- Finn’s POV -
I looked in horror as we caught up with Alpha Jake, only to see him holding Kayla’s hand and stroking her face gently. My wolf growled in anger to see someone touching my mate. Forgetting that no one knows what I’ve done, I pounced on Alpha Jake and threw him onto the ground.
“What do you think you’re doing?! How dare you!” I growled so loudly that the house shook. A fist came into contact with my fist as Alpha Jake recovered from the shock and lunged himself at me.
“STOP! BOTH OF YOU!” Yelled Leyton. For a second, we regained our senses and back down but Alpha Jake goes to Kayla’s side again, triggering the need in my heart to protect what’s mine. Before I could attack him again, the words I dreaded came out of his mouth.
“She is my mate. Martha, you have to save my mate. She is the Luna of our pack, your Luna,” Alpha Jake’s voice quivered as he said those words.
My fist fell to my side as all sorts of emotions washed over me. How was this possible? Had the Moon Goddess given Kayla a second chance mate? Have I really lost her for good now? Would she leave our pack and become Alpha Jake’s Luna? My heart clenched as I could feel the fear of losing Kayla overwhelming me.
- Leyton’s POV -
My jaw dropped at the turn of events. I don’t understand what’s up with Finn but he’s definitely hiding something from me. I cleared my throat and wanted to say something but before I could, the witch healer walked towards Kayla and put her palm on her forehead. Outside, the full moon hung in the sky as the moon light shone into the room, Kayla’s eyes began to glow as well.
“Hold her hands, Alpha Jake,” said the witch healer. She turned to look at Kayla and repeated over and over again, “Follow the glow, little one. Don’t look back.” The glow in Kayla’s eyes intensified and then slowly dimmed again. But this time, instead of those lifeless eyes, her sweet brown eyes stared back at us. They were a different shade of brown, lighter, like honey and her iris were larger with a black rim. They were so mesmerizing that I couldn’t stop staring.
Kayla whimpered as she stared in fear at the strange man holding her hands. I ran to her side and luckily, Alpha Jake let go of her without a fight. I hugged her tightly in my arms, afraid that this was all a dream. Tears streamed down my face as I kissed her forehead and then pressed my forehead against hers, relieved and thankful to have her back.
“Kayla, you’re back, you’re finally back,” I managed to say without choking on my tears, “Alpha Jake here and his witch healer brought you back. You don’t have to be afraid anymore. I’m here now and I’ll protect you.”
I’m fine, Leyton. Don’t worry, I’m ok and thank you for not giving up on me.
I frowned in confusion as I moved back and looked at Kayla. She smiled at me and nodded, while reaching out to hold my hands.
It’s me, Kayla. I can’t speak but you can hear me through our contact. Mum told me this.
Mum? How was that possible? I was even more confused but also over the moon that I could finally hear her speak again, even if it’s in this way. Alpha Jake cleared his throat and broke my train of thoughts.
“I don’t mean to disturb, but my wolf is driving me insane. May I please talk to my mate?”
I saw the surprise on Kayla’s face and it dawned on me that she probably doesn’t feel the mate pull as she has no wolf. Unsure of what Kayla wanted to do, I decided to reject Alpha Jake’s request until Kayla was ready and was prepared to fight to protect her. To my astonishment, Kayla nodded at me and after confirming that she was sure, I let Alpha Jake take my place beside Kayla.
“What are you doing?! We don’t even know this guy!” Finn screamed at me through our mind link and I could see that his fists were clenched as he tried to restrain himself. “He saved her life and she’s ok with this. What’s up with you anyway? You’re hiding something from me, Finn. Why are you so protective of Kayla?” I asked. His face fell and guilt, there was guilt written all over his face and in that moment it all clicked. My eyes flashed with anger as I dragged Finn out of Kayla’s room to confront him.
“You bastard! You rejected her didn’t you?! She was your mate, that’s why you couldn’t control yourself and killed Nate. But why didn’t you tell me anything? It’s because you also had a role to play in breaking Kayla, isn’t it?! You rejected her, you asshole!! And now what? You see another Alpha wanting to claim her and you want her back? That’s low, Finn, and I won’t let you stand in the way of her happiness!” I roared at Finn through our mind link to spare Kayla the drama. She didn’t need or deserve to relive this.
Finn didn’t defend himself and allowed me to punch him and continue to cuss at him. I stopped after seeing blood on his face. I must have broken the bastard’s nose. Feeling my anger slightly subside, I left him on the ground and went back in to Kayla’s bedroom.
“Kayla, I know now is maybe not a good time but I want you to know that I’m not giving up and I won’t take no for an answer. You’re my mate and you can only be mine.” Alpha Jake said sternly as he held Kayla’s hands and gazed into her eyes.
I didn’t know if I should intervene but fearing what Alpha Jake would do when he realizes that Kayla is mute and wolfless. I decided I needed to intervene. However, the witch healer spoke before I could say anything.
“Kayla is mute and wolfless, my Alpha. But she is given to you by the Moon Goddess. If you accept her, our pack will be blessed.”
Alpha Jake turned to look at the witch healer and they locked eyes for a few minutes. I swear they were communicating with each other but I doubt it was possible since witches and werewolves couldn’t mind link. While I was contemplating what that was about and how the witch healer could know so much so quickly, I saw Kayla gazing intensely at Alpha Jake, still holding hands as his eyes widened.
He nodded at her and gave a peck on the cheek, before standing up to take his leave. “I’ll let you rest now and I’ll be back tomorrow, my little mate,” he said before giving me a nod and leaving our house.
