The day began like any other, but everything in it felt louder, sharper, less forgiving. Adriana had opened the bookstore early, hoping the smell of paper and coffee would calm the restless beat in her chest. It didn’t. Every time the doorbell chimed, a little thread of tension pulled tighter. By noon, her assistant came in carrying a thin envelope. “Somebody left this outside,” she said, shrugging. Adriana took it, curiosity brushing at the edges of her nerves. Inside was a single sheet of paper — no signature, no greeting, just a typed line: The building’s sale is moving faster than expected. Prepare to vacate. Her stomach dropped. No formal notice, no timeline, just a threat dressed up like a courtesy. An hour later, Damian called. His voice was clipped, controlled, the tone of a man standing on a knife’s edge. “We need to meet. Not at the office.” They met in a small park a few blocks away, far enough to feel anonymous. He was already there, leaning against a railing, suit jacket off, sleeves rolled, a file clutched in his hand like it might break. “They’re accelerating everything,” he said before she even reached him. “New buyer, deeper pockets, less patience. I’ve pushed every clause I can; it’s not enough.” Adriana stood beside him, watching the city move like none of it mattered. “How bad is it?” “Bad,” he said simply. Then he glanced at her, softer now. “And someone knows about us. Or at least suspects.” She froze. “How?” “A colleague asked me this morning if I’d found the coffee shop girl ‘worth the trouble.’” He grimaced. “Too casual to be harmless.” For a long, silent moment, neither of them moved. The city roared around them, a thousand stories unfolding, but theirs suddenly felt like it was standing at the edge of a cliff. “We’re running out of time,” Adriana said quietly. Damian nodded, jaw tight, eyes full of something fierce and fragile all at once. “Then we fight,” he said, as if there was any other choice left. ---
