Chapter 15: The Truth He Never Told Her The rain continued falling long after Noah and Emma stopped speaking. Emma sat quietly on the edge of the bed, her fingers intertwined tightly in her lap. She had spent the last few minutes trying to understand the man standing in front of her. Noah Bennett. The boy who had once made her believe in forever. The man who had disappeared without an explanation. The man who had somehow found his way back into her life. And now... The man who was telling her that everything she thought she knew about their past was a lie. Emma finally looked up. “You said you would tell me the truth.” Noah nodded. “I will.” “Then tell me.” His eyes dropped to the floor. For a moment, he looked almost afraid. Not of her. Of the memories. “I didn't leave you because I stopped loving you.” Emma's heart tightened. “Then why did you leave?” Noah slowly sat across from her. “Because my father found out about us.” Emma frowned. “What did your father have to do with us?” “Everything.” He took a deep breath. “My family was falling apart back then. My father was involved in things I didn't understand at the time. Business deals. Debts. People who weren't exactly... good people.” Emma stared at him. “And you were involved?” “No.” His answer was immediate. “But I knew too much.” Emma remained silent. Noah continued. “My father discovered that someone was using our family company to move money illegally. When I found out, I wanted to expose everything.” “You could have told me.” “I wanted to.” “Then why didn't you?” “Because they threatened you.” Emma's breath caught. Noah looked directly into her eyes. “They knew about you, Emma. They knew where you lived. They knew where you worked. They knew everything.” Her heart began pounding. “I thought they were bluffing,” he continued. “Until one night, I came home and found an envelope on my bed.” “What was inside?” “Pictures.” Emma swallowed. “Pictures of me?” Noah nodded. “Pictures of you leaving work. Pictures of you walking home. Pictures of you sitting outside that little café you loved.” Emma's face went pale. “You're serious.” “I've never been more serious.” She looked away, trying to process everything. “Why didn't you tell me?” “Because I knew you.” Emma looked at him. “You would've stayed.” A tear slipped down her cheek. “And I couldn't risk that.” Noah's voice cracked. “So I made you hate me.” Emma stared at him. “What?” “I knew if I told you I didn't love you anymore, you'd let me go.” Her lips trembled. “You told me you never loved me.” “I lied.” “You told me I meant nothing to you.” “I lied.” “You told me you had already moved on.” “I lied.” Emma stood abruptly. “You don't get to say that!” Noah stood too. “I know.” “You destroyed me!” “I know.” “I spent years wondering what was wrong with me!” “I know.” “I thought I wasn't enough!” Noah's eyes filled with tears. “You were always enough.” Emma shook her head. “Then why didn't you come back?” “I wanted to.” “Then why?” “Because it wasn't over.” The room fell silent. Noah walked toward the window. “I spent three years making sure those people couldn't reach you. I changed everything. My number. My address. My business connections. I disappeared from everyone who could lead them to you.” Emma whispered, “And when did it become safe?” “Six months ago.” She stared at him. “Six months?” He nodded. “I could have come back then.” “But you didn't.” “No.” “Why?” Noah turned around. “Because I was scared.” Emma blinked. “You?” “Yes.” He gave a sad smile. “I was terrified that you wouldn't want me anymore.” Emma's heart broke all over again. “I waited for you.” “I know.” “You could have found me.” “I did.” Her eyes widened. “What?” “I've known where you were for years.” She stared at him in disbelief. “You watched me?” “From a distance.” “That sounds creepy.” A small laugh escaped him. “I know.” Despite herself, Emma smiled through her tears. Noah smiled too. But the smile disappeared quickly. “I saw you graduate.” Emma's eyes widened. “I saw you get your first job.” “You were there?” “I was.” “When?” “I was standing across the street.” Emma covered her mouth. “You saw all of that?” “Almost everything.” “Why didn't you come to me?” “Because every time I saw you, I wanted to run straight into your arms.” His voice softened. “But I knew that if I did, I might put you in danger again.” Emma looked down. “And now?” “Now I don't care.” She looked up. “Noah.” “I've spent three years protecting you from a distance.” He stepped closer. “I don't want to do that anymore.” Emma's heart pounded. “I want to protect you beside me.” She shook her head slowly. “You can't just expect me to forget everything.” “I don't.” “You hurt me.” “I know.” “I don't know if I can trust you.” “I know.” “And I don't know if I can love you the way I used to.” Noah's face fell. Emma immediately regretted the words. But before she could take them back, he nodded. “Then don't.” She frowned. “What?” “Don't love me the way you used to.” He stepped closer. “Love me differently.” Emma stared at him. “Let me earn it.” Her eyes filled with tears. “Every day,” he whispered. “For as long as it takes.” Emma looked into his eyes. For the first time, she wasn't looking at the boy who had broken her heart. She was looking at a man who had carried the weight of their past alone. A man who had sacrificed three years because he believed it would keep her safe. A man who had come back. Not because it was easy. But because he finally believed they deserved another chance. Emma slowly reached for his hand. Noah froze. She intertwined her fingers with his. “I hate you.” He smiled faintly. “I know.” “I really hate you.” “I know.” “You hurt me so badly.” “I know.” She stepped closer. “But I still love you.” Noah's breath caught. “Emma...” “I don't know what happens next.” “Neither do I.” “I don't know if everything will be okay.” “It won't always be.” She looked at him. “But I'll be there.” Emma smiled through her tears. “That sounds like a promise.” “It is.” She rested her forehead against his chest. For the first time in three years, Noah wrapped his arms around her. And Emma finally allowed herself to cry. Not because she was broken. But because she was finally letting go of the pain she had carried for so long. Outside, the rain began to fade. Inside, two people who had spent years running from each other finally stood still. Neither knew what the future held. But for tonight... They chose each other. The next morning, Emma woke up before Noah. Sunlight streamed through the curtains. She turned her head. Noah was asleep beside her, one hand resting near hers. For several seconds, she simply watched him. Then she smiled. He looked peaceful. Almost like the boy she remembered. Emma quietly got out of bed and walked toward the kitchen. She had barely started making coffee when she heard footsteps behind her. “Morning.” She turned. Noah stood there, his hair messy and his shirt slightly wrinkled. Emma smiled. “Morning.” “You're making coffee?” “Yes.” “For me?” “No.” He laughed. “Still mean.” “Still annoying.” He walked closer. “Still beautiful.” Emma rolled her eyes. “You haven't changed.” “I have.” She looked at him. “How?” Noah gently touched her cheek. “I finally learned that loving someone isn't enough.” Emma's smile faded slightly. “What is enough?” “Choosing them.” Her heart fluttered. “And I'm choosing you.” Emma looked down. Noah leaned closer. “Even if you don't choose me today.” She looked back at him. “What if I do?” His eyes softened. “Then I'll spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret it.” Emma smiled. She didn't know it yet. But Noah had already made a decision. A decision that would change both their lives. He wasn't going to ask her to simply forgive him. He wasn't going to ask her to forget the past. He was going to give her something she had never expected from him. A future. And somewhere inside his jacket... Was a small black box. A box Emma hadn't seen yet. A box containing a question Noah had been waiting three years to ask. Will you marry me? But before he could ask... There was one more secret Emma needed to discover. One secret that could change everything. And this time... It wasn't about Noah's past. It was about hers. To be continued... 💕
