a quick shower, changed into something soft. Then I went downstairs to meet my mum. Breakfast was her was splendid. Peaceful. The type I had been missing. When I was done, I went to my room and laid on my bed. My body relaxed instantly. My mind didn’t. The party replayed. Paige. Her face when Aaron snapped at her. The way she watched us. Then— The kiss. My eyes shut tightly. “That was a mistake.” It had to be. Because nothing about this was real. Nothing. Aaron was just— Aaron. And I was just playing a part. So why did it feel like more? I exhaled slowly. “Whatever.” I turned to my side. And before I could think any further— I drifted off. Monday came too fast. The routine felt normal again. Too normal. Aaron’s car was already outside. Of course it was. I stepped out, closing the door behind me. He didn’t get out this time. Just watched me as I walked over. That same look. Quiet. Focused. I opened the door and got in. “Morning.” “Morning.” The drive to school felt like nothing had changed. But something had. I just didn’t know what. The moment we arrived— Eyes. Whispers. The usual. Aaron stepped out first, then walked around. Opened my door. Like always. Like we were something real. His hand brushed lightly against my back as we walked in. Subtle. But enough. “I’ve got practice later,” he said. “Okay.” “Stay out of trouble.” I rolled my eyes slightly. “You say that like I look for it.” “You attract it.” That almost made me smile. Almost. By break time, I needed space. Aaron was at basketball practice. The school felt quieter without him around. Lighter. I headed to the library without thinking. Of course. It was empty enough. Peaceful. Predictable. “Allison.” I looked up. Liam. He stood a few steps away, hands in his pockets, that easy smile on his face. “I guessed you’d be here,” he said. I raised a brow. “You guessed?” He shrugged lightly. “You look like the type.” “That’s not creepy at all.” He laughed softly. “Can I sit?” I hesitated for a second. Then nodded. “…Okay.” Talking to Liam felt easy. That was the problem. No tension. No pressure. Just… normal. We talked about random things. Classes. Teachers. The party. Well—not everything about the party. Just enough. “You disappeared early,” he said. “I was tired.” He didn’t push. Just nodded. “I get that.” A small silence passed. But it wasn’t heavy. Just… comfortable. “I should go,” I said finally, standing up. “I’ll walk you.” “You don’t have to.” “I know.” But he did anyway. We stepped out of the building, still talking lightly. Nothing serious. Just conversation. The kind that didn’t leave you thinking too much. We reached the corner leading to the next block. “That’s me,” I said. He nodded. “Yeah.” A pause. Then he turned slightly. “See you, Allison.” “See you.” I turned to leave— “Allison.” I stopped. Turned back. He had walked a few steps away but came back. Like he forgot something. “I’ll take you home,” he said. I blinked. “What?” “After school,” he added. “You don’t have to go with him.” My heart skipped slightly. “I—” “I’ll take her.” The voice came from behind me. Low. Calm. Familiar. My breath caught. Aaron. He stepped forward slowly, his gaze moving from Liam to me. Then back to Liam. “I’ll take her home,” he repeated. A small pause. Then— “I always do.” Silence. And just like that— Everything shifted again.
