20-Mate

- Finn’s POV - “Don’t worry about Kayla, I’ll take care of her until you’re back. I swear on my life that nothing bad will happen to her,” I said solemnly to Leyton as I saw the hesitation in his eyes. It’s been almost two months and Kayla hasn’t improved. We’ve been looking everywhere for doctors, witch healers and even fairies who could help her but so far, everyone has said the same. She’s alive and well, and they don’t know what’s wrong with her. A week ago, we found a good lead from my Father. There was a pack from the East Coast with a century old witch healer. Rumor had it that she could bring the dead back to life. I doubted that for sure but we were desperate and I trusted my Father as he was an experienced Alpha and had seen far more than I had. Unfortunately, the witch healer had refused to come to us. This is why Leyton is going to the other pack to try and convince her to help us. I wanted to go with him but someone had to stay and care for Kayla, besides I was forbidden by my parents to leave our pack lands to keep up the appearances that my Mother, the Luna was gravely ill and required my care. In any case, I was thankful for the opportunity to spend some time alone with Kayla with this valid excuse. This period has been especially hard as I felt my wolf getting weaker without our mate. I was still unsure if I wanted to accept Kayla as my mate but she didn’t deserve this. If anything. I deserved to be the one in her place. She was a victim of abuse, and instead of helping her, I had hurt her even more. It was simply not right and if we were to go our separate ways, I wanted her to be happy but first, she needs to get well again. After Leyton left, I went to Kayla’s room and sat beside her on her bed. Her lifeless eyes taunted me as I recalled how warm and lively they used to be. I told her hand and kissed it, hoping she could feel my regret and wake up. - Jake’s POV - I looked at the young man in front of me in amusement and chuckled. Why do wolves always come to my pack for help, thinking that we’d help them? If we were to help everyone, my witch healer would have been worked to death by now. “Alpha Jake, please, I beg you to re-consider! She’s the only family that I’ve left and I can’t lose her. Your witch healer is Kayla’s last hope! She’d turn 18 tomorrow and her life should be just beginning. If you’d help us, I’d be forever in your debt.” It was a moving speech but it was not a decision that could be made only by me anyway. Besides, having the future Beta of one of the strongest packs on the West Coast on my side could be useful in the future. I needed time to think about this. I told my Beta to prepare a guest room for Leyton and gave my word to consider the request. I went to our witch healer to seek her advice for she was not only a healer but also very wise, having lived for centuries. She had been a human in the beginning but was saved by my great grandfather when the ignorant humans condemned her to death for being a witch. The ordeal changed her and must have awoken something that was dormant in her. One day, she started having powers and was able to manipulate the elements. Slowly, she grew stronger and stronger, and also became a healer. Throughout the centuries, she has remain loyal to our pack and in turn, we respected her as an elder. “It’s the full moon tomorrow, my boy, and the girl turns 18,” mused Martha, “and at the same time there’s a change in the balance of power in the elements. Now is that a coincidence?” I frowned, annoyed that Martha must have been listening in to our conversation without my permission again. Sometimes, she’d do that with a spell and I’ve told her many times not to do that but it’s not like any of us could have stopped her. “So you think we should see this girl?” I asked in amusement as Martha was not known to be a helpful person. She nodded and the next day we headed over to the West Coast. “Welcome to the Gold Moon Pack, Alpha Jake. Thank you for agreeing to help us. I’ll let my son, Finn and his Beta, Leyton, take you to the guest house and to Kayla.” Alpha Logan said as we walked up to the pack house. I acknowledged him with a nod and followed Leyton to the guest house. It’d be dark in about an hour and the full moon would be out. I could sense the apprehensiveness in Leyton, as we went up the stairs. Finally, he asked the question that I thought he would never ask. “Alpha Jake, I know this is rude and you must be tired from the journey but I just can’t wait any longer. Could we please go see my sister before dinner? I don’t expect your witch healer to start anything right away but at least just take a quick look and if possible, give us some.. something.. initial assessment.. anything!” This was going exactly to plan. Soon, we were heading to the girl and I could hear Martha’s voice in my head to do exactly as she says later on. I scoffed at that thought and wished that I could have retorted to her that I’m the Alpha. Unfortunately, werewolves can’t mind link witches and I sure as hell cannot cast a spell to save my life. Suddenly, I smelled the sweet fragrance of cherry blossoms and it was coming from the direction of the house that we were headed towards. As we walk through the front door, I could no longer hold myself back. I ran up the stairs in the direction of the scent before anyone could hold me back. My eyes fell on the girl lying on the bed as my wolf screamed in my head. Mate! Mate!!
