By the time the rain eased into a soft drizzle, the café had emptied. Chairs sat tucked in neatly, the hum of the espresso machine quieting for the night. Adriana usually liked this hour — closing time, peaceful, safe. Tonight, it felt different, restless, like the quiet had a pulse. Damian hadn’t left. He sat at the same table, jacket draped over the chair, tie loosened, looking far less like the polished lawyer who’d walked in earlier and more like a man trying to breathe. “You don’t strike me as someone who hides in coffee shops,” Adriana said, wiping the counter, her curiosity finally slipping through. He smiled faintly, eyes following her movements. “I don’t. But today I needed somewhere quiet. Somewhere that didn’t feel like a courtroom, or a boardroom, or… chaos.” “And you found my little corner of peace,” she replied, crossing her arms, leaning lightly against the counter. He nodded once, thoughtful. “Feels safe here. Feels… different.” That word — different — hit her deeper than it should have. She built her life on safe routines, a*****e full of stories, a home two blocks away, no surprises, no risks. Now here was this man, sitting in her quiet space, looking at her like he wasn’t just passing time. “What kind of law do you practice?” she asked. “Corporate. Contracts, mergers, negotiations,” he answered, eyes narrowing slightly like he hated every word. “Sometimes I forget it’s supposed to be about people.” “And now you’re sitting across from a stranger, remembering?” His gaze lifted to hers, steady, serious now. “No,” he said quietly. “I’m sitting across from someone I don’t want to be a stranger.” Her chest tightened. Dangerous words, spoken too easily, the kind that carved pathways where there shouldn’t be any. They didn’t know each other. They shouldn’t matter to each other. And yet… For a long, quiet moment, neither of them moved. The world outside went on, but in here, it felt like something had shifted again — small, invisible, unstoppable. ---
