- Finn’s POV -

My heart broke as I spoke those words. I could hear my wolf howling in pain as I rejected her. Betrayal, disappointment and anger coarse through my vein and took over my senses. How could she do this to me? Even if she couldn’t feel our mate bond, why was she f*****g another guy in broad daylight in a public place? Was she so desperate that she had open her legs to Nate, who has probably slept with every moving she wolf in the pack?

I needed to get out of here. I didn’t want to look at her for another minute. I just wanted the pain to go away and to forget about all of this. I let go of her and stood up to leave when suddenly, her eyes glowed. They lit up as if someone had turn on the switch and went from the normal dark brown to a lighter brown. Her iris enlarged and a black circle formed around her light brown iris. I couldn’t take my eyes off her and reached out to touch her face but before I could reach her, her eyes suddenly went dull and she fell back on the ground.

Despite her betrayal, I was afraid that something bad would happen to her. After all, she was my future Beta’s sister. I slapped her face gently but she didn’t respond. “Kayla, stop pretending. Look at me!” I commanded with my Alpha voice. She didn’t move even though her eyes were still opened. I had a bad feeling about this and rushed her to the hospital.

- Leyton’s POV -

I drove as fast to the hospital as I could when I received Finn’s call. Fear gripped my heart as I thought about what he said on the phone.

Kayla is not responsive. Her eyes are opened but she doesn’t respond.

As soon as I got to the hospital, I rushed to the ER and saw Finn pacing. I grabbed him and demanded to know what had happened. The look in his eyes sent chills down my spine. He looked so fearful but also angry and guilty. I didn’t know what to make of it except to expect the worst.

“I found her in the garage.. and she.. she just.. her eyes were opened but she won’t look at me.. she won’t respond to anything I said.. I’m sorry, Leyton, I’m sorry,” Finn said hoarsely.

I knew there was something more that he wasn’t telling me. Finn is never incoherent. Something is very wrong. Just as I was trying to make sense of everything, the doctor came to us. This time he hesitated before saying, “I don’t know what happened to her and if you can’t tell me what happened, then I can only tell you that, she’s alive and fine. Her vitals are good but for some reason, she’s not responsive to any external stimulus. It’s like her mind has left the body and only the physical body is left. I don’t mean to overstep but during our examination, we found bruises on her shoulders, waist and scratch marks on her chest. The scratch marks are deep and was likely from a claw. Her lips were also bleeding and there are bruises on her neck too.”

Before the doctor could continue, I couldn’t hold myself back anymore and shouted, “What do you mean by that?! What are you talking about? Who hurt her?” With the last question, I turned and glared at Finn. I didn’t want to believe it but I had to suspect that he might have hurt my sister. His silence drove me mad with anger and the doctor hesitated before continuing, “There is nothing that we can do for her here. I’d suggest to bring her home and maybe a safe environment would help her mind to come back.”

He left and the nurses wheeled a bed out. On the bed laid my baby sister. Her lips were busted and her hair in a mess. Her eyes were opened but there was no life in them. My heart broke as my fingers caress her face and bruised neck.

“Hey kid, talk to me. You’re safe now. I won’t ever let anyone hurt you again.”

Kayla’s lifeless eyes continued to stare straight ahead. I carried her carefully in my arms and headed for my car. I’m going to bring her home and I’ll hunt down those who have hurt her.

- Finn’s POV -

I tried to process what the doctor said but my mind just felt like a jumbled mess. The wounds on her.. did Nate abused her? Was I wrong? Instead of protecting my mate, I let her abuser go free and broke her? My wolf whimpered in pain and I could feel his disdain for me. I didn’t know what to think anymore or what to do. Even if I didn’t want her as my mate, I should have protected her as her Alpha. What have I done?!

Lost in my thoughts and agony, I didn’t realize that Leyton had already brought Kayla to her car. I ran to my car, hoping to catch them, only to see Leyton driving off. I jumped into my car and drove after them, trying to mind link Leyton. But he was shutting me off.
