- Kayla’s POV -
I was surprised to see Finn in my bedroom. How had he even gotten into our house? As if reading my thoughts, he pointed to my opened window and then told me sternly, “Don’t leave your windows opened again when you’re out. Our pack lands are secured but it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
The irony of his warning and his action made me laugh even as I nodded my head. Suddenly, I could see his eyes glowing again and fear gripped my heart as I remember what happened the last time I saw his eyes glowing. As if sensing my anxiety, Finn took a step back and put up his hands to assure me that he wasn’t going to hurt me. I calmed down and wrote to him on my phone to ask me why he was here.
- Finn’s POV -
Her laugh had caught me off guard. It was such a joyful sound and it hit me that this was the first time that I’ve heard her laugh. I was captivated but also upset that my mate was mostly unhappy during the times that we’ve spent together. The anxiety in her eyes made me realized that my eyes were probably scaring her as desire coarsed through my veins for her.
I took a step back and held up my hands to assure her that I wasn’t going to hurt her, not again, no never again! As I saw the message on her phone, a sadness tinged that she would rather type on her phone to speak with me than to have physical contact. But I guess I deserved it. To my surprise, she touched my arm and I saw the concern in her eyes.
Mate cares about us!!
My lips curled up as I realized my wolf was right, or at least I had hope that he was right. I reached out to touch her hand on my arm slowly, looking at her eyes for permission. She nodded and I held her hand as my thoughts poured out to her.
I know that I have no right to say this, Kayla, but I’m worried about you. This Alpha Jake came from nowhere and all of us barely know him. I think you need to be more cautious with him. He already knows that you can send and receive thoughts with your touch. Don’t let him know that you can do more than that.
I saw her gasped at the last part of my thought and continued.
Do you remember how you touched my face and my broken nose healed instantly?
We both winced at the thought of what happened on that day and I forced myself to continue.
It was not because of the mate bond. I wasn’t sure so I did some research and there has been no documentation in our history of the mate bond being able to heal a werewolf almost instantly. I don’t know what that was and how you did that but if you’re able to heal others like this, it’d put you in great danger, do you understand?
Kayla looked at me in confusion and asked me why do I suddenly care so much about her.
I rolled my eyes and held both her hands firmly, and looked at her sternly.
I’m telling you that you might be in danger and that’s all that you’re concerned about? Kayla, I’m serious! Promise me that you’d be careful until I manage to figure this out. If someone is hurt, do not touch them! If you can really heal someone with your touch, everyone will want you for themselves. Promise me!
Instead of responding to me, Kayla put her arms around my waist and her head rested on my chest. The sudden contact caught me by surprise and warmth engulfed me as my wolf purred at being embraced by our mate. I felt my anxiety go down a notch and hugged her back. I was still worried that Kayla’s good nature would give her secret away, putting her in danger, and if she really chooses to leave with that Alpha mutt, neither I nor Leyton’s would be able to protect her.
Kayla looked up and glared at me, warning me not to call Jake a mutt. Damn! I had forgotten that she could read my thoughts when we’re touching. She giggled and promised me that she would be careful and that she’d consider all factors before deciding whether to stay or leave. My heart sank when I realized that she was considering to leave with Alpha Jake and the next thing that I did shocked us both.
“I take it back, Kayla, I take back my rejection. I, Finn Ridgeton, accept you, Kayla Forster, as my mate.”
