MIRA’S POV
Reis observed me for a long moment, rubbing his chin in thought before speaking.
“You can’t investigate this from inside a prison,” he said flatly. “If we’re going to expose Judy and Issac, you need to come back to the pack.”
I stared at him like he had just suggested walking me into a fire. “Come back to the pack?” I repeated. “You want to take me there?”
“Yes.”
A hollow laugh escaped my lips. “Have you forgotten what they think of me? They believe I murdered their Alpha. If I step into pack territory, they won’t wait for a trial. They’ll tear me apart.”
“If you’re with me, they won’t touch you.”
“You won’t always be there,” I shot back. “And even if they don’t attack me, they’ll be on guard. I won’t get close enough to learn anything.”
Silence fell between us. For the first time, Reis leaned back and truly considered my words.
“You’re right,” he admitted. “If you return as Mira Carter, they’ll be alarmed.”
“And dangerous,” I added quietly.
His eyes sharpened. “What if you don’t return as Mira Carter?”
I frowned. “What does that mean?”
“A new identity. A new name. A new background.”
“They’ll still recognize me.”
“That’s where I’m going.”
Understanding dawned slowly. “You’re suggesting…”
“Yes you'll need to do plastic surgery.” He dropped the words.
I raised my eyebrows in surprise. I had not even thought about it.
“You would alter your appearance and change your identity,” he continued calmly. “Enough that no one connects your old identity and enters as my bride.” He said with a straight face.
My heart pounded. “You’re asking me to give up the last thing that’s mine.”
“You said you wanted the truth,” he replied. “This is the price.”
I hesitated for a moment. Changing my face felt like surrendering the final piece of myself. But then I remembered Judy’s smirk, Issac’s cold voice in court, the life they stole.
If keeping my face meant rotting here while they lived in my parents’ mansion, what was I protecting? Pride? Or fear?
I lifted my head.
“If this is what it takes to prove I’m innocent… and prove they’re guilty,” I said steadily, “then I’ll do it.”
Reis nodded once and stepped out.
When he returned minutes later with guards, my cuffs were unlocked. The ankle restraints followed.
“You are no longer a prisoner,” he said. “From this moment forward, you are under my custody.”
“If you betray me,” he added quietly, “there will be nowhere you can hide.”
“I’m not the one who betrayed anyone,” I replied.
He signaled the guards. “Prepare her. We leave now.”
*******
Three months later the Mira Carter I knew no longer existed. I did the plastic surgery and just changing some features made my whole appearance look different.
The woman in the mirror had softer features, sharper cheekbones, different eyes and strangers stared back at me.
To the world, I was now Luna, wife of Alpha King Reis Moonshine.
It was a sudden and beautiful marriage to the public and a love story between the Alpha King and his mysterious Luna.
But as for the truth? We were just two people sharing the same house.
We made rules the night I moved into his estate. There would be no touching, no unnecessary conversations, no prying into each other’s private lives and also no crossing boundaries unless it is related to our mission.
Our marriage was just a contract and nothing much. He lifted the prison sentence and gave me protection and anything and I gave him proximity to the people he wanted destroyed.
I needed to uncover the case and prove to him that Judy and Isaac framed me and were the real culprits.
We barely spoke beyond strategy.
At public events, he would rest a possessive hand at my waist, his expression unreadable while cameras flashed and the world admired us, but back home, it was very silent.
Sometimes I caught him watching with suspicion. He didn’t seem completely convinced about me and still had his guard up. As if he were still deciding whether I was a good asset… or a mistake.
That evening Reis returned back home in the evening. He walked up to me making dinner in the kitchen.
“Judy and Issac are hosting a dual celebration,” he said. “A gender reveal and their company’s anniversary.” He announced and I turned to look at him. My chest tightened as the first phase had already begun.
“They’ve invited the entire elite circle,” he continued. “We would be attending it.”
I swallowed hard. “They won’t recognize me,” I said quietly, more to myself than to him.
“Yes, they won’t,” he confirmed. “Also this will be your first real test.”
I nodded. We would attend together and while Judy celebrated her unborn child and the empire she stole from me thinking she had me locked in prison for life. I would uncover her schemes.
