Chapter 12: Shadows of the Past

376 Words
Elara sat by the window, the afternoon light spilling across the polished floor. Outside, the city moved without her, oblivious to the turmoil inside this house. She should have been organizing files or learning the rhythm of Nathaniel’s household, but instead, her mind drifted… back. Back to nights she had promised herself she would forget. She remembered the sound of shouting, doors slamming, the way her small body had curled into corners hoping the noise would pass. The sting of betrayal from people she had trusted. The loneliness that never left her, even when she was surrounded by others. A hand on her shoulder startled her. She turned, heart thumping. Nathaniel stood there, expression unreadable. “I didn’t mean to startle you.” Elara shook her head. “I… it’s nothing.” “You’ve been quiet,” he said. “Since the first clash with Cassia. I notice these things.” Her throat went dry. She had spent years hiding every vulnerability. She wasn’t sure if she wanted him to see it. “I’m fine,” she whispered. He knelt beside her, close enough that she could feel his warmth. “You don’t have to be. Not here. Not with me.” Her chest tightened. The words were simple, but they carried weight she hadn’t expected. Nobody had ever said anything like that to her. Nobody had ever acknowledged her pain without judgment. Elara’s eyes filled with unshed tears. “I… I don’t know how to trust anyone,” she admitted. Nathaniel’s gaze softened, just slightly. “Then start small,” he said quietly. “I don’t expect you to trust me overnight. But I will not hurt you. That I can promise.” She studied him, trying to measure his words. And maybe, just maybe, she felt a flicker of hope. “I… I’ve survived everything before,” she said, her voice trembling. “I can survive this too.” He nodded, close enough that she could see the faintest cracks in his usual composure. “I know you can. And I’ll be here… making sure of it.” For the first time, Elara realized: this contract wasn’t just about survival. It was a chance—dangerous, terrifying, and thrilling—to start living again.
