Episode 4: The Ties that Bind

958 Words
Ashley couldn’t focus on her work the next day. The memory of Drew’s words, his vulnerability, and the pain she’d heard in his voice gnawed at her mind. It wasn’t just curiosity anymore. There was something about Drew that unsettled her, drew her in. She found herself thinking about him constantly, wondering what had happened between him and his father, Alexander Mathew, to make him so distant, so… broken. She tried to push the thoughts aside, but they wouldn’t leave. Instead, she buried herself in her work, tackling one task after another in an attempt to distract herself. But it didn’t help. It wasn’t until later that afternoon that her thoughts would finally be interrupted. She was sitting in her cubicle when she received an unexpected message—Drew’s name flashed on her screen. Her heart skipped a beat. What could he possibly want? Drew Mathew: Can we talk? Ashley hesitated, staring at the message. Part of her wanted to ignore it. After all, he had made it clear that their relationship was strictly professional—or at least, that’s how it seemed. But another part of her felt compelled to respond. Ashley: What about? The response came quickly. Drew Mathew: Not here. Can you meet me downstairs in ten minutes? She glanced at the clock. Ten minutes? She didn’t have time for this—she had a meeting with her boss in just over an hour. But something in his message tugged at her, and against her better judgment, she decided to meet him. She grabbed her things and headed downstairs, her heart racing with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety. When she arrived at the lobby, Drew was waiting by the elevator, his posture stiff as usual, but there was something different about him today. His usual air of confidence seemed tempered by something else. He looked up when she approached, and for the first time, his expression was unreadable. “You wanted to talk?” Ashley asked, trying to sound casual, but the nervousness in her voice was obvious. Drew nodded, motioning for her to follow him outside. They walked in silence for a few moments, the tension between them palpable. Neither of them spoke, both unsure of what to say next. Finally, Drew broke the silence. “I know you overheard my conversation yesterday,” he said quietly, his gaze fixed ahead. “And I… I didn’t want you to think I was weak.” His voice faltered slightly, betraying a hint of insecurity that Ashley had never expected. Ashley’s heart softened at the words. She had never seen Drew like this—vulnerable, uncertain. The walls he had so carefully built around himself were starting to crack, and she couldn’t help but feel a sense of responsibility, as if she needed to help him put them back together. “I don’t think you’re weak,” she said softly. “I just… I heard you. And I don’t think you need to carry that burden alone.” Drew stopped walking, turning to face her. His eyes were tired, filled with a mix of exhaustion and frustration. “You don’t understand,” he said, his voice low. “My father… He’s never been easy on me. He controls everything in my life, and I’ve spent years trying to get out from under his thumb. But the harder I try, the more he pulls me back in. It’s like I’m trapped, and I don’t know how to get out.” Ashley could see the pain in his eyes, the weight of a lifetime of expectations and disappointments pressing down on him. She wanted to reach out, to comfort him, but she didn’t know how. It was as if a wall had been built between them, and yet, she could still see the cracks. “I can’t fix everything, Drew,” she said after a long pause. “But you don’t have to go through this alone. If you ever need someone to talk to, or if you just need a distraction, I’m here.” Drew’s gaze softened, and for a brief moment, there was a flicker of something unspoken between them. Something raw, something real. But then, just as quickly, he pulled away, the mask of indifference falling back into place. “I don’t need anyone’s pity,” he muttered, his tone cold once again. “I just… I don’t want to be a burden.” Ashley wasn’t sure what to say to that. She wanted to argue, to tell him that asking for help didn’t make him weak, but instead, she simply nodded. “I get it,” she said quietly. “I won’t push you. But if you change your mind, I’m here.” For a moment, they just stood there, looking at each other, the distance between them stretching farther than the physical space that separated them. Then Drew turned and walked away, leaving Ashley standing there with her thoughts swirling in her head. The next few days were tense. Drew avoided her at work, and Ashley did her best to focus on her tasks, but she couldn’t ignore the lingering feeling that there was something unfinished between them. She had tried to offer him a connection, a chance for him to open up, but he had closed himself off again. It was as if he couldn’t allow anyone to get too close. The walls were back up, and he wasn’t ready to let anyone in. But Ashley couldn’t forget the look in his eyes, the pain he had tried so desperately to hide. And no matter how much he pushed her away, she knew she couldn’t just walk away from him. Something—something deep inside her—refused to let her.
