MIRA'S POV
As they entered the room their expressions shifted instantly from confusion to shock to something far colder. Their eyes moved from the body on the bed to me, standing there covered in blood.
I raised my hands to protest innocence as their expression gave off what they were about to do next.
“No!” I cried, backing away. “Please, you have to listen to me. I don’t know what happened. I woke up like this. I swear ”
“Tell us quickly what happened here?,” one of them commanded sharply.
“I don't know, I just woke up beside him and realized he was dead.” I quickly replied.
“How did you get here with him?” The man asked as his expression darkened.
“I don't know,” I shook my head and that seemed to annoy him the most.
“Are you joking with me?” He moved forward and grabbed me.
“I’ve never even met him!” I insisted, tears were forming at the corner of my eyes now.
The expression of the man in front of me became darker. “Keep quiet already and if you try to run, I'll break your legs.”
“Take her out,” He said and strong hands grabbed my arms, pulling them behind my back. Cold metal snapped closed around my wrists.
“This is a mistake,” I sobbed, struggling weakly. “Please. I’m innocent. I would never harm the Alpha.”
The men yanked me besides them as we left the room. “Witholding information is still treason.”
“Save it for the council.”
As they dragged me from the room, I cast one last look over my shoulder at the lifeless Alpha on the bed.
“Don't lag behind,” one of the werewolves pulled the chain. Questions burned in my mind. Who had brought me here? Who had killed him? And why was I next to him?
I was taken to a car waiting outside. The whole building was now a secured crime perimeter.
My head was bent low as I was led into the car and the doors slammed shut besides me. There was a werewolf police at my left and right while I was cuffed in the middle.
The only thing that filled my mind was how does someone get out of this?
They first took me to the cell and I requested to be heard. It was my first time in a cell and I couldn't imagine leaving the rest of my life behind bars or even killed.
After a few hours of being detained I was taken to an interrogation room.
“How did you get into the room?”
“I don't know.”
“What did you do to the Alpha?”
“Nothing, I didn't even realize I was in the same room with me until I woke up.”
“Have you had any interaction with the Alpha before?”
“No.”
“Then was there any reason to kill the Alpha?”
“No, I didn't kill him! I woke up and realized I was in bed with him and he was dead! I'm clueless!”
“I guess, we're done here.” He signaled his fingers and I was led back to the cell.
The next day the iron doors groaned open. I flinched as rough hands pulled me to my feet.
The hand cuffs clinked softly around my wrists again. Then I was led outside and as soon as I stepped foot out, the noise hit me.
“Murderer!”
“She killed our Alpha!”
“Monster!”
The words were hurled at me like stones. My head dropped instinctively.
I recognized some of the faces, wolves I had grown up with.
“She doesn’t even look sorry.”
“She should be killed immediately.” People started hurling different things at me and the court guards formed an encirclement till I got back to the vehicle.
My heart pounded in my chest.
Sorry? The word felt wrong.
My wolf whimpered softly inside me.
The vehicle drove towards the court and even there it was worse. A crowd had gathered far larger than I expected.
“She deserves death!”
“An eye for an eye!”
“Justice for Alpha Killian!”
Each shout made my chest ache harder. The guards formed an encirclement around me before I was led out and even still the crowd pressed forward.
“Move!” a guard barked.
The pack guards immediately formed a barricade.
“Let us see her face!”
“She should look at what she’s done!”
I stumbled as I hurried along. I dared to lift my eyes just once and instantly regretted it.
So many of them were staring straight at me.
I walked through the massive doors of the court carved with ancient symbols of law and balance. Then the doors slammed shut behind me.
Inside the court, the air was colder. I was led to the front of the court into a defendant stand. Around me there were rows of seats already filled with spectators. At the far end stood the high platform where judgment would be passed.
My legs trembled as I stood in the box.
“All rise to greet the judge.”
Chains weighed down my wrists.
The heavy doors opened and Judge Thorne entered.
“You may be seated.”
“This court is now in session,” Judge Thorne continued. “We are here to try Mira Carter for the murder of Alpha Killian Moonshine.”
A murmur rippled through the court. I swallowed hard.
The prosecution stood first.
“In the early hours of yesterday Alpha Killian Moonshine’s death,” he began, “the accused was found alone with the victim’s body, covered in his blood. There were no signs of forced entry and no witnesses to any other suspect.”
“Mira also denies any involvement in his death but she can not also explain how she got with the Alpha and what transpired between the both of them. With all this the evidence is clear she is the number one suspect.”
Witness after witness was called.
A healer spoke of the fatal wound.
A guard stepped forward and said that he had seen me and the Alpha go into the room together.
“We now call Judy Carter to the stand.”
My head snapped up.
My own sister.
Hope surged through me.
She walked forward slowly. She didn’t look at me.
“State your relationship with the accused.”
“I am her older sister.”
“She’s always been… troubled,” Judy continued.
“In what way?”
“She had violent tendencies. Sudden mood swings. She talked often about handling things herself and she had mentioned many times about how she hated the Alpha.”
“You’re lying!” I spoke out.
“Mira the witness is still talking.”
“And on the night of the murder?”
“She left the house late. She didn’t say where she was going. When she returned… She was different.”
“No,” I breathed.
She was already stepping down.
“We now call Beta Issac Steele to the stand.”
Issac my mate.
He didn’t look at me.
“What is your relationship to the accused?”
“I am her mate.”
“And did you observe any suspicious behavior prior to Alpha Killian’s death?”
“Yes. She was unstable after getting her wolf. She spoke about feeling… drawn to darkness.”
“Order!”
Issac finally looked at me.
There was no love in his eyes.
“She really said a lot of sinister things. I believe she is capable of murder.”
The bond screamed.
Judge Thorne rose once more.
“Mira Carter, this court finds you guilty of the murder of Alpha Killian Moonshine.”
“You are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment, effective immediately.”
Something inside me went completely still.
