Episode 3: Breaking Points

698 Words
The following week was a blur of presentations, late nights, and awkward encounters with Drew at work. Despite their brief moments of tension-laced conversation at the art exhibit, everything seemed to return to normal. Drew was still distant, his words cutting when necessary, while Ashley focused on her work, trying to push the confusing emotions aside. But it wasn’t easy. Every time she saw Drew in the office, her thoughts would wander back to that night. She couldn’t understand why he haunted her thoughts so much. He was arrogant, dismissive, and utterly frustrating—so why did she feel like there was more to him? One late afternoon, Ashley sat in her cubicle, reviewing her latest marketing proposal, when the sudden sound of raised voices from the office next door made her pause. She recognized Drew’s voice immediately, sharp and firm, though it was laced with an underlying tension she hadn’t heard before. Curiosity got the better of her, and she quietly stood up, inching closer to the door. She could hear Drew’s words more clearly now, his tone colder than usual. “You can’t keep using me like this, Dad,” Drew’s voice echoed through the thin walls. “I’m not some puppet you can control. I’m done playing along with your games.” Ashley’s heart skipped a beat. She’d heard bits and pieces of the strained relationship between Drew and his father, Alexander Mathew, but nothing like this. She had always assumed Drew’s arrogance was simply a byproduct of his wealth and status. But now, she was beginning to wonder if there was more to his cold exterior—more than just the corporate face he showed the world. She was about to turn back to her desk when she heard Drew’s voice crack, a rare sign of vulnerability. “You’ve ruined everything, and I don’t know how to fix it anymore,” Drew admitted, his words laced with frustration and hurt. Ashley froze. She knew she shouldn’t be eavesdropping, but something about hearing Drew in this state made her heart ache. She could sense the pain he was hiding—something raw and unspoken, far from the man who had stood so confidently in front of her during their first meeting. Before she could fully process what she’d just overheard, the door to Drew’s office opened, and he stepped out, his expression unreadable. He locked eyes with Ashley for a brief moment, and the tension between them was palpable. Neither spoke for what felt like an eternity. “I didn’t mean for you to hear that,” Drew said, his voice lower than usual. Ashley swallowed hard, her thoughts racing. She could feel the weight of the situation—something had shifted. She was no longer looking at the arrogant man who had criticized her work. Instead, she saw someone who was struggling with the ghosts of his past, someone who had built walls around himself to protect a vulnerability that had long been hidden. “I didn’t… I wasn’t eavesdropping,” Ashley said, her voice softer than she intended. “But I heard enough to know that you’re dealing with something difficult.” Drew’s eyes softened, but he quickly masked it with a dismissive shrug. “Don’t get involved, Ashley. It’s not your problem.” But Ashley couldn’t shake the feeling that it was. For a moment, neither of them moved. The silence hung between them like an unspoken invitation to understand, to offer comfort, but neither knew how to take the first step. “Are you okay?” Ashley asked, the words slipping out before she could stop herself. Drew looked at her for a long moment, his gaze unreadable. “I’m fine,” he said, but there was a trace of doubt in his voice. He turned away, heading toward the elevator, leaving Ashley standing there, her mind spinning. As she returned to her desk, Ashley’s thoughts raced. There was so much she wanted to say, but she couldn’t find the words. Drew was clearly battling something bigger than either of them could comprehend, and despite her instincts telling her to stay out of it, something inside her refused to walk away.
